I imagine by now you have visited the construction site at Kruger Clinic. I visited as well - it's the first time I have seen it
since the demolition was done. I was pretty shocked by the extent of construction that is not close to what was
documented on the drawings. I can imagine that this less-tha n-com pliant construction extends throughout the original
half of the building.
I am going to the project OAC meeting tomorrow and will address with the owner, tenant, and contractor the extent to
which the construction does not match what was directed by the original documents. I am sure the question will be
"What are we going to need to do, to continue on with the project?" And I will tell them that we need to come to some
kind of agreement with the building department as they are charged with the public safety.
We have discussed the difficulty of trying to make everything conform to what would be a Type V-1HR building in 1985 or
in 2015, as the original building would need to be renovated from top to bottom. I don't know if you have any idea about
what would be acceptable to you. I have a notion that encasing all the new and existing construction within our space
with 5/8" type X gypsum board, all the way up to but not including the joists would give us a level of fire -protection that is
FAR beyond what is currently in place, and thus would be an improvement in safety. We would use fire -rated ceilings as
currently detailed. I imagine the client may choke on an expense like this which is far beyond what anyone expected to
spend - but no one expected to find a building in this kind of shape. But I don't think anything less than this could give you
any sense that the project is similar to 1-HR construction. if you think that something less or different is a sufficient
approach, please make a suggestion.
Let me know your thoughts, so we can let the owner make an informed decision about the status of the project.

Thank you for your email. There are 5 of these fire hoses in the common areas and I'm looking at 3 options and am
obtaining pricing:
1. Remove hose and cap, leave the cabinet and place a fire extinguisher in there
2. Remove hose and cap, remove the cabinet and drywall
3. Leave in place and have serviced
In the Swedish tenant improvement space there is one fire hose, I believe the route they will be going is to have Andersen
Construction decommission the cabinet and drywall over the hole. We are fine with this.
I will let you know what I decide regarding the building hoses. I appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Thanks for the question about decommissioning the standpipe cabinets in the project area.
I reviewed the Kruger address file at the fire department. The original requirements for the Kruger Clinic included a class
11 standpipe installation required by UBC (1988) Table 38-A for the purpose of group 132 occupancy (office) greater than
20,000 s.f. per floor (actual measure for Kruger was 45,000 s.f. across both floors). A class 11 standpipe consists of 100'
hose hand lines in cabinets covering all portions of the building are within 30' of a nozzle.
The hoses require periodic pressure testing, drying, and re -hanging. I have no records that has been accomplished.
The fire marshal at the time of construction suggested a class III arrangement that would also provide a function for
responding firefighters. The suggestion was not taken. His comment was that a class 11 standpipe is intended for
occupant use only, much like a fire brigade, or organized response private response team. At this date, I know no such
group and with Snohomish County FD#1 now serving your fire emergency needs and alternative features for use by
private persons, an organized brigade is neither necessary nor recommended.
My suggestion to you is remove the hose hand lines, decommission and cap the water connections, and know that you
have fire extinguishers for private use where needed for a fire emergency. Kruger Clinic also has an automatic fire alarm
system monitoring the corridors on both levels. Stevens (now Swedish) hospital was given the same approval about 1S
years ago to remove their hose hand lines from service in the hospital tower.
I would like Erika's approval for Kyle to remove standpipes in TI area, and Erika's assistance to decommission those in
the rest of the building. Please acknowledge your receipt of this information and a timeline proposal to accomplish the
task.

OBSERVATION ON ARRIVAL:
HAZ-MAT 5 WAS ASKED TO PARK IN THE SOUTHEAST PARKING LOT OF 216 & HWY 99. 216
COMMAND HAD THE HOT ZONE ESTABLISH AROUND THE CAR WITH AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE.
THEY HAD CALLED THE WSP, TO LET THEM KNOW WHAT THEY HAD. WSP WANTED US TO DO A
RECON TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE WAS NO OTHER HAZARD IN THE CAR.
OPERATION:
HAZ-MAT 5 DID A HAZARD RISK ASSESSMENT & FOUND THAT THIS SHOULD BE A LEVEL B
ENTRY. SO WE CALLED FOR A FULL TEAM RESPONSE. F.F JOHNSTON TOOK THE TEAM
LEADER ROLE, F.F. ARNIM WAS ASSIGNED RESOURCE, & F.F. YOAKUM STARTED ON GETTING
THE DECON LINE READY. AS OTHER TEAM MEMBERS SHOWED UP WE THEY WERE ASSIGNED TO
OTHER JOBS. THE ENTRY TEAM FOUND 4 BOTTLES OF AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE & A BOTTLE OF
CARBOLIC ACID. WSP STATED THAT THE AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE WAS NO A PROBLEM AND
COULD BE LEFT IN THE CAR FOR THE OWNER TO TAKE CAR OF. THE CAR WAS THEN TURN
OVER TO EPD.
OTHER INFO:

Description
The 70886 is a dual chamber ionization
type smoke detector head assembly. It
detects both smoldering and flaming fires.
It fits a variety of detector bases permit-
ting connection to 2 or 4 wire initiating
loops. Sensitivity may be checked with a
70898 sensitivity monitor and detector
operation may be checked with a mag-
netic head 70899.
The 70886 includes a built-in LED which
blinks app * roximately once each second
to inclicait 6 tii� head is powered. This LED
also lights continuously when the detec-
tor is in �1��m, latching on, and remaining
lit until the detector is reset.
Operation
The 70886 Ionization Smoke Detector has
two chambers: an outer sampling
chamber and an inner balance chamber.
Smoke or invisible combustion gases can
freely penetrate the outer chamber, but
the inner chamber is virtually closed to
prevent easy entry. With both chambers
ionized by a single radioactive source, a
very small current flows. The presence of
visible smoke or invisible gases have a
great influence upon the current flow in
the outer chamber, causing a change in
the voltage ratio between the chambers.
This difference isthen amplified insidethe
detector and when it becomes great
enough, causes the detector to go into
alarm.
Application
The 70886 has responsive, yet high op-
erational stabilitythat gives it an extremely
wide range of uses. It is best suited for use
in areas where early warning of trouble
from super -heated or flaming combus-
tibles is expected. The detector's design
allows use in a wide range of humidities,
temperaturesand airvelocities. The 70886
is also constructed to be effectively used
where outside RF and other electrical
interference is expected to be encoun-
tered.
The 70886 with its 70891 or 70892 low
profilebase is electrically compatible with
all Gamewell initiating zone modules.
Current compatible detection devices with
the 70886 utilizing the same base are the
70.884 photoelectric smoke detector and
the 70887,.70888, 70889 or 70890 heat
detectors. Only the smoke detectors have
alarm LED's. Special latching bases can
be used with heat detectors to provide the
alarm LED indicator.
Engineer's Specification
The contractor shall furnish and install
where indicated on the plans, dual -
chamber, ionization smoke detectors
Gamewell Model 70886. The combination
detector head and twist -lock base shall
be UL listed compatible with a UL listed
fire alarm panel.
The base shall permit direct interchange
with Gamewell 70884 photoelectric de-
tector and with Gamewell 70887, 70888,
70889 and 70890 heat detectors. The base
shall limit the alarm current available to
detectors to 20mA.
The smoke detector shall have a flashing
status LED for visual supervision. When
the detector is actuated, the flashing LED
will latch on steady and at full brilliance.
The detector may be reset by actuating the
control panel reset switch.
The sensitivity of the detector shall be
capable of being measured.
The vandal -resistant, security locking
feature shall be used in those areas as
indicated on the drawings. The locking
feature shall be field removable when not
required.
It shall be possible to perform a functional
test of the detector without the need of
generating smoke. The test method shall
simulate effectsof productsof combustion
in the chamber to ensure testing of all
detector circuits.
To facilitate installation, the detector shall
be non -polarized. Voltage and RF tran-
sient suppression techniques shall be
employed to minimize false alarm poten-
tial. Auxiliary SPDT relays shall be installed
where indicated.

