I SIDE SEWER PERMIT REQUIREMENTS
1. Side sewer permits'shali,be poste�d'at'job-si-te and �vailable to
inspector at time of inspection. Inspection duHhg'normal working
hours only. One (1) working day notice required. Side sewers
must be left uncovered until inspected. A water test is required.
2. Property owners can obtain a permit to install side sewers on
private property. Licensed side sewer contractors must be
employed to construct side sewers in the City right-of-way.
Invasion into City right-of-way requires a separate permit.
3. The side sewer contractor assumes full responsibility for each
installation for one (1) year.
4. Trenches, within -City r.ight-of-way must be restore.d to original
..condj-t-ions. -Street restoration fee.s shall be paid in advance
under a right-of-way permit. Contractors shall be responsible for
ri g'ht-of -way, f ai 1 ure due to poor cbmp6tti 6n of f i 11
5. No down spouts, footing drains or floor drains can be connected to
a side sewer system.
6. Pea gravel is required for bedding when installing sewer lines
through other than granular soil.
7. Cleanouts at property line and at house will have risers installed
to within 12" of surface grade with removable cap.
8. Commercial establishments require a minimum of six inch (6") side
sewer line.
Side sewers may not be installed closer than thirty i-nches (30")*
to any structure.
10. Cleanouts are required at 30"-60" from each plumbing exit line and
at minimum intervals of 100' along sewer line run.
11. Side sewer lines must be laid 0 at a minimum grade of 2% (1.15 0)
and maximum grade of 100% (45 ).
12. No turn in side sewer gre -- 1 50 (1/8 bend) is allowed
be Veen cleanout. All 90u -turns must be constructed of a
45 (1/8 bend) and wye with removable cap for cleanouts.
13. No cleanout shall be paved over. If located in pavement, cast
iron lids will be installed.
14. All connections will be of gasketed type. No solvent joints
unless prior approval is granted.

For this proposed project consisting of the construction of a single family
residence storm drainage will be controlled using the infiltration trench ("dry
well")system. This alternative type of storm drainage disposal requires on -site
perc tests. These required tests were performed in five different locations on
the site including the locations of the infiltration trench sites. Perc test results
are shown in Figure A, attached to this report.
The holes established for the five individual perc tests indicated similar soils in
these locations and apparently over a majority of the site(re * fer to the perc test
map attached to this report). In accordance with the SCS Soils Maps for
Snohomish County the soils encountered are the Alderwood - Urban Land
Complex, 8 - 15 % slopes. They are a gravelly sandy loam with a dark brown
color in the top 6 inches of the hole underlain by a gravelly sandy loam of
yellowish brown color. In all holes the soils were nearly identical in texture and
color variations, and consistant to a depth of 36 inches. See attached SCS
soils survey data.
A ge6technical investigation was done by,James Eaton, P.E. of Geotechnical
Services, Box 126, Hobart, Wa. 98025. A copy of this report is included
herewith. The report basically concludes that disposal of storm drainage
through means of infiltration is reasonable for the subject site and will not have
adverse affects on the slope or on neighboring property.

Sizing trench lengths
The square footage of roof and driveway contributing runoff is the sum of:
1025 + 1237 + 300 + 392 + 630 + 700 + 1382 = 5666 square feet, refer to
the enclosed site plan. The required trench length in accordance with Table 1 -
Infiltration Trench Length - City of Edmonds and the average perc rate of this
location of 3.7 min/inch is 24ft of trench per 1000 sq. ft. of impermeable surface,
5666 sq. ft. x 24 ft trench/1000 sq. ft. imperv. surfaces = 135.9 ft. of trench
with a bottom width of 2.
If a trench with a bottom width of 4' is used it would shorten the required length
of trench to:
135.9' x 2' + (1' + 1' for each side) = 135.9' x 4' = 90.6' of trench, 4' bottom

To assure the required detention volume is available in the trench, the trench
will be filled with a material with void ratio of 0.30, a commonly used value.
The required detention volume 205 cu. ft. must be available in the voids within
the gravel in the trench. The 90.6 trench if 2 feet deep and 2 feet wide will
contain:
90.6 x 2 x 2 x 0.3 = 108.7 cu. ft. of detention volume < 230.3 cu. ft.
A trench 4 feet wide, if lengthened to 96', would contain:
96 x 2 x 4 x 0.3 = 230.4 cu. ft. of detention volume > 230.3 cu. ft.
Trenches 4 feet wide and 96 feet in total length will be used for infiltration,
and storage. 12 feet of the total 96 feet will be designed as runoff spreader
outlet trench. Refer to the attached map.
All trenches will use 3/4" x 1 1/2" washed gravel, will be 2 feet in depth and 4
feet in width. Total gravel required will be 768 cu. ft. Filter fabric will be used
to enclose the washed gravel placed in the above trenches. The perforated
pipe will be 4" in diameter.

