I visited as well - it's the first time I have seen it since the demolition was done. I was pretty shocked by the extent of construction that is not close to what was documented on the drawings. I can imagine that this less-tha n-com pliant construction extends throughout the original half of the building. I am going to the project OAC meeting tomorrow and will address with the owner, tenant, and contractor the extent to which the construction does not match what was directed by the original documents. I am sure the question will be "What are we going to need to do, to continue on with the project?" And I will tell them that we need to come to some kind of agreement with the building department as they are charged with the public safety. We have discussed the difficulty of trying to make everything conform to what would be a Type V-1HR building in 1985 or in 2015, as the original building would need to be renovated from top to bottom. I don't know if you have any idea about what would be acceptable to you. I have a notion that encasing all the new and existing construction within our space with 5/8" type X gypsum board, all the way up to but not including the joists would give us a level of fire -protection that is FAR beyond what is currently in place, and thus would be an improvement in safety. We would use fire -rated ceilings as currently detailed. I imagine the client may choke on an expense like this which is far beyond what anyone expected to spend - but no one expected to find a building in this kind of shape. But I don't think anything less than this could give you any sense that the project is similar to 1-HR construction. if you think that something less or different is a sufficient approach, please make a suggestion. There are 5 of these fire hoses in the common areas and I'm looking at 3 options and am obtaining pricing: 1. Remove hose and cap, leave the cabinet and place a fire extinguisher in there 2. Remove hose and cap, remove the cabinet and drywall 3. Leave in place and have serviced In the Swedish tenant improvement space there is one fire hose, I believe the route they will be going is to have Andersen Construction decommission the cabinet and drywall over the hole. Class II Standpipes Ref: 21600 Highway 99 Erika Haven is property manager for Health Care Realty. Kyle Anderson is project super for Wound Care tenant improvement. Kyle: Thanks for the question about decommissioning the standpipe cabinets in the project area. I reviewed the Kruger address file at the fire department. The original requirements for the Kruger Clinic included a class 11 standpipe installation required by UBC (1988) Table 38-A for the purpose of group 132 occupancy (office) greater than 20,000 s.f. per floor (actual measure for Kruger was 45,000 s.f. across both floors). A class 11 standpipe consists of 100' hose hand lines in cabinets covering all portions of the building are within 30' of a nozzle. The hoses require periodic pressure testing, drying, and re -hanging. I have no records that has been accomplished. The fire marshal at the time of construction suggested a class III arrangement that would also provide a function for responding firefighters. The suggestion was not taken. His comment was that a class 11 standpipe is intended for occupant use only, much like a fire brigade, or organized response private response team. At this date, I know no such group and with Snohomish County FD#1 now serving your fire emergency needs and alternative features for use by private persons, an organized brigade is neither necessary nor recommended. My suggestion to you is remove the hose hand lines, decommission and cap the water connections, and know that you have fire extinguishers for private use where needed for a fire emergency. Kruger Clinic also has an automatic fire alarm system monitoring the corridors on both levels. Stevens (now Swedish) hospital was given the same approval about 1S years ago to remove their hose hand lines from service in the hospital tower. I would like Erika's approval for Kyle to remove standpipes in TI area, and Erika's assistance to decommission those in the rest of the building. It detects both smoldering and flaming fires. It fits a variety of detector bases permit- ting connection to 2 or 4 wire initiating loops. Sensitivity may be checked with a 70898 sensitivity monitor and detector operation may be checked with a mag- netic head 70899. The 70886 includes a built-in LED which blinks app * roximately once each second to inclicait 6 tii� head is powered. This LED also lights continuously when the detec- tor is in �1��m, latching on, and remaining lit until the detector is reset. Operation The 70886 Ionization Smoke Detector has two chambers: an outer sampling chamber and an inner balance chamber. Smoke or invisible combustion gases can freely penetrate the outer chamber, but the inner chamber is virtually