Where pipe traps occur in such standpipe systems including fire department connections, they shall be provided with drain. 3. Size. The size of the standpipe shall be not less than 4 inches in buildings in which the highest outlet is 75 feet or less above the fire department connection and shall be not less than 6 inches where the highest outlet is higher than 74 feet above the fire department connec- tion. 4. Fire department connections. All 4-inch dry standpipes shall be equipped with a two-way fire department connection. All 6-inch dry standpipes shall be equipped with a four-way fire department connec- tion. The fire department connection shall be located on a street front, not less than 18 inches nor more than 4 feet above grade and shall be equipped with an approved straightway check valve and substantial-, plug or cap. The fire department connection shall be protected against mechanical injury and shall be visible and accessible. Unless otherwise approved no more than one fire department connection shall be made. 5. Outlets. Each standpipe shall be equipped with an approved ove the floor 21/2 -inch outlet not less than 2 feet nor more than 4 feet ab level of each story. All dry standpipes shall be equipped with a two- way, 21/2-inch outlet above the roof line of the building when the roof has a pitch of less than 4 inches in 12 inches. All outlets shall be installed so that a 12-inch long wrench may be used in connecting the hose with clearance for the wrench on all sides of the outlet. Stand- pipes located in smokeproof enclosures shall have outlets located in the vestibule or on the balcony. Standpipe outlets in stairway enclosure or smoke towers shall be so located that the exit doors do not interfere with the use of the outlet. All outlets shall be equipped with an ap- proved valve, cap and chains. roved, durable sign with raised letters of at least 1 6. Signs. An app inch in height shall be permanently attached adjacent to all fire depart- ment street connections. Such sign shall read, "DRY STANDPIPE." Wet Standpipes See. 3804. (a) General. Wet standpipes shall comply with the re- quirements of this Section. (b) Where Required. Wet standpipes extending from the cellar or basement into the topmost story shall be provided in Groups A and B, Divisions 1 and 2, Occupancies with an occupant load exceeding 1000; in Groups C, D, E, F, G, and H Occupancies four or more stories in height; and in Groups E and F Occupancies having a floor area exceed ing 20,000 square feet per floor. EXCEPT10�4: 1. Wet standpipes are not required in buildings equipped throughout with an automatic fire -extinguishing system. 514 2. Wet standpipes are not required in basements or cellars equipped with a complete automatic fire -extinguishing system. 3. Wet standpipes shall not be required in assembly areas used solely for worship. (c) Location. Wet standpipes shall be located so that all portions of the building are within 20 feet of a nozzle attached to 75 feet of hose. In Group A, Group B, Division 1 and Group B, Division 2 Occupari- cies, when the occupant load is more than 1000, outlets shall be located on each side of any stage, on each side of the rear of the auditorium and on each side of the balcony. (d) Detailed Requirements. 1. Construction. Wet standpipes together with fittings and connections shall be of noncombustible materials with a melting point in excess of I 000*F. and shall be tested at a hydrostatic pressure 50 percent in excess of the working pressure required but not less than 150 pounds per square inch. 2. Size. The size of the standpipe shall be not less than 2V2 inches in diameter when the height of the riser is 50 feet or more above the source and shall be not less than 2 inches in diameter when the height of the riser is less than 50 feet above the source. 3. Outlets. All interior wet standpipes shall be equipped with a IY2-inch valve in each story, including the basement or cellar of the building and located not less than 3 feet nor more than 6 feet above the floor. 4. Water supply. The wet standpipe system shall deliver not less than 35 gallons of water per minute at not less than 25 pounds per square inch residual pressure from each of any two outlets flowing simultaneously for 30 minutes. When more than one interior wet stand- pipe is required in the building, such standpipes may be connected at their bases or highest points by pipes of equal size. Where combination standpipes are installed, the I V2-inch outlet system may be supplied from the combination system with a 2-inch connecting line. 5. Pressure and gravity tanks. Pressure or gravity tanks shall have a capacity sufficient to furnish at least 70 gallons of water per minute for 30 minutes. Other such tanks shall be located so as to provide not less than 25 pounds per