The Edmonds Fire Department utilizes a security "lock box" system
which provides Fire Department access during an emergency while
maintaining the utmost security for your keys.
The.Lock Box may be secured outside a variety'of locations.
Fire department accessible spaces may include; main entry, alarm
room/panels, automatic sprinkler/ standpipe riser rooms and
electrical or mechanical rooms, depending upon your business and
the building.
The secured access items may include keys, written combinations
for locks and electronic keypads or manual buttons and switches for
elect ' rically-activated access.
This is a strictly voluntary program. Any company who desires
may request an authorization letter from the Edmonds Fire
Department.

This letter will amend my previous letter of June 4,
1991. 1 was mistakenly under the impression that the new
addition was separated by an area separation wall which would
have kept the new section separate, thereby not requiring the
Class 2 standpipe. Per our conversation today, I stand cor-
rected and reinstate the requirement for a standpipe system.
However, I still recommended that the standpipe system design
be upgraded to a Class 3. A Class 2 system is limited in use
and is intended for in-house fire brigade use. While a Class
3 system is designed for use by Fire Department personnel.

CNA Architecture Group is providing your office with two sets of corrected Plans and Project Manuals for
you review and comment. The corrected Plans and Project Manuals are a result of ICBO
correspondence of October 5, 1990 nonstructural review comments, and of October 10, 1990 mechanical
and structural review comments. I will address each of these letters separately. Also, attached is
additional correspondence to CNA from the consulting engineers describing their corrective actions
relative to the aforementioned ICBO correspondence, of which I will refer to.

Nonstructural review comments.
1 . No architectural or consultant response is necessary.
2. The waste line location was revised, see drawing 1/C1.1, Civil Site Plan. See Mechanical
engineers response letter.
3. The parking lot grades have been coordinated between sheets L1.1 and C1.1. Drawing L1.1
revised to reflect the grades shown on drawing C 1. 1, and a notation of "See Civil Site Plan for
final site grading.".
4. The design of the new addition and site improvements utilized the State of Washington Barrier
Free Accessibility Code, WAC 51 -10. The mechanical engineer submitted to the City of
Edmonds the necessary documentation describing Energy Code compliance.See Electrical
Engineers response letter. See Electrical Engineers response letter.

a. The Barrier free parking space requirement has been met by providing six (6) barrier
free parking stalls. Each stall is eight feet six inches (8'-6") wide with an adjacent

been met. The plan provides the requirement of two percent of (2) of two
hundred sixteen (216) parking space provided yields five (5) parking spaces, and
six (6) parking spaces have been provide. Refer to drawing 6/A1.1, Site Plan.
1.b. The parking layout was revised relocating the stalls in question to the west
entrance, and eliminating the necessity of crossing traffic. Refer to drawing
6/A1.1, Site Plan.
1.j. Signs displaying the International Symbol of Access have been placed at the
south entrance and the west entrance of the building. Also, signage is provided
at each parking space. Refer to drawing 6/A1.1, Site Plan.
2.f. The interior wall and cabinetry elevation of Toilet, 2001, drawing 17/AS.6, was
revised to note the guarding of the plumbing lines.
3.b. No architectural or consultant response is necessary.
3.g. The building is a medical office building. The primary routes throughout the
facility are handicapped accessible, All patients and visitors are escorted to and
from the exam rooms within each suite. Any patient needing assistance within
the exam room will receive it from their escort. The doors to each of these exam
rooms has a reverse swing to provide visual privacy for a patient in the exam
room. since each patient is escorted into and from the exam room, we are
requesting that the one foot six inch (V-6"), and one foot (1'-0") clearance
required on the latch side of the door be waived.
3.h. Mens'Toilet, 1002, and Womens' Toilet, 1003, are not barrier -free. Barrier -free
toilets are provided in the building. Toilet, 2001, is a unisex barrier -free toilet.
These toilets are accessible via elevator from the First Floor.
3.1. Signage is noted to be provided adjacent to stairs, elevator, toilet rooms, and
other spaces. See Room Finish and Accessories Schedule, drawing 1/A2.7, and
Room Finish and Accessories Schedule Remarks, drawing 21A2.7, items 13 and
14.
4.k. A handrail installed on the ramp from the new entry court, located on the south
side of the building, to the existing building is provided with a handrail. Refer to
drawing 2/A1.1, Site Plan. A detail drawing is added to the documents clarifying
the construction of handrail. Refer to drawing 1 1/A8.2.
4.k. A handrail installed on the retaining wall near the south entry court, located on

3. Appropriate window assemblies, an air infiltration barrier, appropriate door
hardware, and sealants are used to minimize air infiltration. See Wall Section,
drawing 1/A3.3, and the various door and window details drawings 3, 4, 7, and 8/

