Edmonds Community College has a mission to promote long term community
development through local and regional partnerships. Education and economic development
are essential linkages on the pathway to progress. The College and the Port of Edmonds share
many common values that contribute to the economic vitality of Edmonds.
The College fully supports the Port's process in bringing together a wide diversity of community
groups and interested citizens to help shape an exciting and vibrant new Harbor Square Master
Plan. The plan is well considered. Mixed use design features anticipate a new transit oriented
neighborhood at the Edmonds waterfront that will include sustainability, open space, public
access and marsh restoration. I think the plan represents an excellent illustration of balance of
interests that offers many community benefits and potential new educational opportunities in
the future. It shows what can result when partnerships occur and leadership builds a vision for
the future.
Edmonds Community College has a long history of working with the Port of Edmonds to
encourage our students to participate in service learning opportunities, such as identifying
native plants in the marshlands by the waterfront. In addition, outdoor activities that showcase
our local talent and Edmonds Community College musicians are excellent examples of the type
of partnerships supported by the Port. We value the expanded opportunities that will result
from the Harbor Square Master Plan. We are enthusiastic about moving forward, and strongly
encourage the Port and the City to approve and adopt the Harbor Square Master Plan as
proposed.
Sincerely,
1