square inch residual pressure from each of two outlets flowing simultaneously for 30 minutes. Discharge pipes from pressure tanks shall extend 2 inches from and into the bottom of such tanks. All tanks shall be equipped with a manhole, ladder and platform, drainpipe, water and pressure gauges, and a pressure relief valve. Each pressure tank shall be tested in place after installation and proved tight at a hydrostatic pressure 50 percent in excess of the working pressure required, but not less than 150 pounds per square inch. Where such tanks are used also for domestic purposes, the supply take -off for such purposes shall be located above the required capacity of such tanks. Supply tanks shall be supported on noncombustible construction with not less than 3-foot clearances over the top and under the bottom to adjacent construction. Approved pressure gauges shall be provided at pressure tanks and at the air pump. 515 6. Fire pumps. Fire pumps shall be approved and shall deliver not less than the required fire flow and pressure. Such pumps shall be supplied with adequate power source and shall be automatic in opera- tion. Where the wet standpipe system is supplied with water from the domestic supply of the building, approved fire pumps shall not be required provided the domestic pump used delivers the required fire flow. 7. Hose and hose reels. Each wet standpipe outlet shall be supplied with a hose not less than I Y2 inches in diameter. Such hose shall be equipped with an approved variable fog nozzle. An approved hose reel rack or cabinet shall be provided and shall be located so as to make the hose accessible. The hose reel rack or cabinet shall be recessed in the wall or protected by suitable cabinets. 8. Connection to fire -extinguishing systems. Wet standpipe sys- tems may be supplied from a fire -extinguishing system complying with U.B.C. Standard No. 38-1 and shall be connected as required in Section 3801. 9. Pressure reduction. Where the static pressure at any standpipe outlet exceeds 100 pounds per square inch, an approve pressure reduction device shall be permanently installed at the outlet to reduce the water flow so that the nozzle pressure does not exceed 80 pounds per square inch in accordance with Table No. 38-A. Combination Standpipes See. 3805. (a) General. All combination standpipes shall comply with the requirements of this Section. Design and installation shall be in accordance with U.B.C. Standard No. 38-3. Where a combination standpipe system is installed in accordance with this Section, a sepa- rate dry standpipe system need not be installed. (b) Where Required. One combination standpipe shall be required for every stairway or smokeproof enclosute that extends from the ground floor to the roof in buildings exceeding 150 feet in height. (c) Location. Combination standpipe systems shall have connec- tions for dry standpipes located as required in Section 3803 (c) and shall have wet standpipe outlets as required in Section 3804 (c). Portions of combination standpipe systems, including extensions for wet standpipe outlets, not within an enclosed stairway or smokeproof enclosure shall be protected by a degree of fire resistance equal to that required for vertical enclosures in the building in which they are locat- ed. In buildings where more than one combination standpipe system is provided, they shall be cross connected at the bottom. (b) Detailed Requirements. 1. Construction. Combination stand- pipe systems shall be installed and tested as required for dry standpipe systems in accordance with Section 3803 (d) 1. Size. Combination ftandpipe systems shall be not less than 6 inches in diameter. 3. Riser shutoff valve and drain. Each individual riser must be equipped with an OS and Y valve at its base and an approved valve for draining. 4. Fire department connections. All combination standpipe sys- tems shall be equipped with a four-way fire department connection. Combination standpipe systems with three or more standpipes shall be provided with not less than two four-way fire department inlet connec- tions. All fire department connections shall be located on a street front not less than 18 inches nor more than 4 feet above grade and shall be equipped with an approved straightway check valve and substantial plugs or caps. All fire department connections shall be protected against mechanical injury and shall be visible and accessible. The num- ber of fire department connections shall be determined by the Fire Department. 