October 8, 1990, indicating that the quantities of materials on site are minimal
10. A centralized manifolded medical gas system is not provided in the new addition, consequently, a
room for this is not needed.
ii. The finishes of the Toilet rooms was revised. Toilet room finishes are (1) ceramic file floor with a
ceramic tile wainscot on appropriate wall, or (2) resilient sheet vinyl floor with plastic laminate
wainscot on appropriate walls. See Room Finish And Accessories Schedule, Drawing 1/A2.7.
12. The Project Manual, Section 01060, Regulatory Requirements paragraph 1.01.D requires the
contractor to have on -site the Uniform Building Code, Gypsum Association Manual, and the
Underwriter's Laboratory manuals.
13. The CNA Architecture Group relied upon information furnished by the Client to determine the
existing buildings type of construction. This information consisted of drawings prepared by
Salmon Bay Design Group, Seattle, Washington, dated March 19, 1985, which states the building
is constructed to meet the requirements of Type V - One hour fire -resistive construction. An on -
site investigation of the existing buildings construction was not done.
14. The construction of the vertical shafts for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning duct work was
clarified in drawings 23/A8.2 24/A8.2, 25/A8.2, and 26/A8.2.
15. The roof insulation system at the low slope roof was revised from an insulation installed between
structural wood joists to an installation installed above the plywood roof deck. See Wall Section,
drawing 1/A3.3, and the Project Manual, Section 07510, Built-up Bituminous Roofing. The new
system places insulation and vapor barrier above the structure. The "Roof Vents, 1.0 square
feet" have been removed from the low -slope roof.
16. The aftic ventilation of the existing building in the area of new roof connection was increased by
the addition of louvers. See Roof Plan, drawing 2/A2.8, notation which reads "Louvers with
screen." in the existing mansard.
17. The method of insulating the low -slope roof was revised, see item 15 response. Also, see

19. The Wall Section drawings 2VA3.3, and 3/A3.3 include the notation "2X fire stop, typical all wall,
at 8'-0" above finished floor', and the graphic symbol.
20. The acoustic suspension system detailing was revised, see drawing 3/A6.1.
21. The existing first story corridor is a pre-existing condition relative to the new addition. No
architectural or consultant response is necessary.
22. The means of egress from Suite 1 A is through the new building addition, The means of egress
from Suite 1 B is directly to the exterior. The occupant load of Suites 1 A, and 1 B combined is
twenty-six (26) occupants, and Table 33-A will allow a single means of egress when the occupant
load does not exceed 30. The storage room and mechanical equipment rooms means of egress
is via the stairs to the first floor, with a combined occupant load of twenty-three (23) occupants.
23. The Pharmacy, Suite 1 F, is separated from Corridor, room 1000, and Entry, room 1004, by two
overhead coiling doors, 1 -hour fire -resistive rated, numbers I F01 A', and I F01 13'. RefertoFirst
Floor Plan, drawing 4/A2.2, and Door Schedule, drawing 1/A2.8.
24. The door from the existing doctor's suite, Suite 1 A, was mislabeled, and was corrected from
1004B to 1 A01. See First Floor Plan, drawing 4/A2.2. The new interior windows between the
existing doctor's suite, Suite 1A, and Entry, 1004, are window types W and V, as shown in
Window Schedule, drawing 1/A3.1, with the notation "h.m. (hollow metal) frame with wire glass".
25. The Door Schedule, drawing 1/A2.8, was corrected noting glazing in doors as wire glass.

27. The hallway system for Suite 2R, comprising of Halls 2RO4, 2R22, and 2R27, is enclosed by one -
hour, fire -rated walls extending from the floor to the structure above, as detailed by drawing
I 5/A2.1, Similar'. The suspended acoustic tile ceiling is non -rated. The mechanical HVAC duct
work opening into this space is protected by fire dampers, see Second Floor Plan - Air Condition
& Heating, sheet M-5. The corridor is designed with acceptable dead ends less than twenty feet
(20'-0% per UBC 3305(e).

We have reviewed the plans and associated data for the
project mentioned above to see if it conforms to the Uniform
Building. Code as well as parts of the Uniform Mechanical
Code. We have not reviewed them for requirements of federal,
or other state and local regulatory agencies. In most cases,
the designer should modify the plans and/or specifications
to satisfy these comments. I
NONSTRUCTURAL
1. You should coordinate all city approvals, especially for
the increased flow into the sewer line as well as possible
"industrial waste".
2. Note that sheet M-2 shows the waste line exiting near
line. D and then refers you to the civil drawings. Sheet
C-1.2 seems to show it going into a catch basin which, of
course, wouldn't be correct. A redesign seems necessary.
3. The parking lot grades so not appear to agree between
sheets C1.2 and 1-1.1-

4. These plans should comply with the state requirements for. energy
and the handicapped. Although we do not publish or maintain these
codes we are providing guide sheets which explain the requirements.
5. Soils report #W-6896 by Rittenhouse- Zeman and Associates and dated
June 14, 1990 complies with most of the requirements of section 2905.
However, additional test or calculatiori data is required to justify the
pile criteria. Section 2908(a) . Also, the method of verifying its capacity
in the field should be given in an addendum.
6. Special inspection should be provided for the soil work. Section
306 (a) . This should be noted on the plans.
7. However, the architect, engineer, or soils engineer should discuss
what happens with the utility lines coming into this relatively rigid building
if the lines outside of the outline will sink. Also, how will this addition
react relative to the existing building?
8. Three 451 wide yards are required to be kept clear -of buildings on
the north, south and east sides of the entire building. Section 506 (a) 2.
You should keep this information in your permanent files for future reference.

9. The materials used or stored in the pharmacy should be described
so that we can ensure it isn't a H-7 occupancy. Section 901 (a).
10. 1 would imagine that medical gases are used in this building. If
so, the room then are in should be separated from the rest of the building
by a one hour occupancy separation and should have the exterior door
and ventilation requirements of section 702(b) provided.
11. All the toilet rooms should have a wall finish around the water closets
which is equivalent to ceramic tile (paint on drywall is not). Section
510 (a) . You should also decide if sheet vinyl is equivalent to ceramic
tile on the floors.
12. There are many references to ICBO evaluation reports or Drywall
Association design numbers for fire resistance of the structural elements.
This is good as far as it goes but the exact details of how double layers
of drywall are to be attached and joints staggered, for instance, should
be shown --all details should be on the plans --they could attach the report
details to the plans if they want.
13. You should verify that the existing building was constructed to
one hour construction also.
14. The construction of the vent shaft in waiting 2RO2 should be shown
including the base --the mechanical plans sheet M-3 show a duct entering
the side of it so the base must be below the floor system. Also, it should
extend to the roof sheathing. Section 1706 (a) .