closed to prevent easy entry. With both chambers ionized by a single radioactive source, a very small current flows. The presence of visible smoke or invisible gases have a great influence upon the current flow in the outer chamber, causing a change in the voltage ratio between the chambers. This difference isthen amplified insidethe detector and when it becomes great enough, causes the detector to go into alarm. Application The 70886 has responsive, yet high op- erational stabilitythat gives it an extremely wide range of uses. It is best suited for use in areas where early warning of trouble from super -heated or flaming combus- tibles is expected. The detector's design allows use in a wide range of humidities, temperaturesand airvelocities. The 70886 is also constructed to be effectively used where outside RF and other electrical interference is expected to be encoun- tered. The 70886 with its 70891 or 70892 low profilebase is electrically compatible with all Gamewell initiating zone modules. Current compatible detection devices with the 70886 utilizing the same base are the 70.884 photoelectric smoke detector and the 70887,.70888, 70889 or 70890 heat detectors. Only the smoke detectors have alarm LED's. Special latching bases can be used with heat detectors to provide the alarm LED indicator. Engineer's Specification The contractor shall furnish and install where indicated on the plans, dual - chamber, ionization smoke detectors Gamewell Model 70886. The combination detector head and twist -lock base shall be UL listed compatible with a UL listed fire alarm panel. The base shall permit direct interchange with Gamewell 70884 photoelectric de- tector and with Gamewell 70887, 70888, 70889 and 70890 heat detectors. The base shall limit the alarm current available to detectors to 20mA. The smoke detector shall have a flashing status LED for visual supervision. When the detector is actuated, the flashing LED will latch on steady and at full brilliance. The detector may be reset by actuating the control panel reset switch. The sensitivity of the detector shall be capable of being measured. The vandal -resistant, security locking feature shall be used in those areas as indicated on the drawings. The locking feature shall be field removable when not required. It shall be possible to perform a functional test of the detector without the need of generating smoke. The test method shall simulate effectsof productsof combustion in the chamber to ensure testing of all detector circuits. To facilitate installation, the detector shall be non -polarized. Voltage and RF tran- sient suppression techniques shall be employed to minimize false alarm poten- tial. Auxiliary SPDT relays shall be installed where indicated. An on - site investigation of the existing buildings construction was not done. 14. The construction of the vertical shafts for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning duct work was clarified in drawings 23/A8.2 24/A8.2, 25/A8.2, and 26/A8.2. 15. In most cases, the designer should modify the plans and/or specifications to satisfy these comments. I NONSTRUCTURAL 1. You should coordinate all city approvals, especially for the increased flow into the sewer line as well as possible "industrial waste". 2. Note that sheet M-2 shows the waste line exiting near line. D and then refers you to the civil drawings. Sheet C-1.2 seems to show it going into a catch basin which, of course, wouldn't be correct. A redesign seems necessary. 3. Soils report #W-6896 by Rittenhouse- Zeman and Associates and dated June 14, 1990 complies with most of the requirements of section 2905. However, additional test or calculatiori data is required to justify the pile criteria. Section 2908(a) . Also, the method of verifying its capacity in the field should be given in an addendum. 6. Special inspection should be provided for the soil work. Section 306 (a) . This should be noted on the plans. 7. However, the architect, engineer, or soils engineer should discuss what happens with the utility lines coming into this relatively rigid building if the lines outside of the outline will sink. Also, how will this addition react relative to the existing building? 8. Three 451 wide yards are required to be kept clear -of buildings on the north, south and east sides of the entire building. Section 506 (a) 2. You should keep this information in your permanent files for future reference. Section 504(a). 9. The materials used or stored in the pharmacy should be described so that we can ensure it isn't a H-7 occupancy. Section 901 (a). 10. 1 would imagine that medical gases are used in this building. If so, the room then are in should be separated from the rest of the building by a one hour occupancy separation and should have the exterior door and ventilation requirements of section 702(b) provided. 