We understand that construction is to consist of a residential dwelling, with associated amenities, such as a swimming pool. The approximate location of the residence and pool is shown on the enclosed location map. ' The scope of services included performance of three (3) backhoe test pits around the site area, and visual observation around the general site. The locations of the test pits are approximately shown on the enclosed location map. Presently, the site area is undeveloped but occurs within an existing residential development. Topographically, the site is relatively gently sloping toward the west within the proposed residence area. The site was apparently near the crest of a ridge at one time, and has since been excavated to the existing condition. Soils Conditions The subsurface soils stratigraphy can best be seen on the enclosed test pit logs. In general, the site was found to be underlain by dense glacial till. The subsurface soils were found to consist of grey -brown to grey, dense to very dense, poorly sorted silty sand with gravel, considered glacial till. These materials were encountered in all test pits performed across the site area, and is also expected to underly the entire site area. These dense basal soils were found to occur about 0.3 to 0.5 feet below grade. The residual surficial soils (0.3 to 0.5 feet thick) were found to consist of topsoil-, sod, roots and scattered artificial fill. Hydrologic Conditions The ground water table was not encountered in any of the test pits performed within the site area. Some evidence of surficial perched water was apparent, above the very dense basal glacial till, as seasonal surface drainage. This condition is common within glacial till areas, where the surface water does not readily penetrate the dense soils, and flows laterally along the surface soil/glacial till interface. DAVID L. In general, residence foundations should be placed into the dense glacial ' soils, adequate drainage should be provided around the structure and pool areas. Any fill should consist of structural fill. Recommendations ' We suggest all foundations be placed at least 12 inches into the dense basal glacial till, where a net allowable soil bearing pressure.of 6000 pounds per ' square foot (psf) is available. Conventional spread or continuous type footings could be used, and should be covered with at least 18 inches of soil ' as to be below frost level. Pool area development is proposed on the south side of the structure. We suggest the pool be founded into the dense basal glacial till, with a bed of ' freely draining aggregate for drainage proposes. Subsequent to pool area excavation, a basal drainage blanket consisting of at least 12 inches of washed aggregate should be placed beneath the pool area. A drain should be installed within this drainage blanket to allow gravity.drainage out of the area. This drain could be connected to the main drainage system, or independently daylight downslope. Structural fill should consist of granular, pit -run type soils, placed in 6 to 8 inch lifts and compacted to 95% of ASTM D-1557, modified proctor. All structural fill should be adequately retained using appropriately designed retaining walls, or backsloped to slopes no steeper than 2H:1V, and adequately protected from erosion. DAVID L. Consulting Engineering Geology June 28, 1988 Project No. 7088 Page 4 Should retaining walls be anticipated, we suggest they consist of adequately designed concrete walls, founded into the dense basal glacial till. Lateral pressures against the wall of 35 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) for cantilever walls, and 50 pcf for restrained walls should be used for design..purposes where the ground behind the wall is well drained and there are no surcharges. A drainage system, consisting of at least 18 inches.of freely draining aggregate placed full height of the wall and connected to a basal perforated pipe drain, should be utilized for all retaining walls. The surface of the drainage area behind the wall should be capped with on -site native soils, and backsloped away from the wall area. Resistance to sliding for retaining walls ' should utilize a base coefficient of friction of 0.4 within the glacial till. Adequate drainage should be provided around the site area. We suggest the use of foundation and roof drain systems, independently directed into the main drainage system, or properly daylighted downslope. The pool area and ' retaining wall area drains could be connected to the main drainage system, which is directed downslope away from the structure.area. Protection of the ' drainage outfall area, or connection to downslope drainage systems should be anticipated to reduce any potential for erosion of the slope area. Site grading should also be performed, so that accumulated surface waters are directed into the main drainage system. Additional Notes ' Inspection of the earthwork phase of development should be performed. This should include foundation excavation and placement, structural filling and i drainage development. Although we do expect site soil types, conditions and distributions