replaced when the new addition blocks them?
17. However, the structural plans will require a positive connection
between the roof diaphragm and the wall plate. Therefore, the partial
height blocking as shown in Section 1/A3.3 and others would not work.
How will ventilation be provided through structural diaphragm blocking?
18. Attic access should be provided on the second floor. Section
3205(e). Assuming it will pierce the fire rated ceiling, a 1 hour access
door is required. Section 4304(b)6 and 4305(c)
19. Fire blocking should be provided at the floor line in Detail VA3.3
at both the floor line and also at the existing roof line. Section 2516(f)2.
Also, a vertical fire- block should be provided at the -furred wall shown
in Section9/A2.1 at every 10' measured in a horizontal line. I f the
insulation fills the space, then this will be satisfied.
20. Detail VA6.1 should be more specific as to location of the first
braces. How often they are spaced, separation from two walls, exact
size of the vertical brace, etc.
21. 1 am not sure how the existing first story corridor was justified
as it appears to be a dead-end to me. Section 3304(d)
22. Also, I am not sure how two exits are provided out of the existing
first story. Section 3303(a,c)
23. The pharmacy has to be separated from the corridor and entry
by corridor construction protection. Section 3305(g,h)
24. The doors 1004 to the existing director's office are shown as
unprotected glass on Sheet A2.3. At least 20 minute smoke doors are
required. Likewise, the windows from the offices have to be protected.
25. Safety glazing is shown in some smoke doors unless this is allowed
by the listing, wired glass should be used.
26. The existing corridor on the second floor should be protected
to Section 3305 standards.
27. The hallway system 21104, 2R22, and 21127 serves more than

leads me to believe that the ceiling is being used as a return air plenum.
This would violate section 1002(a), second paragraph in the area of the
corridor at the very least.
7. A fire damper should be provided where the 8 x 6 duct pierces the
corridor wall of waiting room 2QO9 near the lab.
8. The method of providing condensate control should be shown. Section
510 and 1205, UMC. It shouldn't spill on to the roof as this will prematurely
deteriorate the roofing.

STRUCTURAL
1. Quality control (some of these should be noted on the plans):
a. Special inspection is required for the pile installation, grade beams,
and for the soils work. Section 306(a). You should approve
of the owner hired/paid individuals. Section 306(b,c).
b. The notes on sheet S1.0 mention field welding and masonry for
special inspection. Actually, I can't find that on the plans in
which case the notes should be modified.
c. There will be shop fabricated and welded structural steel items
which should be under continuous inspection or in a plant with
third party quality control you approve of. Section 306(f) .
d. The welders should be certified by third party testing agencies
such as those licensed by the Washington Association of Building
Officials (WABO).
e. The pressure treated lumber should be branded by an agency such
as the American Wood Preservers Institute. Section 2505.
f. The roof trusses should be manufactured in plants you approve
of also with third party quality control agencies. Section 2510 (f)

15. The engineer took the total length of shear walls available and divided
it into the earthquake force. First of all he used some wall panels which
exceed the aspect ratios in table 25-1 ' . . But more importantly the force
to the walls should be based on the tributary force since they connect
to a flexible diaphragm. . A redesign is necessary for the interior walls.
16. The earthquake force should include the mechanical equipment loads
especially those on the roof. Section 2312(e)l.
17. There is no means shown of connecting the roof diaphragm to the
shear walls/drag struts in details A, B and E/S6.0 as well as the Mansard
truss elevation. Section 2513 (a) .
18. How are interior shear walls connected to the roof diaphragm?
19. Drag. struts should be developed over openings aiid their connections
to shear walls should be shown. Section 2312(h)2F. Chord forces may
control for east and west directions.
20. How are the lateral forces transfered around the mansards? This
diaphragm discontinuity also makes it difficult to transfer chord forces.
How will it be done?
21. How are chord forces dragged around the reentrant corners at the
entry on both the top and floor?

Dear Mr. Bray:
Per our telephone conversation on October 19, 1990, this is a summary of
our response to the City Review letters dated October 10, 1990 and October
51 1990 regarding Kruger Clinic.
Comments from ICBO letter dated October 10, 1990
Mechanical Comments:
1. Shaft Enclosure: The shaft is shown in detail on the Architectural
drawing. Also we will indicate shaft walls on our detail 1/14-5.
2. Minimum Outside Air Setting: We will add a note to the Fan Schedules
which will read "minimum outside air setting shall be 3500 cfm, or 1/3
outside air".
3. A reference to the SMIFLA and PPIC "Guidelines for Seismic Restraints
of Mechanical Systems and Plumbing Piping Systems" will be included in
paragraph 1.2.1 of section 15200 of the project specification. Dick
Mumma, Edmonds Building Official agreed that this addition to the
specification would meet the seismic bracing requirements in lieu of
including seismic bracing details in the drawings. See attached
letter of telephone conversation with Dick Mumma, City of Edmonds
Building Official.
4. Wall Fire Dampers: The corridors are protected by fire dampers as
shown on drawings.
5. Pharmacy Fire Separation: The pharmacy is separated from the lobby,
by a roll up fire door and fire dampers in ductwork as indicated on
drawings.
6. Corridor Air System: The arrows in question are there to show
building pressurization only. They are not indicating supply or
exhaust grilles. The corridor is not used as a plenum and is being
separated from the rest of the building by fire dampers.

7. Duct Fire Damper: This duct does not provide any direct access into
the corridor. So a fire damper is not required per NFPA Section 90A.
8. Condensate Drain: A drain line from the units to the roof drainy will
be shown on drawings.
9. Flexible Ducting: Paragraph 2.1.1.5 of the specification will be
revised to require the use of Thermaflex, G-KM flexible ducting. This
ducting is listed under UL Standard 181. UMC Standard 10-1 is based
on UL Standards 181 and 214. The manufacturer of Thermaflex stated
that the testing performed under UL 181 is more severe than that for
UL 214, and that UL 214 does not apply to flexible ducting (per Bob
Hollister, 284-1476). Therefore, the flexible ducting used for Kruger
Clinic meets the requirements of UMC Standard 10-1.
10. Wall Fire Damper Detail: A fire damper detail will be included on
Sheet M-1 of the drawing set.
11. Smoke Control: This is defined in Specification Section 15970, 3.7.6,
Smoke Mode Control, see attached specification page.

Dear Mr. Mumma:
Following is my understanding of our telephone discussion concerning the
ICBO requirement to show exact seismic bracing details on the Kruger Clinic
drawings.
Mechanical Item #3 of the October 10, 1990 review letter for Kruger Clinic
from Jerry Barbera (ICBO) stated that exact seismic bracing details for
mechanical equipment and distribution must be included in the Kruger Clinic
drawing set. I contacted you to determine the acceptability of referencing
the S`MIFLA and PPIC "Guideliaes for- Seismic Restraints of Mechanical
Systems and Plumbing Piping Systems" in the project specification, in lieu
of providing exact details on the drawings. The "seismic guidelines"
outline what mechanical distribution and equipment needs to be seismically
restrained and gives standard seismic bracing and support details for the
equipment and distribution. Per our conversation, i't is my understanding
that inclusion of a requirement to meet these standard seismic guidelines
into the specification would be an acceptable way to meet the requirement
stated in the ICBO letter.
We will proceed with the project including a reference to the seismic
guidelines, but not including seismic bracing details an the drawings, as
previously stated. If you have any questions or comments regarding this
subject, please contact me immediately. Thank you for your attention.

drifting are generally very short spans. Where longer
spans are encountered only a portion of the span is
loaded by drifting.
7. A sketch has been added to J/S5.O which specifies full
penetration bevel welds all around.
8. The tube, though sloped, is welded at the top to act as
a beam rather than an arch. The only force at the joint
is direct vertical bearing. The base plate is extended
to provide space fora nominal lag bolt. connection. The
detail has not been changed.