5. Outlets. Every standpipe shall be equipped with a 2V2-inch out- let not less than 2 feet nor more than 4 feet above the floor level at each story. All standpipes shall be equipped with a three-way 2Y2-inch outlet above the roof line when the roof has a pitch of less than 4 inches in 12 inches. Roof outlets are not required for roofs with a pitch greater 'than 4 inches in 12 inches. All outlets shall be installed so that a 12-inch long wrench may be used in connecting the hose with wrench clear- ance on all sides of the outlet. Standpipes located in smokeproof enclo- sures shall have outlets at the vestibule or balcony. Outlets above the fourth floor above grade shall be provided with 100 feet of 2V2-inch approved unlined fabric hose with 1 -inch orifice, straight -tipped brass 517 516 nozzle without a shutoff at the nozzle unless waived by the Fire De- partment. Such outlets shall be identified with a sign having a 3-inch high letters reading: "FIRE DEPARTMENT USE ONLY." The hose and nozzle shall be installed in an approved hose cabinet. An approved drip cock or drain connection shall be located between the standpipe outlet and the hose. Roof outlets need not be provided with hoses. III areas subject to freezing, wet standpipe systems shall be protected from freezing. 6. Signs. An approved durable sign with raised letters at least I inch high shall be permanently attached to all fire department street con- nections and test connections, and such sign shall read: "COMBINA- TION STANDPIPE AND TEST CONNECTIONS." Buildings, Under Construction See. 3806. (a) General. During the construction of a building and';/ until the permanent fire -extinguishing system has been installed and is in service, fire protection shall be provided in accordance with this Section. (b) Where Required. Every building, six stories or more in height, shall be provided with not less than one standpipe for fire department use during construction. Such standpipes shall be installed when the progress of construction is not more than 50 feet in height above grade. Such standpipe shall be provided with fire department inlet connec- tions at accessible locations adjacent to usable stairs'. Such standpipe systems shall be extended as construction progresses to within one floor of the highest point of construction having secured decking or flooring. In each floor there shall be provided a 2Y2-inch valve outlet for fire department use. Where construction height requires installation of a combination standpipe, fire pumps and water main connections shall be provided to serve the standpipe. (c) Temporary Standpipes. Temporary standpipes may be provided in place of permanent systems if they are designed to furnish 75 gallons of water per minute at 50 pounds per square inch pressure with a standpipe size of not less than 4 inches. All outlets shall be not less than 2 V2 inches. Pumping equipment sufficient to provide this pressure and volume shall be available at all times when a combination system is required. (d) Detailed Requirements. Standpipe systems for building under construction shall be installed as required for permanent standpipe systems. -518 Basement Pipe Inlets See. 3807. For basement pipe inlet requirements, see Appendix, Section 3807. 519 If any room in a building has a sloping ceiling, the prescribed ceiling height for the room is required in only one-half the area thereof. No portion of the room measuring less than 5 feet from the finished floor to the finished ceiling shall be included in any computation of the minimum area thereof. If any room has a furred ceiling, the prescribed ceiling height is required in two-thirds the area thereof, but in no case shall the height of the furred ceiling be less than 7 feet. Any portion of a garage shall have an unobstructed headroom clear- ance of not less than 6 feet 6 inches above the finish floor to any ceiling, beam, pipe, or similar construction except for wall -mounted shelves, storage surfaces, racks, or cabinets. (b) Floor Area. Every dwelling unit shall have at least one room which shall have not less than 150 square feet of floor area. Other habitable rooms except kitchens shall have an area of not less than 70 square feet. (c) Width. No habitable room other than a kitchen shall be less than 7 feet in any dimension. Efficiency Dwelling Units See. 1308. An efficiency dwelling unit shall conform to the require- ments of the Code except as herein provided: - I The unit shall have a living room of not less than 220 square feet 0 ial floor area. Light and ventilation conforming to this Code rovided. 