Slope Stability Inspection
Our Project Number 90095
Dear Tom,
As requested, personnel from Hong West & Associates (HWA) visited the project site at the above
referenced address on August 15, 1990. The purpose of our visit was to evaluate the stability of the
slope located on the east side of the project site.
The existing slope is approximately 30 feet high, and at a roughly 2:1 to 1.5:1 (vertical:horizontal)
angle. At the time of HWA's visit, the slope surface was clear of vegetation due to stripping. 'I'here is
a house on top of the slope with a setback distance of approximately 30 feet.
The in situ soil is glacially consolidated sand with some gravel and fine cobbles, which is a very dense
soil unit in the core of the slope. HWA's personnel also surveyed other slopes near the project site.
HWA believes that these slopes are of a similar geological formation as the. project site. Ile observed
slopes have been stable for years and yet steeper than the subject slope. An example is a near vertical
slope behind a grocery market adjacent to the 76th Avenue West and Olympic View Drive intersection.
As a result, HWA believes that the core of the existing slope is stable. No retaining structure is re-
quired for the subject slope. However, some measures should be taken to minimize the potential of sur-
face erosion.
For the slope protection we recommend the following:
a) Vegetate the entire slope surface sometime in the near future. Until vegetation takes root on the sub-
ject slope, there exist a potential for surface erosion.
b) Do not place fill on top of the subject slope. If the property owners at the top of the hill add an un-
controlled fill in the future, the fill may adversely affect the subject slope. Fill may slough down to the
project site.
We believe that this letter should serve your immediate needs. If you have any questions, please con-
tact this office at your convenience.
Sincerely,