15. This item has been discussed with Jerry Barbera,
Regional Manager of ICBO. This building has plywood
shear walls well distributed throughout the area of the
building. The large depth of the diaphragm compared to
the short spans between the shear walls results in a
system that is more like a rigid diaphragm than a
flexible diaphragm. That is, the walls will tend to
deflect the same and carry the same shear stress per
unit length. Distributing the forces to the walls on a
tributary basis would result in a few of the walls
apparently being more highly stressed than other nearby
walls. Conversely, other walls would apparently be
carrying less load than they realistically will be
subjected to, considering the rigidity of the
diaphragm. The average shear forces in the walls were
increased 10% to account for accidental torsion. The
plywood nailing selected provided a minimum of 20%
excess capacity compared to the design stresses. The
south exterior wall at both levels would be subject to
considerably more load using a tributary analysis method
and the lack of nearby parallel walls made it
appropriate to design it by tributary analysis. This
resulted in increased nailing at this wall at the lower
level in accordance with note #2 on S2.0.
The walls which exceed the allowable aspect ratios are
exterior walls adjacent to high window openings. The

aspect ratio of the portion of the wall between the
windows is approximately 1 to 1, which is well within
the allowables. However, we recalculated the wall
stresses without considering the short walls, and found
that the wall nailing called for on the plans is still
adequate. We believe that, for this building, this
combined analysis is more realistic than an analysis
based exclusively on an assumed flexible diaphragm and
tributary distribution of loads.
16. The roof top mechanical units weigh a total of 10,000#.
When distributed over the entire roof area this amounts
to I psf. The 20 psf roof dead load used in the lateral

A fire inspection on February 20th, 1986, revealed
that several tenants were using blocks to keep
business doors open during regular working hours.
The use of this type of device to obstruct the
door is a violation of Section 12.104 (e) of the
1982 Uniform Fire Code.
The approved plans require self -closing rated
doors to be installed. The owner must provide
magnetic hold-open.devices for all doors that desire
to remain in the open position. Please contact
Gary McComas, Fire Marshall, to inspect these
devices once they have been installed.

After review, the fire department has the following requirements:
1. Fire hydrants will be required on site and shall be
provided on a loop system. One hydrant should be
installed at the southwest corner of the western
most building. The second hydrant should be located
near the southeast corner of the eastern most build-
ing. Minimum gallon available is 3,900 gallon per
minute at 20 psi. U.F.C. 10.301, E.C.C..19.75.150.
2. Six 2,A-10,B:C fire extinguishers are required for
the first floor of the building. One 2,A-10,B:C
fire extinguisher is required for the basement
storage area. N.F.P.A. 10.
I am also utilizing.the I.C.B.O. plan review letter dated May 22,
1985. Since all parties involved have access to this review, I
will not elaborate on it's conclusions.

Data and plans for the above project have been reviewed for con-
formance with the Uniform Building Code and some parts of the
Mechanical Code as well as Washington State Regulations for
Energy and Barrier Free Design. They have not been reviewed for
compliance with requirements of federal, or other state and local
regulatory agencies. Most of the following comments should be
reflected as changes and notes on the plans and in the specifica-
tions.
SITE PLAN AND GENERAL COMMENTS
I- Your Public Works Department should review the plans for drain -
.age, street improvements, sewerage connections, etc. and your
Fire Department should review them for circulation around the
storage area portion of the building, onsite fire hydrants and
fire extinguishers, etc. Section 302(c) and Article 10 UFC

2. The cut slopes at the west and south property lines appear to
be steeper than 2:1 which should be justified by a soils report.
Section 2903(a). The top of the slope should be held back from
the property line with respect to a distance "b" as outlined in
Table 70-C, pages 735 & 736, and the slopes should be protected
against erosion.

3. The roof drains on the north side of the building should drain underground
to discharge into the street or a storm drainage system. section 3207(e)
4. A fence should be provided on 216th Street for pedestrian protection.
Chapter 44
5. Disabled persons requirements:
a. Three Handicapped parking spaces, not the 2 shown on Sheet A-2 are
required. Section 7503(a)l
b. The details of curb cuts, signs, the drop off area, etc. should be
shown on the plans. A note such as shown on'Sheet A-2 is not adequate.
c. A sign with the international symbol of access and showi . ng the location
of the parking spaces and main entrance off of 216th Street should be
shown on the plan on Sheet A-2. The international symbol of access
should also be posted at the front door.
6. Please notify us of the value at your earliest convenience.
NONSTRUCTURAL COMMENTS
am concerned that this building is actually a Group I-1 occupancy --"hos-
pitals..., and similar buildings (each accommodating more than 5 persons')."
Section 1001. There are 5 "procedure" rooms in this building which the archi-
tect informs me are actually operating rooms and the total occupant load from
all of these rooms is 10.7 persons. Item 10, Table 33-A. In addition, the
corridors are 8' wide and there are surgeon scrub sinks. But the plumbing
plans do not seem to show any anesthetize gases entering the rooms. However,
if the patients in these rooms are to be drugged or otherwise anesthesized,
such that they can not escape in an emergency on their own you would have to
classify it as an I -I occupancy and many additional comments would be forth-
coming in that case.
2. Assuming the B-2 occupancy classification is correct, two adjacent clear
60' yards are required to justify the area of this building. But three 60'
ones.will be required when the expansion is provided. Section 506. This
information should be kept in your permanent files for future reference.
Section 506
3. The floors and walls in the toilet rooms 106, 116, 123, 146,t156, 170, 191,
195, 210, and 255 are proposed to be sheet vinyl. You should decide if this
equivalent to ceramic tile that is required by Section 510(b) and if you do
the vinyl will have to be a smooth surface. The showers should also have
ceramic tile or equivalent.

