RE: ROCKERY EVALUATION
1439 8TH PLACE S.
EDMONDS, WASHINGTON
Dear Mr. Linn:
August 14, 2001

ENGINEERING
This letter presents the results of our review of the condition of a rockery at 1439 8`h Place S. in
Edmonds, Washington. At your request, we visited the site and observed the condition of the rockery,.
reviewed the results of our reconnaissance and evaluation of a number of rockery walls conducted for the
City several years ago, and provided our opinions to you verbally and in this summary letter relative to
the apparent stability of the rockery. Our services were provided under Task Order No. 3 of the On -Call
Geotechnical Engineering Services Agreement dated March 28, 2001.
We understand that the property owner reported that two rocks dislodged from the rockery wall
during the February 28, 2001 Nisqually earthquake, and the property owner was concerned about the
stability of the rockery. Mike Linn of the City of Edmonds and the undersigned visited the site on July
10, 2001 and met with the property owner.
The rockery is located along the length of the east property line of 1439 8`h Place S. The rockery
is about 7 to 8 ft high. The west sidewalk of 9`' Avenue S. is located above the rockery. The rockery
extends to the north and south of the subject property and appears to have been constructed at about the
same time as numerous other rockeries present along both the west and east sides of 9`h Avenue S. (and
100a' Avenue W. farther to the south) in the vicinity of this property.
Two rocks, with maximum dimension of less than 8 inches, were observed on the ground in front.
of the base of the wall. The property owner reported that these rocks dislodged and fell from the rockery
at the time of the earthquake. The property owner indicated that there have been no other observed
problems with the rockery. It appears that the rocks present near the base of the rockery could have
broken or split off the face of one of the larger rocks, or could have been located at the top of the rockery

and dislodged during the earthquake ground shaking. Visual examination of the rockery did not show
indications of bulging, cracked rocks, or displacement of rocks along the face of the rockery.
Based on our observations, it is our opinion that the rocks observed near the base of the rockery
could have fallen or broken off from the face of the rockery during the earthquake. This could have been
the result of a preexisting crack in a larger rock (if the fallen rock split off of a larger rock) or the position
of the rock if it dislodged from the top of the rockery. However, no other specific indications of rock
failure or rockery instability were observed at the time of our site visit. Therefore, we do not see the need
for action to repair the rockery.
Landau Associates previously reviewed the stability of a number of rockery walls within the City
of Edmonds, including rockeries along 9`h Avenue S. and 100'' Avenue W. The results of our review and
evaluation of these rockery walls is summarized in our report to the City of Edmonds dated October 12,
1994. Rockery stability is dependent in part on the workmanship of the rockery contractor and rock
placement and configuration. A number of the rockeries that we previously reviewed for the City are
characterized by an awkward placement or configuration of rocks that is not consistent with good
workmanship. In this regard, the rockery behind the property at 1439 8`h Place S. is similar to most of the
rockeries in the area that we have previously reviewed. Although some of the rocks are in an awkward
configuration, we did not observe specific problems that would indicate that this segment of the rockery is
in worse condition than other rockeries in the area.
We appreciate this opportunity to be of service to the City of Edmonds. Please contact us if you
have any questions regarding this letter or if we may be of further assistance.