4. The unit shall be provided with a separate bathroom containing a water closet, lavatory, and bathtub or shower. Shaft Enclosures Sec. 1309. Exits shall be enclosed as specified in Chapter 33. Elevator shafts, vent shafts, and other vertical openings shall be enclosed and the enclosure shall be as specified in Section 1706. Fire Detection and Fire -extinguishing Systems See. 1310. (a) Fire Detection Systems. Every dwelling unit within an apartment house shall be provided with approved detectors of products of combustion other than heat conforming to U.B.C. Standard No. 43-6 mounted on the ceiling or wall at a point centrally located in the corridor or area giving access to rooms used for sleeping purposes. in an efficiency dwelling unit the detector shall be centrally located on the ceiling of the main room. Where sleeping rooms are on an upper level, the detector shall be placed at the center of the ceiling directly 86 above the stairway. All detectors shall be located within 12 inches of the ceiling. Care shall be exercised to insure that the installation will not interfere with the operating characteristics of the detector. When actuated, the detector shall provide an alarm. (b) Fire -extinguishing Systems. When required by other provisions of this Code, automatic fire -extinguishing systems and standpipes shall be installed as specified in Chapter 38. Heating See. 1311. Every dwelling unit and guest room shall be provided with heating facilities capable of maintaining a room temperature of 70*17. at a point 3 feet above the floor in all habitable rooms. Special Hazards See. 1312. Chimneys and heating apparatus shall conform to the requirements of Chapter 37 of this Code and the Mechanical Code. The storage and handling of gasoline, fuel Oil, and other flammable liquids shall be in accordance with U.B.C. Standard No. 10-1. Doors leading into, rooms in which volatile flammable liquids are stored or used shall be protected by a fire assembly having a one -hour fire -protection rating. Such fire assembly shall be self -closing and shall be posted with a sign on each side of the door in 1 -inch block letters stating: "FIRE DOOR —KEEP CLOSED." I Every room containing a boiler or central heating plant shall be separated from the rest of the building by not less than a One -Hour Fire -Resistive Occupancy Separation. EXCEPTION: A separation shall not be required for such rooms with equipment serving only one dwelling unit. Existing Buildings See. 1313. For existing buildings see Appendix, Section, 1313 E11111" ui? c- t cl 7 3 87 `1 extinguishing fire, training purposes, recharging, or making necessary repairs, or when perTnitted by the Fire* Department. Whenever a fire appliance is removed as herein permitted, it shall be replaced or re- installed as soon as the purpose for which it was removed has been accomplished. Fire Barrier Sec. 13.203. The Chief or other officer of the Fire Department in charge at the scene of an emergency shall have the authority to place ropes, guards, barricades or other obstructions across any street, alley, place or private property in the vicinity of such operation so as to pre- vent accident or interference with the lawful efforts of the Fire De- partment to manage and control the situation and to handle fire appa- ratus. Tampering With Barriers, Etc. Sec. 13.204. No person, except a person authorized by the Chief or a public officer acting within the scope of his public auties, shall remove, unlock, destroy, tamper with, or otherwise molest in any man- ner any lock, gate, door, barricade, chain, enclosure, sign, tag or seal which has been lawfully installed by the Fire Department or by its order or under its control. Closure of Fire Roads: Parking Thereon See. 13.205. (a) The Chief may install one or more gates, cables or other barricades, and securely lock tile same to prevent the use by unauthorized persons of any road that is not a public highway and over which the Fire Department has the right to pass, whether by ease- ment, license, municipal ownership, or otherwise, for purposes relating to fire prevention or control, provided such action does not preclude the authorized users of such road or trail from using the same, (b) No person, except a public officer acting within the scope of his public duties, shall trespass upon . any road or trail which has been closed and obstructed in the manner authorized by this Section without the express permission of the Chief; nor shall any person park any vehicle so as to obstruct the entrance to such road or trail. Obstructing Fire Hydrants Sec. 13.206. No person shall place or keep any post, fence, growth, trash or other material or thing near any fire hydrant that would pre- vent such hydrant from being immediately discernible or in any other manner deter or hinder tile Fire Department from gaining immediate access to a fire hydrant. Hydrant Use Approval Sec. 13.207. No person shall use or operate any hydrant or other valves installed oil any water system inee%ded for use by the Chief for fire suppression purposes and which is accessible to any public high- 74 way, alley or private way open to or generally used by the public, unless such person first secures a permit for use from the Chief. This section does not apply to the use of a hydrant or other valves by a person employed by and authorized