4. Exi ts:
a. The west elevation view does not seem to show a ramp to the main
entrance door landing nor is it clear on the site or grading plans.
Since Section 3301(e) requires this, it should be provided.
b. The doors are to be openable from the inside without the use of
key, special knowledge or effort. Section 3304(c). Many of the
interior doors such as 108, 122, 149, 160, etc. use doubled key
lock dead bolts which would violate this --the exception to that
Section only applies to exterior exit doors 101, 122, and 164
(and the required signs and indicator for them should be noted on
the plans). A redesign of the interior hardware appears to be in
order.
c - The corridor doors which are Type C should be listed and have been
tested with the glazing indicated and should be factory installed.
d. All 20 minute smoke and draft control corridor doors should have
gasketing detail for the sides and top. Section 3305(h)l. The
jambs for these doors shown in Detail I/A-7 should be listed ones.
e. The wired glass in the corridor windows should be held in with steel
frames not clips as shown in Detail 4/A-7. Section 3305(h)2
f. Exit signs should be provided in the corridor system where necessary
to indicate the location of exits. Section 3314
g. The rise and run of handrail details should be shown for the exterior
stairway from Door 121.
5. Type V-1 hour construction throughout:
a. The siding on the plywood shown on Details in Sheets A-3 and A-18 is
not adequate. Item 75, Table 43-B provides an acceptable alternative
but the details should be shown. Note that both sides of the wall
Detail A/A-3 needs to be protected as Footnote 15, Table 43-C, only
applies to the ceiling. Individual posts should be protected separately
--"heavy timber" is not equivalent to 1 hour, see Evaluation Report
NRB 250.
b. The balconies and overhangs do not have to be protected -but the wall
portions shown extending through the floor sheathing should be completely
protected. Table 17-A, Section 1710 and 4304(c)

c. The 1 hour protection should be provided on the wall portions between
the flat and pitched roof in Detail 2/A-18.
d . The suspended "l hour accoustical tile" ceiling specified is a misnomer.
The enti re f 1 oor/cei I i ng assembly has to be 1 i sted for I hour and the
designer should specify the manufacturer and type of ceiling and provide
justification that the listing for it is exactly for the floor and
ceiling joist systems including their spacings shown on the plans.
e. The roof rafters and ceiling joists shown in Detail 3/A-17 are spaced
2' o.c. which would not comply with Item 25, Table 43-C nor the Fire
Resistance Design Manual by the Gypsum Association. Justification
should be provided.
f. Assuming that the suspended ceilings are justified, there are numerous
penetrations which require protection. The devices to provide this
should be listed and justified. Section 4305(b). Note that most
devices still have a limit to the total number of penetrations which
will be checked when the justification is provided.
g. The space above the suspended ceiling cannot be used for return air
unless the corridors are partitioned off from it. Section 706(b)
6. Attic and floor spaces:
a. The total roof/ceiling assembly and the floor/ceiling assemblies
over the basement have to be draft stopped. Section 2516(f)4.
The location and details of them should be shown.
b. Firestopping is required in the staggered stud walls, in the ".shaft area"
between the wa-iting room and the stairway shown in Detail C/A-17, where
interior'walls extend above the ceiling without wallboard, etc. Section
2516(f)i
c. The location and size of the underfloor access should be detailed on
Sheet A-3 and the"tize of the well should be large enough to provide
workers access therein. There should access to each of the 3 partitioned
areas.
d. The number of crawl space vents should be given on Sheet A-3 so that the
required net clear ventilation area can be verified to be provided.
Section 2'�-16(c)6. How does the middle area get cross ventilation?
e. Similarly, the roof system ventilation should be specified and justified.
Separate systems may be required between draft stops. Section 3205(c)

f. The posts such as shown in Section C/A-18 should be treated material.
Section 2516(c)7. Also, the bottom of the siding should be shown to
be 6" above grade.
g. The "waterproof membrane" mentioned in Section B/A-18 should be desig-
nated and proven to be such. Section 1707(c) and 2516(c)8
7. The roof:
a. The flat portion of the roof should be covered with a Class A or B
listed type of roofing. Section 3203(e). The gage of the metal roof
should be given. Section 3203(c)3
b. Details of the skylight should be provided so that compl.iance.!with Chaptei
34, 52 and/or 54 can be checked.
c. The overflow drains should be shown 2" above the adjacent roof drains.
Section 3207(c)
8. The glazing in door types A and B, and glazing within 12" of any exterior
door are subject to human impact. Section 5406. As such, they have to be
listed impact type --not just tempered. Section 5402. These required panels
should be identified on the plans.
9. Mechanical items:
a. The mechanical plan should be submitted for review.
b. Any water heater over 4' high should be strapped down.
c. The heat loss for the building should be shown to be less than that
required by the Energy Code, Chapter 4. Hot water spigots should be
limited to 112 gallon per minute when not required for safety reasons
such as in toilet rooms. Provisions to limit infiltration should be
shown. Slab insulation should be shown on Details A/A-3, and B/A-18.
10. Locksets and latchsets should be lever operated or equivalent. Tactile
and visible signs should be provided at Handicapped accessible toilet rooms
and the stairway. Chapters 53 and 55 Disabled Persons Amendments. The drink-
.ing fountains should have upfront controls.
STRUCTURAL COMMENTS
1. Structural notes, Sheet A-9, and quality control:

a. You should verify that this building is within an Exposure B area.
Section 2311(c). If it is in an "urban" location with open streets

around it and few, if any, trees or buildings surrounding it, it is
actually in an Exposure C condition.
b. The wood bearing on masonry or concrete should be specified as pressure
treated. Section 2516(c)6. You should look for the quality control
mark of an agency such as the American Wood Preservers Institute—
Evaluation Report AA 517. Section 2505
c. The structural steel, glu-lam beams, and trusses will be manufactured
offsite. You should approve the plants in which they are made under
the quality control criteria of Section 306(f). Note that a certifi-
cate of fabrication and quality control marks on the products are
required.
d. The welders should be certified by third party quality control agencies
such as those licensed by.WABO.
2. The trusses should be designed by a Washington State registered engineer
and we would recommend that you have this project engineer examine these plans
and indicate his review in writing. This would insure that some coordination
between the 2 sets is provided.
3. Horizontal framing:
a. The roof hip beams are 3-1/8" x 12" on Sheet A-4 but the calculation
sheet 2 calls for 3-1/8 x 15.
b. The size of the header to the west of dispensing room 231.supporting
the 2 x 12 rafters should be shown on Sheet A-4.
c. The floor framing should be designed to take a 20 lb psf partition dead
load instead of the 10 lb psf shown on Sheet 3 of the calculations.
Section 2304(d)
d. The 2 x 12 floor joists especially the ones spaced 16" o.c. appear
overstressed under the reqOired 2000 lb concentrated load
(on a 30" square basis).for the longer spans and should be redesigned.
Section 2304(c). Note that the dead load including the 20 lb psf
partition load has to be included.
e. The supports of the 5-1/8" GLB's and five 2 x 12's in the stud walls
should be detailed on Sheet A-3. If the posts rest on tihe 3 x 6
plates, compression perpendicular to grain should be investigated.
f. The KD blocks shown in connection Detail 2/A-4 should be checked for
compression perpendicular to grain.

