Regarding: RESPONSE TO PETITION FOR SI]DEWALK ALONG
MAPLEWOOD DRIVE IN EDMONDS
From: Cannon Clyborne, Anne and Richard Klein, property owners on Maplewood Drive
1) Safety: The idea of a sidewalk has been raised as a safety issue.
A) We feel that a low curb would offer little in the way of real safety.
B) We feel the real issue is cars that speed on our street.
B) Because of speeding, children would still need to be guarded on Maplewood
Drive, whether we have a sidewalk or not.
D) We have spoken to adults who walk on our street daily and they do not
feel unsafe. We walk on our street and feel safe.
E) In terms of value for money spent, a sidewalk is not cost effective when speeding
is the real issue. For those who feel unsafe, we think that better posting and/or
better patrolling would be a more efficient use of funds.
2) Impact: Our two properties would be those most adversely affected on the street.
Both families have spent large amounts of time and resources to beautify and improve
what once were unsightly street -side areas. These areas now lie directly in the path of
the proposed sidewalk. The Kleins have suffered severe flooding problems, which
very possibly will be exacerbated by the barrier to drainage caused by a sidewalk.
This would need to be studied.
3) Timeliness: Being the most impacted, we are concerned that we were among the last
neighbors to be consulted before the petition was submitted. We were also assured
that we would receive notice before the petition went to the council, so all sides might
be represented. So we were shocked when, on Thursday, we discovered only
accidentally that the petition was in the hands of the city. With little time to prepare a
response or to canvas the neighborhood for people who feel similarly, we feel
unfairly constrained.
4) Residents Only: Many people signing the petition do not live on Maplewood
Drive and would suffer no impact whatsoever to their property.
5) Attractiveness: When we bought our homes one of the most attractive features was,
and continues to be, the semi -rural feeling of this lovely wooded street. A sidewalk
would be out of place, an eyesore in this setting.
Thank you for your kind attention to our petition response.
Respectfully submitted,
Cannon Clyborne Anne and, Richard Klein