to make such use by the water company which supplies water to such hydrants or other valves. Required Vertical Driveway Clearance Sec. 13.208. Access driveways serving buildings or property located more than 150 feet from a street shall have a vertical clearance of not less than 12 feet above the finished driveway surface. EXCEPTION: Groups I and j Occupancies as specified in the Building Code. Where auxiliary means of access or fire protective measures, ap- proved by the Chief, are provided, the above required clearance max be modified or waived. Division III INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE OF FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS AND APPLIANCES Installation See. 13.301. (a) The Chief shall designate the type and number of fire appliances to be installed and maintained in and upon all buildings and premises in the jurisdiction other than private dwellings. This shall be clone according to the relative severity of probable fire, including the rapidity with which it may spread. Such appliances shall be of a type stlita�le for the probable class of fire associated with such build- ing or premises and shall have approval of the Chief. (b) In occupancies of all especially hazardous nature, or where special hazards exist in addition to the normal hazard of the occu- pancy, or where access for fire apparatus is unduly difficult, additional safeguards may be required consisting of additional fire appliance units, more than one type of appliance, or special systems suitable for the protection of the hazard involved. Such devices or appliances may consist of automatic fire alarm systems, automatic sprinkler or water spray systems, standpipe and ]lose, fixed or portable fire extinguishers. suitable asbestos blankets, breathing apparatus, manual or automatic covers, or carbon dioxide, foam or other special fire -extinguishing sys- tems, Where such systems are installed, they shall be in accordance with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Associ- ation, (C) All premises %%,here buildings or portions of buildings other thail dxvcllings are hereafter constructed and located more than 150 feet from a public street providing access to such premises shall be provided as may be required by the Chief, with approved fire hydrants collilected to a water system capable of supplying the fire flow required by the Chief. The location of such hydrants shall be as designated by the Chief. Paved access to fire hydrants shall be provided and maintained to accommodate fire fighting apparatus. 75 Maintenance Sec. 13.302. All sprinkler systems, fire hydrant systems, standpipe systems, fire alarm systems, portable fire extinguishers and other fire - protective or extinguishing systems or appliances which have been installed in compliance with any permit or order, or because of any law or ordinance, shall be maintained in an operative condition at all times and shall be replaced or repaired when defective. All repairs and ser- vicing shall be made in accordance with recognized standards. Vaporizing Liquid Extinguishers Sec. 13.303. (a) Vaporizing Liquid Extinguishers shall not be installed or used in any location except as provided in this Section. Vaporizing liquid extinguishers may be installed or used as follows: 1. Pole top fires. 2. "Rib" fires in cotton gins. 3. Used by lumber jacks in conformance with State and Federal regulations. 4, Anv other installation or use when the Chief determines that such installation or use is not contrary to public safety or welfare. (b) Existing installations are as follows: 1, Those extinguishers in areas other than as listed in Section 13.303 (a) which were installed prior to the effective date of these regulations may continue in use, provided such use as determined by the inspection authority is not contrary to public safety or welfare. 2. When extingWshers located in areas other than as listed in Sec- tion 13.303 (b) and installed prior to the effective date of these regula- tions are to be replaced, such extinguishers shall be replaced with those approved for such installation by local authorities. Replacement extinguishers shall not be of the vaporizing liquid type. Sale of Defective Fire Extinguishers See. 13.304. No person shall sell or trade any form, type or kind of fire extinguisher which is not approved, or which is not in proper "vork- ing order, or the contents of which do not meet the requirements of this Code; provided, however, this shall not apply to the sale or trade of fire extinguishers to any erson or firm engaged in the business of selling or handling of suX extinguishers or the sale or exch . ange of obsolete or damaged equipment for junk. Fire Extinguishers in Parking Areas Sec. 13.305. No person shall operate any lot, parcel of land or premises where three or more vehicles are stored kept or parked for the public in the open air, whether a charge be rn,�de for such Karking or not, and where an attendant is on dul, without keeping a rst aid fire appliance, approved by the Chief, on hand at all times. 