4. Foundation system:
a. The bearing value used in the foundation design should be justified
by a soil report or visual classification by a soils engineer with
the use of Table 29-B. Section 2905
b. The footings shown on Section A/A_3 and C/A-18 should be 6" below
grade unless the soil report states otherwise. Table 29-A, Footnote
2 and Section 2907(a)
c. The unreinforced wall shown in Section B/A�-3 should not be backfilled
until the roof framing load is added to it.
d. The retaining wall shown in Section C/A-3 should be justified by
calculation.
e. The maximum height of the retaining wall on Detail 2/A-18 should be
given.
5. Lateral resistance:
a. The lateral design for this building should be submitted.
b. Boundary nailing should be detailed around the skylights.
c. How does the lateral load transfer from the trusses to the exterior
shear walls at the entry, Section D/A-17?
d. How does the lateral load transfer from the sloping to the flat portions
of the roof shown in Detail 3/A-17? Also, between the peak of the
trusses and the flat roof, C/A-18?
e. Full height blocking should be shown between the sheathing over the
trusses and the exterior walls or headers, Sheet A-18.
f. Drag struts at the roof line appear to be required over the interior
north -south shear walls at the corridors. The nailing of the bottom
plate for the upper floor shear walls should be designated on the plans.
Drag struts also appear to be required at the footing level to pull
the forces into the wall at Section A/A-3.

Department, inspected your business at 21606 Highway 99 on November 21,
1969, at which time you were presented a FireDepartment Notice of Fire

BRK's Model 1800 Detector has been designed to meet the demanding per-
formance requirements of UL 268. Among the most significant differences
between this standard and those that it replaces (1677) and (168), is the addi-
tion of a slow smoldering fire test. The conventional (bipolar) ionization type
smoke detector, while extremely responsive to the fast I laming fires, is slug-
gish in responding to slow smoldering fires, and therefore to meet UL 268,
must be set to a more sensitive level than previously required (see fig. 1).
BRK's 1800 Detector features a field -proven UNIPOLAR sensing chamber,
which responds uniformly to the broad range of fire tests required by UL 268
(see page 2 for detailed information on unipolar technology).
When set to the same sensitivity, the 1800's unipolar chamber is approxi-
mately 2 times more sensitive to smoke than conventional bipolar chambers
with comparable smoke entry characteristics. Therefore it can be set to a lower
sensitivity than bipolar detectors, and further from the threshold of alarm (1 .5%
nominal) and still will alarm at the levels of smoke required by this demanding
standard.. In order to pass these requirements most competitive units are
commonly set below 1% sensitivity, and therefore may be more susceptible
to nuisance alarms.
The Model 1800 system type products of combustion detec-
tors.are designed for use with two -wire UL Listed control
panels. Drawing less than 100 microamps during normal
operation, the detectors can operate over a broad voltage
range of 10 to 29 VDC. The dual chamber unipolar ioniza-
tion sensor detects both visible and invisible smoke. The
sensitivity of the 1800 is preset at the factory and does not
require adjustment in the field. A solid state voltage regu-
lator maintains detector sensitivity over a wide range of input
voltages. A visual indication of an alarm is given by an LED
on the detector cover. The visible alarm signal may be

Assembly. Incorporated within the detector is a sensitivity
test switch which makes troubleshooting easy without
sophisticated test equipment. Field wiring connects to easy -
to -wire terminals, simplifying installation. Easy to install,
clean and maintain, this detector is designed for direct sur-
face mounting (mounting bracket included), or mounting to
a 411 octagon or smaller box. For installation and mainte-

tors" for location and placement of the detectors.

BRK's proven unipolar ionization chamber
Stable response to a broader range of fires!
A unipolar dual chamber ionization sensor
is more sensitive to slow smoldering fires
than a conventional bipolar sensor and yet
is less susceptible to nuisance alarms. Like
a bipolar sensor, a unipolar sensor is able
to detect a change in the chamber ion cur-
rent caused by the presence of combustion
particles. These particles act as recombina-
tion centers, increase resistance across the
chamber and reduce current flow (see figure
2). Unlike a bipolar sensor, a unipolar sensor
(see figure 3) accentuates the increase in
resistance by speeding the rate of ion recom-
bination. The recombination rate is speeded
because the unipolar field, weakens the bi-
polar allowing for easier ion recombination.
(See figure 3). Tests have shown that uni-
polar sensors are approximately twice as
sensitive as bipolar chambers in terms of
chamber signal change to increasing levels 0
of smoke (see figure 4).
Furthermore, because its response is not
significantly affected by size or number of
smoke particles, the unipolar's response
does not decrease in a slow smoldering fire
as much as a bipolar detector. Thus, its sen-
sitivity does not have to be increased (moved
closer to the threshold of alarm) to pass
UL 268's smoldering fire test.

The No. 868 is a 12 volt, 2-
wire Class B single zone Fire
Alarm Panel. A unique track built
into the unit allows easy plug-in
of a 3-zone expansion card (No.
869) which permits expansion of
up to four separate lock -in zones.
Alarm and trouble LEDs are pro-
vided for each zone. Each zone
also contains independent disable
switches and re -sound by zone
(non -disabled zones can cause
additional alarms).
Upon activation of a compatible
2-wire detector or any normally
open fire alarm initiating device,
the No. 868 will automatically
cause audible devices to sound,
trip a municipal box, notify a
remote station, annunciate the
fire zone and energize sup-
plementary relays.
The No. 868 employs both snap -
in master and zone expander
boards for quick zone expansion
and replacement. The removable

cabinet door makes installation
easy. The unit contains a Class
B detection circuit for powering
two wire, 12 volt photoelectric
(e.g. 634, 634T, 646-12 and 647-12)
or ionization detectors (e.g. 627H).
A maximum of 30 detectors may
be handled per zone, or 120
detectors per control. Two Class
B signaling circuits are also built
in, permitting use of 12 volt pol-
arized bells or horns (see "Pol-
arized Fire Signaling Devices").
Each circuit handles 2 amps with
a maximum total circuit current
of 3 amps. Remote Zone Annun-
ciation can be obtained with the
optional No. 870 that will annun-
ciate 4 zones of alarm. System
trouble indication LED, trouble
sonalert and silence switch are
built into a stainless steel face
plate. The No. 871 relay provides
a form C dry contact output for
trouble conditions.
The No. 868s solid state design
is completely supervised for low
battery, grounds, opens and bell
loop shorts. Standby power is pro-
vided by a 12V, 5 amp-hr. sealed
lead acid rechargeable battery
(No. 630) which is maintained by
an integral battery charger. The
entire unit is UL and California
Fire Marshal Listed, and meets all
NFPA 72A, B, C and D require-
ments. The No. 868 is packed
in an attractive cabinet and is
ideal for commercial, industrial
and institutional applications.

