Jaeger 1830 161h Street Snohomish, WA 98290 Re: City of Edmonds, Washington Grinder Pump System Inquiries Jim, 0. Z91LLEiP Zoeller Family of Water Solutions - In response to the City of Edmonds' request for additional information on our Model 840 grinder system packages, I have prepared the following comments. Ventilation Zoeller's typical grinder package systems do not include a through -the -lid vent. In comparing this feature to certain other competing packages, namely Environment One, the question of the vent's necessity has been raised. For most systems, sufficient ventilation occurs through the building's plumbing vent. This is method is simple, aesthetic, effective, and code approved in most locations. • Simple in that there are fewer components to install and maintain. • Aesthetic in that there are no components sticking up above the grade line to either see or be struck by vehicles or lawn equipment. • Aesthetic in that any odors are vented through the roof stack rather than at ground level. • Effective in that most inlet pipes delivering sewage to the basin maintain an air -gap headspace above the fluid encompassing 75% or more of the pipe's cross -sectional area. Our competitor, Environment One, heavily promotes their use of basin vents. Vents are particularly important for their product due to their use of pressure transducers to activate the control system. These transducers are particularly susceptible to pressure fluctuations in a way that Zoeller's float based control systems are not. Zoeller's packages do not require lid venting to operate properly. Zoeller's extensive history of manufacturing pumps and prepackaged basin systems has given us great confidence in our standard procedures and methods. This experience and confidence extends to the practice of venting through the building plumbing. Net Positive Suction Head An inquiry has arisen regarding the required Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) for Zoeller's model 840 grinder pumps. Presumably, this value has been requested in order to ensure that no cavitation will occur through the pump's operation. Considering that different people have different levels of understanding with regard to cavitation, I would like to take this opportunity to provide a brief overview. JUN 2 4 2014 BUILDING DEPARTMENT CITY OF EDMONDS Without getting overly technical, cavitation is a phase reaction that can happen inside of a pump housing near the impeller if the pressure of the pumped liquid drops below a certain critical value. If the conditions are met, the liquid will flash instantly into little bubbles of water vapor. As the fluid continues through the pump housing, the pressure increases causing these little vapor bubbles to violently collapse back down into liquid. The transition from liquid to vapor and back to liquid typically happens within a fraction of a second, but the cumulative effects of these reactions over time can be devastating. Since cavitation is literally thousands of little explosions and implosions inside the pump, these reactions will actually blast pits into the impeller and pump housing sidewalls, thereby eroding the components and shortening the pump's life considerably. The resulting turbulence also causes vibrations which are detrimental not only to the pump's seals and bearings, but also to the surrounding system components. In short, cavitation is very destructive. Many different factors affect the pressure of the fluid inside the pump housing. The most important factors are water temperature, wet well water depth, suction piping (if present), and pump inlet geometry. Water temperature, depth, and suction piping are all application specific and can be regulated by the project's engineer. However, the geometry of different pump inlets varies from one manufacturer to the next. In order to allow design engineers to run cavitation calculations, many pump manufacturers publish Net Positive Suction Head Required (NPSHR) values. These values establish the minimum pressure that the fluid can be just before entering the pump to ensure that the liquid doesn't drop below vapor pressure inside and begin to cavitate. Design engineers can look at all the other characteristics of the system ahead of the pump and can figure the Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHA). As long as the available NPSH is greater than the required NPSH then the system will not cavitate. With few notable exceptions, cavitation is almost always linked to systems involving suction -side piping, such as what one might find in a dry pit pumping application. Because the pumps that Zoeller manufactures are almost entirely submersible, they do not have suction piping. Since Zoeller model 840 grinder pumps are applied exclusively in wet well applications without suction piping, the potential for these pumps to cavitate is virtually non-existent. As long as 1) the pump is designed and allowed to operate on its published curve, and 2) the wet well is sufficiently vented* so as not to create a vacuum as the fluid level drops, then the liquid pressure in the pump housing will never drop low enough to cavitate. The Zoeller Pump Company does not publish NPSHR values for these pumps due to the fact that cavitation will not occur if these pumps are implemented as intended. If you have any questions about the content of this letter, I would be happy to discuss it further. T7ly, _ Darren E. Byers, P.E. Application Engineer Zoeller Company *As discussed above, venting through the building plumbing is sufficient to prevent vacuum from forming inside the basin.