76 Fire Extinguishers in Auto and Trailer Camps See. 13.306. (a) In all auto and trailer camps, there shall be in- stalled and maintained in good repair, 3/4-inch standpipes connected to sufficiently large water mains, to which shall be permanently affixed good grade garden hose, not greater than 100 feet in length with a Boston type garden hose nozzle or its equivalent attached, Such hose shall be enclosed in a cabinet approved by the Fire Department and plainly marked "FOR FIRE ONLY." A sufficient number of these stand- pipe units shall be installed in each auto and trailer camp so that at least one nozzle will reach any building, trailer, or trailer site. Fire Alarm Systems Sec. 13.307. (a) Every apartment house three stories or more in height and containing more than 15 apartments and every hotel three, stories or more in height containing 20 or more guest rooms, shall have installed therein an approved automatic or manually operated fire alarm system designed to warn the occu ants of the building in the event of fire. Such fire alarm system shall �e so designed that all occu- pants of the building may be warned simultaneously. (b) No signal system or intercommunicating system used for any purpose other than fire warning meets the requirements of this Article. . (c) Installation, inspection, and maintenance of the fire alarm sys- tem shall- be according to the standards set forth in NFPA Pamphlet No. 72 A. (d) Stations for operating any manually operated fire alarm system shall be placed immediately adjacent to the telephone switchboard in the building, if there is a switchboard, and at such other locations as may be required by the Chief. Fire -Extinguishing Systems Sec. 13.308. (a) General. All fire -extinguishing systems shall be installed in accordance with the requirements of this Article. All hose threads used in connection with fire-extin gui shin g systems shall comply with the standards of the Fire Department, (b) Definitions. COMBINATION STANDPIPE is a fire line system with a constant water supply and installed for the use of the Fire De- partment and the occupants of the building. DRY STANDPIPE is a fire line system without a constant water supply and equipped with fire department inlet and outlet connec- tions and installed exclusively for the use of the Fire Department. FIRE DEPARTMENT HOSE CONNECTION is a hose connec- tion at grade or street level for use by the Fire Department only. WET STANDPIPE is an auxiliary fire line system with a cons' * ant water supply installed primarily for emergency fire use by the occu- pants of the building. 77 (c) Approvals. All fire-extinguisliffig systems including automatic sprinklers, combination standpipes, dry and wet standpipes, special automatic extinguishing systems, and basement inlet pipes shall be approved by the Chief and shall be subject to such periodic tests as may be required. Detailed Installation Requirements See. 13.309. Fire -extinguishing systems shall be installed and main- tained in accordance with the Standards of the National Fire Protee- tion Association. EXCEPTIONS: 1. Automatic fire -sprinkler systems shall have at least one water supply of adequate pressure, capacity and reliability'. 2. Automatic fire-sprinker systems may be connected to the domestic water supply main when approved by the Chief provided the domestic water supply is of adequate pressure, capacity and sizing for the combined domestic and fire sprinkler requirements. In such case, the fire -sprinkler system connection shall be made between the public water main or nieter and the building sbutoff valve and there shall not be intervening valves or connections. The fire department' connections may be ornitted when approved by the Chief. 3, The sprinkler alarm valve for an automatic fire -sprinkler system may be omitted xvhen the sprinkler system serves less than six heads or where the system is connected to ,in approved fire alarm system. Dry Standpipes Sec. 13.310. (a) General. Dry standpipes where required by the Building Code shall comply with the requirements of this Section. (b) Location. There shall be one dry standpipe outlet connection located at every floor level landing above the first floor of every re- quired enclosed stairway or smokeproof enclosure, Outlets at enclosed stairways shall be located within the enclosure. No point within a building requiring dry standpipes shall be more than 130 feet travel distance from a dry standpipe outlet connection. Portions of dry standpipe systems not located within an enclosed stairway or smokeproof enclosure shall be protected by a degree of fire resistance equal to that required for vertical enclosur�s in the building in which they are located, (c) Detailed Requirements. 