The Nos. 632H and 627H Smoke
Detectors have been designed to
meet the demanding performance
requirements of UL!s new standard
268. Among the most significant dif-
ferences between this standard and
those that it replaces, (167 and 168)
is the addition of a slow smoldering
fire test.
The unipolar sensing chamber re-
sponds uniformly to all the fire tests
required by UL26& When set to the
same sensitivity, the unipolar cham-
ber is approximately two times more
sensitive to smoke than conventional
bipolar chambers with comparable
smoke entry characteristics. The
632H and 627H Smoke Detectors are
set at a lower sensitivity than bipolar
detectors and further from the thresh-
old of alarm (1.5% nominal) and still
go into alarm when they sense the
level of smoke required by UL268.
The 632H Series and 6Z7H Series
are system type products of combus-
tion detectors designed for use with
two wire (No. 627H) and four/six wire
(No. 632H) UL Listed fire control
panels. These detectors draw less
than 100 microamps during normal
operation. The dual chamber unipolar
ionization sensor detects both visible

and invisible smoke. Sensitivity is
preset at the factory and does not re-
quire adjustment in the field. A solid
state voltage regulator maintains de-
tector sensitivity over a wide range of
input voltages. A visual indication of
an alarm is given by an LED on the
detector cover. Incorporated within the
detector is a sensitivity test switch for
troubleshooting without test equip-
ment * Field wiring connects to easy -
to -wire terminals, simplifying instal-
lation. These detectors are designed
for direct surface mounting (mounting
bracket included), or mounting to a
4" octagon or smaller box.

temperature thermostats
Thermostats are used to detect the presence of excessive heat and are therefore slower to react to fires than smoke
detectors. Generally used in addition to smoke detectors in fire alarm systems, thermostats are not a substitute for
smoke detectors. In residential applications, thermostats are usually ceiling mounted in each room, garage, attic,
boiler room, storage area, etc. Use this chart to select the Thermostat which is correct for your application.

tion Rate-of-Rise/Fixed Temperature
Thermostats are UL Listed for protec-
ting spaces of 50' x 50' (or 2500 square
feet) —and FM approved for protecting
spaces of 30' x 30' (900 square feet).
They will initiate an alarm signal when
a fixed temperature is reached: 1350 for
the No. 501, 1900 for the No. 501A. In
addition, since many fires grow rapidly
in intensity, resulting in fast rising tem-
peratures, the No. 501 and No. 501A are
designed to sense and respond to any
increase in temperature which is ab-
normally fast.
Rate -of -Rise Thermostats should not be
tested with a match since this will neces-
sitate replacing the unit. When tripped by
rapid temperature increases, these ther-
mostats will reset themselves as long as
the fixed setting has not been reached.
The Nos. 502, 503, 504 and 505 Ther-
mostats are compact and attractive. The
streamlined design is extremely effi-

Thermostats project a mere 1-30' from
the ceiling. Their smooth, pleasing con-
tours and all -white finish make them at-
tractive in any setting.
The thermostats feature a field -proven
pneumatic rate -of -rise element and a
fixed temperature element with a special
fusible alloy unsurpassed for long term
stability and reliability. They also incor-
porate an external heat collector that
drops away when the alloy fuses, pro-
viding unmistakable visual indication
cient, resulting in fast response to fire.
The four terminals provided on each ther-
mostat make parallel wiring simple
since no more than one wire is fastened
to any terminal post. The gold flashed
electrical contacts are completely en-
closed, preventing malfunction from dust
and moisture in the air The 1350 ther-
mostats are ideal for normal room use. Use
the 1900 thermostats where ambient
temperatures exceed 1000F, such as in
attics, boiler rooms and hot kitchens.
Note: The No. 503 and No. 505 Thermo-
stats are "normally closed" and are rec-
ommended only for special circuits. To
use thermostats on burglar alarm sys-
tems, we recommend No. 502 and No.
504 thermostats wired across the protec-
tive circuit to provide a closure upon ac-
tivation.

Ademco No. 452 Waterflow Switches
are designed to be used in conjunction
with fire alarm systems to supervise the
flow of water in sprinkler pipes. When a
sprinkler head opens and water flows, the
switch contacts on the No. 452 close.
To compensate for surges in the water
lines, the No. 452 has a pneumatic, ad-
justable retard mechanism. This allows for
a delay from 0 to 90 seconds between
the time water starts to flow and the time
that the switch activates. If the water flow
is only a temporary surge, and stops
before the delay time is completed, the
switch will recycle automatically and be
ready to report a subsequent surge or
alarm.
To install the No. 452 Switch, only a 2"
hole in the sprinkler pipe is needed. The
paddle rolls up and can be inserted into
this hole. The switch is then fastened to
the pipe by a U-boft. Switches are avail-
able with saddles for numerous pipe
sizes from 4" diameter to 8" diameter
pipe.
100% testing of each switch is conducted
at greatly elevated pressures to make
certain that leaks will not develop. The
paddle is made of a special polyethylene
material which is designed to withstand
almost any chemical or mineral element
in water. It is vastly superior to the Monel
paddles that have previously been avail-
able. (The No. 452 cannot be used in
"dry" systems).

The No. 532 Manual Pull Station is
noncoded, features a dual action me-
chanism and is operable with a phenolic
break rod. Its unique "dual action"
design resists false activation. Operator
must push in door and pull down handle
to activate. Reset then is only possible
with a special tool supplied. Constructed
pull
of tough Lexan, the pull station meets all
requirements for professional application.
Also available are the No. 532-1 back
box and No. 532-9 replacement break
rods (12 per pkg.) for the No. 532.
The No. 862 Stopper 11 Fire Alarm Pull
Station Protector is a UL Listed clear
Lexan shield that fits over the Nos. 532,
529 and most other manual pull stations.
The unit is a tampered protective cover
which will produce a loud, local pre -alarm
warning signal when the shield is lifted.
It is believed that this pre -alarm warning
signal will deter false alarms. The battery -
powered horn can be silenced on the No.
862 by merely closing the Lexan shield.
The No. 862 can be used with both a
flush or surface mounted pull station. The
No. 862-1 Spacer may be required for
surface mount pull stations.

No. 529 Manual Pull Station, a pleas-
ingly designed plastic case insures a
lifetime of dependable operation from the
No. 529. An inexpensive, easily replaced
fiber disc breaks when the pull station is
operated. THIS ELIMINATES ALL DAN-
GER FROM BROKEN GLASS! Once op-
erated, it can be reset only by an author-
ized person.
Installation is quick and simple. The pull
station may be flush mounted to any
standard electrical box of surface mount-
ed using an Ademco No. 44 Aluminum
Box.
