The subject site consists of a residential parcel with an existing single-family home. A steep slope is located at the
northwest end of the parcel. The toe of this slope extends down to the BNSF railroad tracks adjacent to the Puget Sound
shoreline. It is our understanding that current plans include the construction of a deck off of the rear (NW side) of the
home. It. is also our understanding that the distal end of the deck will be supported on two posts located approximately 15
feet northwest of the home (i.e. approximately 58 feet from the top of the steep slope). The purpose of our visit was to
evaluate the suitability of the proposed deck setback from the top of the steep slope.
Site Reconnaissance
The topography of the area surrounding the home and proposed deck slopes gently down toward the northwest. The
existing home is setback approximately 73 feet from the top of the steep slope at the NW end of the property. The
inclination of the upper 2 to 4 feet of the steep slope was visually estimated to be approximately 50 percent. Below this
point, the slope steepens to approximately 0.75H: IV (Horizontal:Vertical). The inclination of the slope flattens to
approximately 2H: IV over its lower five feet. Review of the site on Google Earth indicates that the total height of the
steep slope is approximately 45 feet with an average inclination of approximately 1.211: IV. This is generally consistent
with our visual estimation of the slope height and inclination. The face of the slope is vegetated by low brush. A cross
section of the slope based on our field measurements and estimated slope height and inclination is shown on Page 3.
Subsurface Conditions
Hand boring HB-1 was excavated approximately 15 feet from the NW side of the home approximately midway between
the locations of the footings for the two proposed deck support posts. The boring was excavated by a laborer supplied by
Seacoast Construction prior to our arrival. A hand auger was used to collect soil samples from the base and sidewalls of
the boring at the time of our site visit. The following is a summary of the soil conditions encountered in boring HB-I.

Review of the regional geologic map titled Composite Geologic Map of the Sno-King Area, Central Puget
Lowland, Washington prepared by Booth, Cox, Troost and Shimel for the Seattle -Area Geologic Mapping
Program, University of Washington (2004) indicates that the area of the subject site is underlain by Vashon
Lodgement Till. Our interpretation of the sediments encountered in exploration HB-1 is in general agreement
with the regional geologic map.
Conclusions
Based on the subsurface and topographic conditions present at the site, it is our opinion that the proposed
setback of approximately 58 feet from the top of the steep slope is suitable for mitigation of landslide hazard
risks associated with the proposed deck. Our work has been conducted for the exclusive use of Seacoast
Construction, and their agents, in accordance with in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical
engineering practice. No other warranty, express or implied, is made.

ATTENTION HOME OWNER:
Your septic tank has limitations! It was designed and installed to care for an average -size family. Over-
loading the septic tank or disturbance of the drain field may seriously impair satisfactory operation. Points to
remember:
1. Have your tank checked periodically to see if pumping is necessary (2y2-3 years).
2. Do not channel ground water, surface water, footing drains or downspouts into the tank or drainfield.
3. Do not excavate, fill, place a structure, driveway or patio in, on, or over the drainfield.
4. Limit toilet fixture disposal to sanitary wastes and toilet tissue.
5. Detergents and bleaches used in normal household quantities will not harm the action of the septic tank
and disposal field.
