Critical Areas Checklist
The Critical Areas Checklist contained on
this form is to be filled out by any person
preparing a Development Permit
Application for the City of Edmonds prior
to his/her submittal of a developmentpeimit
to the City.
The purpose of the Checklist is to enable
City staff to determine whether any potential
Critical Areas are or may be present on the
subject property. The information needed. to
complete the Checklist should be easily
available from observations of the site or
data available at City Hall (Critical Areas
inventories, maps, or soil surveys).
An applicant, or his/her representative, must
fill out the checklist, sign and date it, and
submit it to the City. The City will review
the checklist, make a precursory site visit,
and make a determination of the subsequent
steps necessary to complete a development
permit application.
With a signed copy of this -form, the
applicant should also submit a vicinity map
of the parcel with enough detail that City
staff can find and identify the subject
parcel(s). In addition, the applicant is
encouraged to include any other pertinent
information or studies in conjunction with
this Checklist to assist staff in completing
their preliminary assessment of the site.

GeoSource Engineering, Inc. made a visit to the abovementioned site to conduct a geologic
evaluation of subsurface exploration holes and take soil samples for laboratory testing. The
purpose of our visit was to determine infiltration rates and complete an infiltration trench
design for the existing buildings & impervious areas and the new addition. The locations of
our exploration holes are shown on the attached Site and Exploration Plan — Fig. 1.
Authorization Conditions
Authorization to proceed with this study was granted by Dave Pedersen. This report has
been prepared for the exclusive use of Dave Pedersen and his agents, for specific
application to this property. Within the limitations of scope, schedule and budget, our
services have been performed in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical
engineering and engineering geology practices in effect in this area at the time our report
was prepared. No other warranty, express or implied is made. Our observations, findings,
and opinions are a means to reduce the geotechnical risks inherent to owning or developing
property.
■ SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
Soil Survey Classification Series (SCS Series Description)
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS, formerly SCS) maps classify the
surface soils as the Everett series (EvB) (Recessional Outwash deposits] underlain by
Alderwood soils (AgB) at depths greater than our 4 feet -deep test holes. County and City
storm water management offices use the SCS/NRCS designation for determining design
requirements relating to surface water quality and quantity. The SCS/NRCS descriptions are

agricultural in nature, based mainly on air photo identification of vegetation types growing in
the soils. Because of their general nature, geotechnical field evaluation and/or verification of
site soils is necessary.
Observed Onsite Soils
State law stipulates that "acquiring, evaluation and analysis of geologic data by a Licensed
Professional (Geotechnical) Engineer is a necessary component of a geotechnical study and
is permitted without the Professional Engineer being licensed as a Geologist" (RCW
18.220.190). The licensed Professional Engineer who prepared and signed this report also
holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology (cum Laude) from Washington State
University. In light of this fact, the subsurface conditions at the project site were inferred
from the field explorations accomplished for this study, visual reconnaissance of the site, and
past experience in the area. The observed or anticipated soils consisted of the following
(from top to bottom):
Exploration Hole 1 (South test hole) - The top 1 foot consisted of slightly silty,
gravelly, fine to medium sand. Underlying the sand was clean, gravelly, coarse
sand (more sand than gravel) to over 4 feet in depth. This soil horizon is
consistent with the SCS/NRCS designation Everett (EvB) [ Outwash medium
sand ] and is described as well drained. An infiltration trench or a combination of
trenches installed along the south side of the rear yard area, orientated southeast
to northwest will function adequately for infiltration of runoff from the existing
house and new addition.
Exploration Hole 2 (North test hole) - The top 1.5 feet consisted of silty,
gravelly, fine to medium sand. Underlying the sand was dry, tan, gravelly, coarse
sand (more sand than gravel) to over 4 feet in depth. This soil horizon is also
consistent with the SCS/NRCS designation Everett (EvB) [ Outwash medium
sand ] and is described as well drained. A line of infiltration trenches installed
along the west side of the house will function adequately for infiltration of runoff
from the existing garage; gravel driveway, and small asphalt area at the
beginning of the entrance to the gravel drive.
HIGHEST GROUND WATER LEVEL
We do not anticipate the development of any high ground water table due to the sloping
nature of the underlying Glacial Till in this area. The sloping Till will naturally drain infiltrated
water to the west and northwest. Also, no mottling of the soils was observed.
INFILTRATION TRENCH LENGTH DETERMINATION
One acceptable method for determining infiltration rates on small sites in the City is the
USDA Textural Classification method utilizing the grain -size distribution (ASTM:D421) in
conjunction with the proportional length as determined from Section 3.1.1 Downspout
Infiltration Systems of the 2005 Ecology Storm water Management Manual for Western
Washington. The soils grain size distribution (see attached Grain Size Distribution Analysis)
was used to plot the soil on the attached USDA Soil Textural Classification diagram.

