At the time the work was being done, it appeared to me, and, I believe, most of my neighbors, that the "sidewalk" was just one step above being completely unacceptable. There was no curb but, rather, a kind of a sloped rise from the level of the street. The entire "sidewalk" slopes as well making it slightly difficult for walking. With no curb, it is easy (and usual, by the way) for rowdies to drive their cars up into yards and spin their wheels leaving unsightly ditches for homeowners to repair. Additionally, those of us who walk regularly feel that there is no protection from passing vehicular traffic because of the lack of a curb. Recently, as I'm sure you are very aware, the entire length of 200th was re -paved all the way from Maplewood Drive to 76th and an apparently level sidewalk was created that has an appropriate curb. At first I couldn't understand why the sidewalk on 200th rated a curb and a level surface when our little street didn't. I finally convinced myself that it was because 200th is a major thoroughfare. Wrong! I just noticed, yesterday, that 80th Avenue West, from 196th to 200th, has just had a sidewalk added and, you guessed it, they have been provided with a curb. I must, then, ask why those of us who live on 88th Avenue West were treated so shabbily I would very much appreciate your looking into the matter and providing a response. Dear Mr. Pierre, I write in response to your letter to Mayor Laura Hall dated November 11, 1992. In your letter, you questioned why the sidewalk on 88th Ave. W. was constructed different'ly than the sidewalk on 200th St. S.W. and 80th Ave. W. The reason for this is that the residents along 88th Ave. W. did not want a sidewalk with a concrete vertical curb. The residents felt a curb would make the street look too much*like an arterial street. The design of the sidewalk was approved by the neighborhood. There were several discussions before the City Council, and a neighborhood meeting was held at the home of Laura Connolly regarding the location and the design.