1. Construction. The size of the standpipe shall be not less than 2% inches in diameter when the height of the riser is 50 feet or more above the source and shall be not less than 2 inches in diameter when the height of the riser is less than 50 feet above the source. 3. Outlets. All interior wet standpipes shall be equipped with a V/2-inch valve in each story, including the basement or cellar of the building and located not less than 3 feet nor more than 6 feet above the floor. 4. Water supply, The wet standpipe shall deliver not less than 35 gallons of water per minute at not less than 25 pounds per square inch residual pressure from each of any two outlets flowing simultaneously for 30 minutes. When more than one interior wet standpipe is required in the building, such standpipes may be connected at their bases or highest points by pipes of equal size, Where combination standpipes are installed, the 11/2-ineb outlet system may be supplied from the com- bination system with a 2-inch connecting line. 5. Pressure and gravity tanks. Pressure or gravity tanks shall have a capacity sufficient to furnish at least 70 gallons of water per minute for 30 minutes. Other such tanks shall be located so as to provide not less than 25-pound per square inch residual pressure from each of two outlets flowing simultaneously for 30 minutes, Discharge pipes from pressure tanks shall extend 2 inches from and into the bottom of such tanks. All tanks shall be equipped with a manhole, ladder and platform, drainpipe, water and pressure gauges, and a pressure relief valve. Each pressure tank shall be tested in place after installation and proved tight at a hydrostatic pressure of 50 per cent in excess of the working pres- sure required, but not less than 150 pounds per square inch. Where such tanks are tised also for domestic purposes, the supply takeoff for such purposes shall be located above the required capacity of such tanks. Supply tanks shall be supported on noncombustible construction with not less than 3-foot clearances over the top and under the bottom to adjacent construction. Approved pressure gauges shall be provided at pressure tanks and at the air pump. 6. Fire pumps. Fire pumps shall he approved and shall deliver not less than the required fire flow and pressure. Such pumps shall be sup- plied with adequate power source and shall be automatic in operation, Where the wet standpipe system is supplied with water from the domestic supply of the building, approved fire pumps shall not be required provided the domestic pump used delivers the required fire flow, 7. Hose and hose reels. Each wet standpipe outlet shall besupplied with a hose not less than 11/2 inches in diameter. Stich hose shall be 80 4� equipped with an approved variable fog nozzle. An approved hose reel rack or cabinet shall be provided and shall be located so as to make the hose accessible. Where the static pressure at any standpipe outlet exceeds 100 pounds per square inch an ap roved pressure re- duction device shall be permanently installed at Te outlet to reduce the water flow so that the nozzle pressure does not exceed 80 pounds per square inch in accordance with Table No. 13.311. Basement pipe inlets shall be installed in the first floor of every story, warehouse, or factory having cellars or basements. (b) Location. The location of basement pipe inlets shall be as required by the Chief. (c) Detailed Requirements. All basement pipe inlets shall be of cast iron, steel, brass, or bronze with lids of cast brass or bronze. The basement pipe inlet shall consist of a sleeve not less than 8 inches inside diameter extending through the floor and terminating flush with or through the basement or cellar ceiling and shall have a top flange recessed with an inside shoulder to receive the lid, Tile top flange shall be installed flush with finish floor surface. The lid shall be a solid casting and have a lift recessed in tile top. This lid shall be pro- vided with a cast -in sign reading: "FIRE DEPARTMENT ONLY, DO NOT COVER." The door will be repaired soon and I requested a certification on the proper functioning of the fire door (annual certification). I'm on it. Thanks for the notice. 5-4-05 Contacted Jim and looked at the door. Due to the amount of damage I would say the door will not function properly if activated by a fire. The options I gave Jim were 1) fix the door 2) drop the door and secure it in place 3) remove the door and construct a fire wall of the required rating. I also suggested he get a copy of the building plans and see whether the door could be replaced with an alternate design or possibly removed.
