MEMO FOR RECORD
SUBJECT: SEWER STOPPAGE 21321 92ND PLACE
On April 26, 1978, at approximately 8:00 p.m. I was notified by
SnoCom of a plugged sewer at the H'.L. Hull residence, 21321 92nd
Place West, Edmonds.. I arrived at the Hull residence at 8:05 p.m.
and immediately checked the manhole affecting the Hull property;
the flow was found to be normal. I then checked with the resident
to the south of the Hull property to see if he had any trouble or had
any backup of sewer. The property owner said there was no trouble
and that his service was normal.
Mr. Hull then informed me that he had a roto rooter service rod
his line and it was found to be clear. The service then tried to
rod through a clean out located in front of the Hull property; they
were unable to rod through the clean out. Mr. Hull said that he
could wait until the following day until the City could further
investigate the stoppage.
On Thursday, April 27, the City Sewer Division crews began digging
at the location where roto rooter could not rod. Upon uncovering
the eight inch sewer main, roots from a nearby poplar tree were
running along the top section of the sewer main indicating the possible
cause of the stoppage.
Upon removing a section of tile we found an extensive root growth
cutting off service to the Hull property. We removed the growth
along with three or four rocks and established normal flow at 11:30
a.m. We then replaced the section of tile, backfilled and cleaned the
area. We then informed Mr. Hull's mother of the cause of stoppage
so she could explain it to her son.