11. All the toilet rooms should have a wall finish around the water closets which is equivalent to ceramic tile (paint on drywall is not). Section 510 (a) . You should also decide if sheet vinyl is equivalent to ceramic tile on the floors. 12. There are many references to ICBO evaluation reports or Drywall Association design numbers for fire resistance of the structural elements. This is good as far as it goes but the exact details of how double layers of drywall are to be attached and joints staggered, for instance, should be shown --all details should be on the plans --they could attach the report details to the plans if they want. 13. You should verify that the existing building was constructed to one hour construction also. 14. The construction of the vent shaft in waiting 2RO2 should be shown including the base --the mechanical plans sheet M-3 show a duct entering the side of it so the base must be below the floor system. The roof vents should be justified for a net 1 sf such as shown on Sheet A2.6--a cut sheet and/or test results should be given. Section 32059a) 16. How are the attic ventilation louvers in the existing building replaced when the new addition blocks them? 17. However, the structural plans will require a positive connection between the roof diaphragm and the wall plate. Therefore, the partial height blocking as shown in Section 1/A3.3 and others would not work. How will ventilation be provided through structural diaphragm blocking? 18. Attic access should be provided on the second floor. Section 3205(e). Assuming it will pierce the fire rated ceiling, a 1 hour access door is required. Section 4304(b)6 and 4305(c) 19. Fire blocking should be provided at the floor line in Detail VA3.3 at both the floor line and also at the existing roof line. Section 2516(f)2. Also, a vertical fire- block should be provided at the -furred wall shown in Section9/A2.1 at every 10' measured in a horizontal line. I f the insulation fills the space, then this will be satisfied. 20. Detail VA6.1 should be more specific as to location of the first braces. How often they are spaced, separation from two walls, exact size of the vertical brace, etc. 21. 1 am not sure how the existing first story corridor was justified as it appears to be a dead-end to me. Section 3304(d) 22. Also, I am not sure how two exits are provided out of the existing first story. Section 3303(a,c) 23. The pharmacy has to be separated from the corridor and entry by corridor construction protection. Section 3305(g,h) 24. The doors 1004 to the existing director's office are shown as unprotected glass on Sheet A2.3. At least 20 minute smoke doors are required. Likewise, the windows from the offices have to be protected. 25. Safety glazing is shown in some smoke doors unless this is allowed by the listing, wired glass should be used. 26. The existing corridor on the second floor should be protected to Section 3305 standards. 27. The hallway system 21104, 2R22, and 21127 serves more than 30 people and should be designed for one hour construction without dead ends. There should be a detail to show how the canopy trusses connect to the 3-TA's, Detail D/S6.0 is not specific. But how is the load shared by all three joists -- what connection is used in CIS6.0? 5. There should also be a double hip truss connection to the triple TJ I's near grid line E-1. 6. The spacing of the truss joists seem excessive under the HVAC systems. Note that drifting snow could occur against them also. 7. What does a "full moment" weld look like in detail J/S5.0? 8. The connection in I/S5.0 is pushing the -f" lag bolt perpendicular to grai n ' (Hem fir) and is also subject to twisting of the -4P plate. A redesign appears to be required. 9 . . The beam through which detail K/S5-0 cuts at door J at the director's suite should be shown on sheet S3.0. 10. The welded studs as shown -in detail F/S1.1 don't seem deep enough to resist the uplift caused by the post wind load moment. Section 2624. Comments from ICBO letter dated October 10, 1990 Mechanical Comments: 1. Shaft Enclosure: The shaft is shown in detail on the Architectural drawing. Also we will indicate shaft walls on our detail 1/14-5. 2. Minimum Outside Air Setting: We will add a note to the Fan Schedules which will read "minimum outside air setting shall be 3500 cfm, or 1/3 outside air". 3. A reference to the SMIFLA and PPIC "Guidelines for Seismic Restraints of Mechanical Systems and Plumbing Piping Systems" will be included in paragraph 1.2.1 of section 15200 of the project specification. So a fire damper is not required per NFPA Section 90A. 8. Condensate Drain: A drain line from the units to the roof drainy will be shown on drawings. 