to reflect ' our findings, some variations could occur. Lateral pressures against the wall of 35 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) for cantilever walls, and 50 pcf for restrained walls should be used for design..purposes where the ground behind the wall is well drained and there are no surcharges. A drainage system, consisting of at least 18 inches.,of freely draining I�aggregate placed full height of the wall and connected to a basal perforated pipe drain, should be utilized for all retaining walls. The surface of the drainage area behind the wall should be capped with on -site native soils, and backsloped away from the wall area. Resistance.to sliding for retaining walls should utilize a base coefficient of friction of 0.4 within the glacial till. Adequate drainage should be.provided around the.site area. We suggest the use of foundation and roof drain systems, independently directed into the main drainage system, or properly daylighted downslope. The pool area and retaining wall area drains could be connected to the main drainage system, which is directed downslope away from the structure area. Protection of the drainage outfall area, or connection to downslope drainage systems should be anticipated to reduce any potential for erosion of the slope area. Site grading should also be performed, so that accumulated surface waters are directed into the main drainage system. Additional Notes Inspection of the earthwork phase of development should be performed This should include foundation excavation and placement, structural filling and drainage development. Although we do expect site soil types, conditions and distributions to reflect our findings, some variations could occur. Take precautions necessary to protect adjoining structure and property from excessive drainage or debris. The contractor shall provide an adequate system for the handling and removal of surface water. STRUCTURAL: STRUCTURAL DESIGN CODE: Design is in accordance with the 1988 edition of the Uniform Building Code. (1988 UBC) DESIGN LIVE LOADS Equivalent Fluid Pressure X psf lateral active pressure. Lateral Fluid Pressure is carried by bending of vertical reinforced masonry (R/M) wall to cantilever wall footing at the base of the wall, which is cast integrally with a slab on grade driveway. FOUNDATION: Footings shall bear on firm undisturbed earth of 2000 psf minimum bearing capacity at a minimum depth below adjacent grade of l'-6". Compacted fill shall be clean, free -draining, granular material compacted.in shallow lifts of 8 inches maximum height. Backfill behind all foundation walls with clean, well - draining, granular fill material —and provide for subsurface drainage using perforated drainage pipe wrapped in filter cloth and placed in shallow trenches with crushed rock or pea -gravel to promote drainage in a manner satisfactory for the' local building department. Weep Holes at no further than 4 feet on center may also be used at the base of the concrete block wall to carry water from free draining backfill wrapped in filter cloth. Concrete footings to be poured monolithically unless shown otherwise or approved prior to placement. CONCRETE: ti , fc'= 2500 psi - minimum compression strength at 28 days. (75% of .45 (fc') Ec = 2,850,000 psi - Concrete Modulus of Elasticity n = 10.178 - modular ratio = Ec/Es The selection of materials for the mixing and placing of all concrete shall conform to the requirements of the Uniform Building Code, 1988 Edition. Materials shall be proportioned to produce a dense, workable mix having a maximum slump of 4 inches, which can be placed without segregation or excess free- surface water. All concrete shall be mixed to have a minimum compressive strength at 28 days of 2500 psi in compression, with a minimum of 5-1/2 sacks of Type I Portland Cement per cubic yard of concrete. All concrete shall contain MBVR Air Entraining Agent to produce 4 to 6 percent entrained air in the concrete. Maximum size of aggregate is 1 inch for foundation concrete, and slabs on grade. Absolute water -cement ratio by weight shall not exceed 0.40. For exposed concrete in slabs on grade, and foundation walls, the total volume of free available water per cubic' yard of concrete shall not exceed 270 pounds. Provide plain and reinforced concrete footings, foundations, slabs -on -grade and all other concrete incidental to a complete job. MATERIALS: All concrete work to use Portland Cement, Type I, conforming to ASTM C-150 CONCRETE UNIT MASONRY: Design stresses have been adjusted to permit noncontinuous inspection per UBC 306(a). fm'= 1500 psi x 50% = 750 psi design ultimate compression strength at 28 days for concrete unit masonry. Fm = 250 psi - allowable compression stress in bending Noncontinuous Construction. GROUT: Fine or Coarse Grout proportions are described in Table 24-B of the 88 UBC and shall flow without segregation of the constituents and have a minimum compressive strength of at least 2000 psi at 28 days. REINFORCING STEEL: , All reinforcing steel shall be deformed steel bars manufactured in accordance with ASTM specification A615, of Grade 60 steel.