supplemental irTigation is also needed. Fertilizer is
needed for optimum growth of grasses and legumes.
The main limitations for homesites and septic tank
absorption fields are the depth to the weakly cemented
hardpan and wetness because of the seasonal high
water table. Effluent from absorption fields flows laterally
above the hardpan and may seep at the bottom of
slopes. Drainage is needed if buildings with basements
and crawl spaces are constructed. During construction,
disturbed areas need to be seeded and runoff controlled
to protect the soil from erosion. Temporary sediment
basins can be used in construction areas to reduce the
amount of sediment in runoff water.
This map unit is in capability subclass lVe.
3—Alderwood gravelly sandy loam, 15 to 25
percent slopes. This moderately well drained soil is on
till plains. It is moderately deep over a hardpan. The soil
formed in glacial till. Areas -are long and narrow, are
oriented in a northwest to southeast direction, and are
20 to 100 acres in size. The native vegetation is mainly
conifers and hardwoods. Elevation is 50 to 550 feet. The
average annual precipitation is about 40 inches, the
averiage annual air temperature is about 50 degrees F,
and the average frost -free season is 170 to 190 days.
Typically, the surface layer is very dark grayish brown
gravelly sandy loam about 7 inches thick. The upper part
of the subsoil is dark yellowish brown and dark brown
very gravelly sandy loam about 23 inches thick. The
lower part is olive brown very gravelly sandy loam about
5 inches thick. A weakly cemented hardpan is at a depth
of about 35 inches. Depth to the hardpan ranges from
20 to 40 inches.
Included in 1his unit are small areas of soils that are
similar to this Alderwood soil'but have cobbles or stones
on the surface. Also included are small areas of Everett,
Indianola, and Ragnar soils on terraces and eskers.
Included areas make up about 15 percent of the total
acreage.
Permeability of this Alderwood soil is moderately rapid
above the hardpan and very slow through it. Available
water capacity is low. Effective roofing depth is 20 to 40
inches. Runoff is medium, and the hazard of water
erosion is moderate. A seasonal perched water table is
at a depth of 18 to 36 inches from January to March.

Douglas -fir is the main woodland species on this unit
On the basis of a 100-year site curve, the mean site
index is 142. On the basis of a 50-year site curve, the
mean'site index is 108. The mean annual increment at
culmination (CMAI) for Douglas -fir at age 65 is 148 cubic
feet per acre. Among the trees of limited extent are
western redcedar, western hemlock, and red alder.
Among the common forest understory plants are salal,
evergreen huckleberry, Oregon -grape, brackenfern, and
western swordfem.
This unit is well suited to year-round logging. Logging
roads require suitable surfacing for year-round use. Rock
for road construction is not readily available on this unit.
Reforestation can be accomplished by planting
Douglas -fir seedlings. If seed trees are present, natural
reforestation of cutover areas by red alder occurs
penodically. When openings are made in the canopy,
Invading brushy plants, H not controlled, can prevent the
establishment of seedlings. Because the rooting depth is
restricted by a cemented pan, trees are subject to
windthrow.
The main limitations for homesites and septic tank
absorption fields are the steepness of slope, depth to

on this unit. Establishing plant cover on steep road cut

loam about 9 inches thick. The subsoil to a depth of 60
inches or more is mottled, gray and olive silty clay.
Included in this unit are small areas of Terric
Medisaprists, very poorly drained organic soils, Norma
soils along upland drainageways, Kitsap and Pastik soils
on terraces, and Bellingham soils that have been
drained. Included areas make up about 10 percent of the
total acreage. .
Permeability of this Bellingham soil is slow. Available
water capacity is high. Effective rooting depth is limited
by a seasonal high water table that is at a depth of 0 to
about 12 inches from November to June. Runoff is very
slow, and the hazard of water erosion is slight. Ponding
occurs from November to June.
This unit is used for pasture, woodland, urban
development, and wildlife habitat.
This unit is suited to pasture if the excess water on the
surface is removed. Tile drains or open ditches can be
used if suitable outlets are available. Grazing when the
soil in this unit is wet results in compaction of the
surface layer, poor tilth, and reduced infiltration. Use of
proper stocking rates, pasture rotation, and restricted
grazing during wet periods helps to keep the pasture in
good condition. Proper grazing practices, weed control,
and fertilizer are needed for maximum quality of forage.
This unit is suited to red alder. On the basis of a 50-
year site curve, the mean site index is 83. The mean
annual Increment at culmination (CMAI) for red alder at
age 40 is 89 cubic feet per acre. Among the trees of