9. Flexible Ducting: Paragraph 2.1.1.5 of the specification will be revised to require the use of Thermaflex, G-KM flexible ducting. This ducting is listed under UL Standard 181. UMC Standard 10-1 is based on UL Standards 181 and 214. The manufacturer of Thermaflex stated that the testing performed under UL 181 is more severe than that for UL 214, and that UL 214 does not apply to flexible ducting (per Bob Hollister, 284-1476). Therefore, the flexible ducting used for Kruger Clinic meets the requirements of UMC Standard 10-1. 10. Wall Fire Damper Detail: A fire damper detail will be included on Sheet M-1 of the drawing set. 11. I contacted you to determine the acceptability of referencing the S`MIFLA and PPIC "Guideliaes for- Seismic Restraints of Mechanical Systems and Plumbing Piping Systems" in the project specification, in lieu of providing exact details on the drawings. The "seismic guidelines" outline what mechanical distribution and equipment needs to be seismically restrained and gives standard seismic bracing and support details for the equipment and distribution. Per our conversation, i't is my understanding that inclusion of a requirement to meet these standard seismic guidelines into the specification would be an acceptable way to meet the requirement stated in the ICBO letter. Alsof add provisional Underpinning detail and note. 12-14 Revise Section F/Sl.l. 15. This item has been discussed with Jerry Barbera, Regional Manager of ICBO. This building has plywood shear walls well distributed throughout the area of the building. The large depth of the diaphragm compared to the short spans between the shear walls results in a system that is more like a rigid diaphragm than a flexible diaphragm. That is, the walls will tend to deflect the same and carry the same shear stress per unit length. Distributing the forces to the walls on a tributary basis would result in a few of the walls apparently being more highly stressed than other nearby walls. Conversely, other walls would apparently be carrying less load than they realistically will be subjected to, considering the rigidity of the diaphragm. The average shear forces in the walls were increased 10% to account for accidental torsion. The plywood nailing selected provided a minimum of 20% excess capacity compared to the design stresses. The south exterior wall at both levels would be subject to considerably more load using a tributary analysis method and the lack of nearby parallel walls made it appropriate to design it by tributary analysis. This resulted in increased nailing at this wall at the lower level in accordance with note #2 on S2.0. The walls which exceed the allowable aspect ratios are exterior walls adjacent to high window openings. The Mr. Vaughn Bray November 7, 1990 Page Four aspect ratio of the portion of the wall between the windows is approximately 1 to 1, which is well within the allowables. However, we recalculated the wall stresses without considering the short walls, and found that the wall nailing called for on the plans is still adequate. We believe that, for this building, this combined analysis is more realistic than an analysis based exclusively on an assumed flexible diaphragm and tributary distribution of loads. 16. The roof top mechanical units weigh a total of 10,000#. When distributed over the entire roof area this amounts to I psf. The 20 psf roof dead load used in the lateral f orce calculations includes provision f or the mechanical weights. 17. A fence should be provided on 216th Street for pedestrian protection. Chapter 44 5. Disabled persons requirements: a. Three Handicapped parking spaces, not the 2 shown on Sheet A-2 are required. Section 7503(a)l b. The details of curb cuts, signs, the drop off area, etc. should be shown on the plans. A note such as shown on'Sheet A-2 is not adequate. c. A sign with the international symbol of access and showi . ng the location of the parking spaces and main entrance off of 216th Street should be shown on the plan on Sheet A-2. The international symbol of access should also be posted at the front door. 6. Please notify us of the value at your earliest convenience. NONSTRUCTURAL COMMENTS am concerned that this building is actually a Group I-1 occupancy --"hos- pitals..., and similar buildings (each accommodating more than 5 persons')." Section 1001. There are 5 "procedure" rooms in this building which the archi- tect informs me are actually operating rooms and the total occupant load from all of these rooms is 10.7 persons. Item 10, Table 33-A. In addition, the corridors are 8' wide and there are surgeon scrub sinks. But the plumbing plans do not seem to show any anesthetize gases entering the rooms. However, if the patients in these rooms are to be drugged or otherwise anesthesized, such that they can not escape in an emergency on their own you would have to classify it as an I -I occupancy and many additional comments would be forth- coming in that case. 2. Assuming the B-2 occupancy classification is correct, two adjacent clear 60' yards are required to justify the area of this building. But three 60' ones.will be required when the expansion is provided. Section 