The initial short plat site development included a detention tank system for a shared driveway and an allocation of impervious surface for the house construction on Lot 3. The current owner the Murata SP lots is requesting a reallocation (memo attached) of the lot impervious surface (controlled by the plat detention tank) to accommodate a new house on Lot 2. The revised allocation (controlled by plat detention tank) and the proposed new impervious (controlled by an onsite Lot 3 infiltration system) is summarized below: Lot 3 Impervious Surface (see attached exhibit): 2,150 sf (Lot 3 house) + 2,774 s (Shared driveway for lots 2 and 3 located on Lot 3's panhandle) 4,924 sf (Impervious to Short Plat detention tank) 2,500 sf (Lot 3 Infiltration System Area) An infiltration drywell is proposed on Lot 3 to control the additional 2,500 sf of impervious area. A site specific 0.5 in/hr design infiltration rate was determined by the geotechnical engineer (see attached letter). The stormwater infiltration drywell has been sized using the City of Edmonds Simplified Sizing Tables (handout #E72-B). The below tables provide the sizing information for the infiltration drywell systems. This memo is provided to clarify the amount of impervious surface area available on each individual lot, for benefit of the building designer. The approved drainage report accounted for a total of 0.31 acres of new impervious surface on. the project. That investigation is based on two test holes hand -dug on the project site. Our findings of the site conditions and preliminary geotechnical recommendations were presented in a report titled "Preliminary Geotechnical Investigation, 3-Lot Plat, 18310 Sunset Way, Edmonds, Washington," dated December 16, 2013, (hereinafter referred to as 12/16/2013 Report). Onsite storm disposal by infiltration is considered for the subject residence of this report. At your request, we have conducted an in -situ infiltration test on the west side of Lot 3 to determine the infiltration rate in the stormwater disposal area. Subsurface conditions of Lot 3 had been explored in our previous investigation with one hand -dug test hole, TH-1, the log of which is presented in the 12/16/2013 Report. This test hole, dug to 5.0 feet deep, encountered 14 inches of topsoil, 1.8 feet of brown to light -brown, medium -dense, silty fine sand with trace gravel, then into a deposit of brown -gray, dense, silty fine sand with trace to some gravel which appears to of advance outwash deposit. For the infiltration test, subsurface conditions of the stormwater disposal area of Lot 3 were explored with a backhoe test pit (Test Pit 1) excavated to 10.0 deep. The location and the log of this test pit are presented on Plate 2 and 4 attached hereto. This test pit encountered 2.5 feet of loose fill, 4.5 feet of light -brown to light -gray, very -dense, silty fine sand with trace to some gravel and occasional cobble (appears to be glacial till), 1.5 feet of light -brown, dense, gravelly, silty, fine to medium sand, then into a light -brown to light -gray, very -stiff, clayey silt soil to the depthexplored. Groundwater was encountered by the test pit. It is the layer of light -brown, gravelly, silty, fine to medium sand layer at depth from 7.0 to 8.5 feet that was targeted for the in -situ infiltration test. Test Pit and Subsurface Condition The in -situ infiltration test was completed on July 21, 2015. The location of the infiltration test, IT-1, is shown on Plate 2. The test pit was excavated into a light -brown, gravelly, silty, fine to medium sand. Groundwater was not encountered by the infiltration test pit. Clear tap water was used in the test. The infiltration test was then conducted in the pit by falling head method with the initial water level at about 18 inches deep. A steel cross bar is affixed on top of the pit and water levels from the bar were measured in the beginning and at the end of a one -hour period. The initial infiltration rate, K,at inifial, in inches per hour (iph), was thus determined. The result of the infiltration test is presented in the table below: LIU & ASSOCIATES, INC. (CF,), and degree of influent control to prevent siltation and bio-buildup (CF .. ), are to be applied on Ksat initial values to get the design infiltration rate, Ksg. According Table 3.3.1 of the DOE Manual, CFv = 0.33 to 1.0, CF, = 0.5 for small scale test, and CF. = 0.9. Use- A'middle value 0.65 for CF, thus, CFT = (0.65) (0.5) (0.9) = 0.29. The Ksat value for the infiltration test was thus calculated and shown in the table above. RECOMMENDATIONS An infiltration trench is to be installed in the stormwater disposal area on the west side of Lot 3 to dispose stormwater. The bottom of the infiltration trench should be excavated at least 6 inches into the target soil layer of light -brown, gravelly, silty, fine to medium sand. Based on the above test result, we recommend a design infiltration rate of 0.5 iph be used for calculating the amount of stormwater that can seep into bottom of the trench. LIU & ASSOCIATES.) INC. Our recommendation of the design soil infiltration rate is based on the geologic and soil conditions encountered by the test pit excavated in the stormwater disposal area of Lot 3, the infiltration test result, and our experience and engineering judgment. The conclusion and recommendation are professional opinions derived in a manner consistent with the level of care and skill ordinarily exercised by other members of the profession currently practicing under similar conditions in this area. No warranty, expressed or implied, is made. The actual subsurface conditions of the stormwater disposal area may vary from those encountered by the test pit excavated in the area. The nature and extent of such variations may not become evident until construction starts. If variations appear then, we should be retained to re-evaluate the recommendations of this report, and to verify or modify them in writing prior to proceeding further with the construction of the infiltration trench.
