May 5, 1977
SUBJECT: PLUGGED SEWER - 20711'& 20713 82ND AVENUE WEST
On Thursday, April 28, 1977, at approximately 9:00 p.m.,
Ken Kukuk, Water Watch, was notified of a plugged sewer at
20711 & 20713 82nd Avenue West. Upon arrival, Ken checked
-the manhole on the 8-inch sanitary sewer main and found the
flow to be normal. Ken then checked the residences for possi-
ble damage and found no visible evidence other than back-up
in the bath tubs. He suggested the Wilsons, 20713 82nd Avenue
West, contact Roto Rooter to perhaps clear their line, but was
informed that Roto Rooter had derooted the line on Monday,
April 25. Ken asked both residences if they could wait until
the following morning when a Sewer Division crew could investi-
gate the problem further. They both agreed.
At 7:00 a.m., Friday, April 29, 1 was notified of the
stoppage and was asked to check with both residences at 7:30 a.m.
At that time, I went to see where the problem existed and found
that they were both connected into the same lateral. Since
there was a 25-foot poplar tree planted over the sewer lateral
serving both properties, I decided to dig up the lateral at
theproperty to -see if there could be a root problem.
After exposing the lateral, we put a hole into the top of
the 6-inch sewer pipe and found there was still a blockage. We
then removed 3.sections of 6-inch tile, hand rodded the remain-
ing sections of tile, and pulled back a massive root ball which
we determined was at the "t" connection. After that was removed,
we replaced the sections of tile, backfilled, and cleaned up the
area. Normal flow to the residences was reestablished at 2:30
p.m.
Ken responded to both addresses but primarily talked with
the resident at 20713 82nd Avenue West, Elaine Wilson, since the
owner of 20711 82nd Avenue West did not give her name.