506. This information should be kept in your permanent files for future reference. Section 506 3. The floors and walls in the toilet rooms 106, 116, 123, 146,t156, 170, 191, 195, 210, and 255 are proposed to be sheet vinyl. You should decide if this equivalent to ceramic tile that is required by Section 510(b) and if you do the vinyl will have to be a smooth surface. The showers should also have ceramic tile or equivalent. Plan Check 1663 Harold Reeves May 22, 1985 Page Three 4. Exi ts: a. The west elevation view does not seem to show a ramp to the main entrance door landing nor is it clear on the site or grading plans. Since Section 3301(e) requires this, it should be provided. b. The doors are to be openable from the inside without the use of key, special knowledge or effort. Section 3304(c). Many of the interior doors such as 108, 122, 149, 160, etc. use doubled key lock dead bolts which would violate this --the exception to that Section only applies to exterior exit doors 101, 122, and 164 (and the required signs and indicator for them should be noted on the plans). A redesign of the interior hardware appears to be in order. c - The corridor doors which are Type C should be listed and have been tested with the glazing indicated and should be factory installed. d. All 20 minute smoke and draft control corridor doors should have gasketing detail for the sides and top. Section 3305(h)l. The jambs for these doors shown in Detail I/A-7 should be listed ones. e. The wired glass in the corridor windows should be held in with steel frames not clips as shown in Detail 4/A-7. Section 3305(h)2 f. Exit signs should be provided in the corridor system where necessary to indicate the location of exits. Section 3314 g. The rise and run of handrail details should be shown for the exterior stairway from Door 121. 5. Type V-1 hour construction throughout: a. The siding on the plywood shown on Details in Sheets A-3 and A-18 is not adequate. Item 75, Table 43-B provides an acceptable alternative but the details should be shown. Note that both sides of the wall Detail A/A-3 needs to be protected as Footnote 15, Table 43-C, only applies to the ceiling. Individual posts should be protected separately --"heavy timber" is not equivalent to 1 hour, see Evaluation Report NRB 250. b. The balconies and overhangs do not have to be protected -but the wall portions shown extending through the floor sheathing should be completely protected. The 1 hour protection should be provided on the wall portions between the flat and pitched roof in Detail 2/A-18. d . The suspended "l hour accoustical tile" ceiling specified is a misnomer. The enti re f 1 oor/cei I i ng assembly has to be 1 i sted for I hour and the designer should specify the manufacturer and type of ceiling and provide justification that the listing for it is exactly for the floor and ceiling joist systems including their spacings shown on the plans. e. The roof rafters and ceiling joists shown in Detail 3/A-17 are spaced 2' o.c. which would not comply with Item 25, Table 43-C nor the Fire Resistance Design Manual by the Gypsum Association. Justification should be provided. f. Assuming that the suspended ceilings are justified, there are numerous penetrations which require protection. The devices to provide this should be listed and justified. Section 4305(b). Note that most devices still have a limit to the total number of penetrations which will be checked when the justification is provided. g. The space above the suspended ceiling cannot be used for return air unless the corridors are partitioned off from it. Section 706(b) 6. Attic and floor spaces: a. The total roof/ceiling assembly and the floor/ceiling assemblies over the basement have to be draft stopped. Section 2516(f)4. The location and details of them should be shown. b. Firestopping is required in the staggered stud walls, in the ".shaft area" between the wa-iting room and the stairway shown in Detail C/A-17, where interior'walls extend above the ceiling without wallboard, etc. Section 2516(f)i c. The location and size of the underfloor access should be detailed on Sheet A-3 and the"tize of the well should be large enough to provide workers access therein. There should access to each of the 3 partitioned areas. d. The number of crawl space vents should be given on Sheet A-3 so that the required net clear ventilation area can be verified to be provided. Section 2'�-16(c)6. How does the middle area get cross ventilation? e. Similarly, the roof system ventilation should be specified and justified. Separate systems may be required between draft stops. Also, the bottom of the siding should be shown to be 6" above grade. g. The "waterproof membrane" mentioned in Section B/A-18 should be desig- nated and proven to be such. Section 1707(c) and 2516(c)8 7. The roof: a. The flat portion of the roof should be covered with a Class A or B listed type of roofing. Section 3203(e). The gage of the metal roof should be given. Section 3203(c)3 b. Details of the skylight should be provided so that compl.iance.!with Chaptei 34, 52 and/or 54 can be checked. c. The overflow drains should be shown 2" above the adjacent roof drains. Section 3207(c) 8. The glazing in door types A and B, and glazing within 12" of any exterior door are subject to human impact. Section 5406. As such, they have to be listed impact type --not just tempered. Section 5402. These required panels should be identified on the plans. 