The calculations for determining the required length of the infiltration trench are partially
based on the Rational Method. This method is well -suited to determine storm water volume
from impervious surfaces. The attached Storm Water Runoff And Dispersion Trench
Calculations page indicates the volume -rate of storm water runoff in cubic feet per second
(cfs) for the 100-year, 24-hour design storm. The trench sizing is based on the material size
gradation shown on the attached Grain Size Distribution Analysis (sieve analysis) and the
USDA Soil Textural Classification triangle at the end of this report.
There are two areas that will use independent infiltration trench systems to handle storm
water. The first is for the existing garage, gravel driveway, and small asphalt area at the
beginning of the entrance to the gravel drive, and the second is for the existing house and
new addition.
Infiltration Area 1 -- existing garage, gravel driveway, and entrance asphalt area
Based on the combined impervious area of 3669 Sct. Ft. in proportion to the minimum
lengths for the soils types given in the 2005 Ecology Manual for the 100-year storm volume -
rate, the minimum length required for the infiltration trench in clean medium sand is 110 feet
(see calculations page). This will require three, 37 feet -long trenches separated by 6 feet
running as shown on the attached Site and Exploration Plan — Fig. 1. A cross-section
drawing for construction of the infiltration trenches is also attached. In addition a City -
approved catch basin will be required in a low spot near the garage to collect runoff and
drain the gravel drive and asphalt areas.
Infiltration Area 2 -- existing house and new addition area
Based on the site impervious area of 1981 Sq. Ft. in proportion to the minimum lengths for
the soils types given in the 2005 Ecology Manual for the 100-year storm volume -rate, the
minimum length required for the infiltration trench is 59 feet. This will require two, 30 feet -
long trenches separated by 6 feet running as shown on the attached Site and Exploration
Plan — Fig. 1.
PATIO AREA CONSIDERED PER ECOLOGY DISPERSION CRITERION
The existing patio and stone stairs leading down to it are considered to be impervious areas
and the storm water runoff from these areas needs to be considered in our design. The
2005 DOE design manual states that the flow path for dispersion must be at least 25 feet
long (see DOE 2005 Manual Section 3.1.2 page 3-12; Design Criteria for Dispersion
Trenches). Since runoff from the patio is dispersed across its width and flows across at least
25 feet of near -level lawn grasses before reaching a property line, stream, wetland, or other
impervious surface it meets the DOE design criteria and may be considered as being
suitably dispersed. Thus, runoff from the patio and stairs does not, in our opinion, require
use of an infiltration trench.
INFILTRATION TRENCH CONSTRUCTION
The infiltration trenches should be constructed by placing a woven filter fabric over a
perforated, 4 inch -diameter PVC pipe at 24 inches in depth atop a minimum 24 inch -wide
drain gravel infiltration layer. The gravel layer should be a minimum of 12 inches in thick as
shown on the attached Infiltration Trench Details drawing. The perforations (or drain holes)

in the trench pipe should be orientated as shown on the diagram. Where more than one
infiltration trench is required, multiple trenches must be connected at on end by a PVC elbow
or "T". A tightline 4 inch -diameter PVC pipe from the infiltration trenches connects to the
downspouts and any catch basins used. Inspection by the City of the entire system before
covering is recommended.
