Subject: Geotechnical Monitoring Services
Pin -Pile Installation
1112 Olympic Avenue «oo16 )
Edmonds, Washington
Dear Mr. Bunch:
Introduction
92-1299
As requested, we have provided geotechnical monitoring services during the pin -pile
installation at the subject residence. The purpose of our services was to verify that
the pin -piles were driven to refusal at each location. We proceeded with our services
on the basis of your August 13, 1992 oral authorization.
Pin -Pile Installation
A series of thirteen (13) pin -piles have been installed along portions of the northern
and southern walls, along the full length of the western wall, and at two column
locations within the footprint of the building addition. Along the southern and
western walls the piles were installed singly. Along the north wall the piles were
installed in pairs, as they were at the two column locations. A pile location sketch,
which also shows the pile number, is presented on Sheet 1 of 1, attached.
The piles have been driven to depths of between approximately eleven and one half
(11-1/2) feet and twenty-two (22) feet before achieving refusal. Refusal is considered
to be "less than one inch of penetration after one minute of continuous driving with
a ninety (90) pound jackhammer".

Proof Testing
On Friday August 14, 1992 we visited the site to perform a proof test on each of the
piles. All of the piles had achieved refusal and the maximum movement achieved
while performing the proof driving was nine -tenths of an inch.
On the basis of this proof testing, it is our professional opinion that, with one minor
exception, the tested piles have all achieved refusal as defined above, and should be
expected to be capable of supporting an axial load of at least three thousand (3,000)
pounds.
We have provided a tabulation of the proof test driving data on Table A, attached, for
your information. This table also shows the approximate length of each pile driven,
including approximately three inches of "stick-up" for connection into the concrete
foundation.
Closure
We trust this information is sufficient to resolve any questions you may have
regarding the construction and long term competency of the underpinning pin -pile
system now installed. We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you in
implementing this foundation treatment. Our work has been performed in a manner
consistent with that level of skill, care and competence ordinarily exercised by other
members of the profession in good standing currently practicing under similar
conditions in this area only. No other warranty, express or implied, is made. Should
you have any questions about any point raised in this letter, please feel free to call.
Very truly yours,