9. Mechanical items: a. The mechanical plan should be submitted for review. b. Any water heater over 4' high should be strapped down. c. The heat loss for the building should be shown to be less than that required by the Energy Code, Chapter 4. Hot water spigots should be limited to 112 gallon per minute when not required for safety reasons such as in toilet rooms. Provisions to limit infiltration should be shown. Slab insulation should be shown on Details A/A-3, and B/A-18. 10. Locksets and latchsets should be lever operated or equivalent. Tactile and visible signs should be provided at Handicapped accessible toilet rooms and the stairway. Chapters 53 and 55 Disabled Persons Amendments. The drink- .ing fountains should have upfront controls. STRUCTURAL COMMENTS 1. Structural notes, Sheet A-9, and quality control: V a. You should verify that this building is within an Exposure B area. Section 2311(c). If it is in an "urban" location with open streets Plan Check 1663 Harold Reeves May 22, 1985 Page Six around it and few, if any, trees or buildings surrounding it, it is actually in an Exposure C condition. b. The wood bearing on masonry or concrete should be specified as pressure treated. Section 2516(c)6. You should look for the quality control mark of an agency such as the American Wood Preservers Institute— Evaluation Report AA 517. Section 2505 c. The structural steel, glu-lam beams, and trusses will be manufactured offsite. You should approve the plants in which they are made under the quality control criteria of Section 306(f). Note that a certifi- cate of fabrication and quality control marks on the products are required. d. The welders should be certified by third party quality control agencies such as those licensed by.WABO. 2. The trusses should be designed by a Washington State registered engineer and we would recommend that you have this project engineer examine these plans and indicate his review in writing. This would insure that some coordination between the 2 sets is provided. 3. Horizontal framing: a. The roof hip beams are 3-1/8" x 12" on Sheet A-4 but the calculation sheet 2 calls for 3-1/8 x 15. b. The size of the header to the west of dispensing room 231.supporting the 2 x 12 rafters should be shown on Sheet A-4. c. The floor framing should be designed to take a 20 lb psf partition dead load instead of the 10 lb psf shown on Sheet 3 of the calculations. Section 2304(d) d. The 2 x 12 floor joists especially the ones spaced 16" o.c. appear overstressed under the reqOired 2000 lb concentrated load (on a 30" square basis).for the longer spans and should be redesigned. Section 2304(c). Note that the dead load including the 20 lb psf partition load has to be included. e. The supports of the 5-1/8" GLB's and five 2 x 12's in the stud walls should be detailed on Sheet A-3. If the posts rest on tihe 3 x 6 plates, compression perpendicular to grain should be investigated. f. The unreinforced wall shown in Section B/A�-3 should not be backfilled until the roof framing load is added to it. d. The retaining wall shown in Section C/A-3 should be justified by calculation. e. The maximum height of the retaining wall on Detail 2/A-18 should be given. 5. Lateral resistance: a. The lateral design for this building should be submitted. b. Boundary nailing should be detailed around the skylights. c. How does the lateral load transfer from the trusses to the exterior shear walls at the entry, Section D/A-17? d. How does the lateral load transfer from the sloping to the flat portions of the roof shown in Detail 3/A-17? Also, between the peak of the trusses and the flat roof, C/A-18? e. Full height blocking should be shown between the sheathing over the trusses and the exterior walls or headers, Sheet A-18. f. Drag struts at the roof line appear to be required over the interior north -south shear walls at the corridors. The nailing of the bottom plate for the upper floor shear walls should be designated on the plans. Drag struts also appear to be required at the footing level to pull the forces into the wall at Section A/A-3. g. How does the shear wall at this level, Section A/A-3, transfer loads into the ground under corridor 119? The slab reinforcement should be connected to the footing for the other locations. Among the most significant differences between this standard and those that it replaces (1677) and (168), is the addi- tion of a slow smoldering fire test. The conventional (bipolar) ionization type smoke detector, while extremely responsive to the fast I laming fires, is slug- gish in responding to slow smoldering fires, and therefore to meet UL 268, must be set to a more sensitive level than previously required (see fig. 1). BRK's 1800 Detector features a field -proven UNIPOLAR sensing chamber, which responds uniformly to the broad range of fire tests required by UL 268 (see page 2 for detailed information on unipolar technology). When set to the same sensitivity, the 1800's unipolar chamber is approxi- mately 2 times more sensitive to smoke than conventional bipolar chambers with comparable smoke entry characteristics. Therefore it can be set to a lower sensitivity than bipolar detectors, and further from the threshold of alarm (1 .5% nominal) and still will alarm at the levels of smoke required by this demanding standard.. In order to pass these requirements most competitive units are commonly set below 1% sensitivity, and therefore may be more susceptible to nuisance alarms. The Model 1800 system type products of combustion detec- tors.are designed for use with two -wire UL Listed control panels. Drawing less than 100 microamps during normal operation, the detectors can operate over a broad voltage range of 10 to 29 VDC. The dual chamber unipolar ioniza- tion sensor detects both visible and invisible smoke. The sensitivity of the 1800 is preset at the factory and does not require adjustment in the field. C. 7, BRK's proven unipolar ionization chamber Stable response to a broader range of fires! A unipolar dual chamber ionization sensor is more sensitive to slow smoldering fires than a conventional bipolar sensor and yet is less susceptible to nuisance alarms. Like a bipolar sensor, a unipolar sensor is able to detect a change in the chamber ion cur- rent caused by the presence of combustion particles. These particles act as recombina- tion centers, increase resistance across the chamber and reduce current flow (see figure 2). Unlike a bipolar sensor, a unipolar sensor (see figure 3) accentuates the increase in resistance by speeding the rate of ion recom- bination. The recombination rate is speeded because the unipolar field, weakens the bi- polar allowing for easier ion recombination. (See figure 3). Tests have shown that uni- polar sensors are approximately twice as sensitive as bipolar chambers in terms of chamber signal change to increasing levels 0 of smoke (see figure 4). Furthermore, because its response is not significantly affected by size or number of smoke particles, the unipolar's response does not decrease in a slow smoldering fire as much as a bipolar detector. They will initiate an alarm signal when a fixed temperature is reached: 1350 for the No. 501, 1900 for the No. 501A. In addition, since many fires grow rapidly in intensity, resulting in fast rising tem- peratures, the No. 501 and No. 501A are designed to sense and respond to any increase in temperature which is ab- normally fast. Rate -of -Rise Thermostats should not be tested with a match since this will neces- sitate replacing the unit. When tripped by rapid temperature increases, these ther- mostats will reset themselves as long as the fixed setting has not been reached. When a sprinkler head opens and water flows, the switch contacts on the No. 452 close. To compensate for surges in the water lines, the No. 452 has a pneumatic, ad- justable retard mechanism. This allows for a delay from 0 to 90 seconds between the time water starts to flow and the time that the switch activates. If the water flow is only a temporary surge, and stops before the delay time is completed, the switch will recycle automatically and be ready to report a subsequent surge or alarm. To install the No. 452 Switch, only a 2" hole in the sprinkler pipe is needed. The paddle rolls up and can be inserted into this hole. The switch is then fastened to the pipe by a U-boft. Switches are avail- able with saddles for numerous pipe sizes from 4" diameter to 8" diameter pipe. 100% testing of each switch is conducted at greatly elevated pressures to make certain that leaks will not develop. The paddle is made of a special polyethylene material which is designed to withstand almost any chemical or mineral element in water. It is vastly superior to the Monel paddles that have previously been avail- able. The No. 862 Stopper 11 Fire Alarm Pull Station Protector is a UL Listed clear Lexan shield that fits over the Nos. 532, 529 and most other manual pull stations. The unit is a tampered protective cover which will produce a loud, local pre -alarm warning signal when the shield is lifted. It is believed that this pre -alarm warning signal will deter false alarms. The battery - powered horn can be silenced on the No. 862 by merely closing the Lexan shield.
