NOTICE: This manual shall be left with the owner/user of this equipment
IMPORTANT. This detector must be tested and maintained regularly following
NFPA 72 requirements. At a minimum, cleaning should be performed annually.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Models 2W-13 and 2WT-B are 2-wip, photoelectric smoke defectors; models
4W-B and 4WT-B are 4-varm photoelectric smoke detecton. All models in-
corporate a state-of-thtear, optical sensing chamber and an advanced micro-
processor The microprocessor allows the detector to automatically adjust its
sensitivity back to the factory setting when it becomes more sensitive due to
contaminants settling in its chamber In order for this feature to work prop�
e ly, the chamber must river be opened while power is applied to the smoke
detector. This includes clearang, maintenance or screen replacement. Should
it become necessary, the screen/sen.ming chamber is field replaceable. Mod -
cis 2WT-B and 4WT-B also feature a reswrable, built-in, fixed temperature
(135-F) thermal detector and are also capable of sensing a freeze condition if
the temperature is below 41 �F.
All it Series detectors, are designed to provide open area prateefion. Two -wire
models must be used with compatible UL Listed panels only.
When used with an P Series compatible control panel or the it Series 2W-
MOD2 module (refer to installation manual 0500-46-00). the 2W-B and 2WT-B
am capable of generating a "maintenance needed" signal. The 2W-MOD2 can
indicate a need for cleaning, replacement, or a freeze condition (2WT-B only)
at the control panel or module.

After an initial power -up delay, the red and green LEDs will blink synchoo-
cously once every ten seconds. It will take approximately 80 seconds fur the
detector to finish the power -up cycle (see Table 2).

NOTE If, during pmer-up, the detector determines them is excessive electri-
cal noise in the system such as those caused by improper grounding of the
system or the conduit, both LEDs will blink far up to 4 minutes before display-
ing detector status (see Table 2).
After power -up has completed and the detector is functioning normally within
its listed sensitivity range. the green LED blinks once every five seconds. If the
detector is in need of maintenance because its sensitivity has shifted outside
the listed limits. the red LED blinks once every five seconds. When the delec-
for is in the alarm mode, the red LED latch" on. The LED indication must not
be used in lieu of the tests specified under Testing. In a freeze trouble condi-
tion, the red LED will blink once every 10 seconds (refer to Table I ) '
To measure the detector's sensitivity, the P Series Model SENS-RDR Infrared
Sensitivity Reader tool should be used. (See Figure 4.1
Models 2W-B and 2WT-B also include an output that allows an optional Model
RA 100Z Remote Annunciator to be connected.

The I' Series heads and bases are keyed so that a 2-rue head will only mount
to a 2-wim base, and a 4-wim head will only mount to a 4-wim base. The
heads and bases are clearly identified as either 2-wire or 4-wire. When mount-
ing the i' Series, ensure that the head is mounted to (he correct base.
TAMPER -RESISTANT FEATURE
The I, Series detectors include a tamper -resistant feature that prevents removal
from the mounting base without the use of a tool. To engage the tamper-re-
sistan' feature, cut the small plastic tab located on the mounting base (Figure
2). and then install the detector. To remove the defector from the base once it
has been made tamper resistant, use a small screwdriver to depress the square
tamper release tab, located on the skin of the mounting baise, and turn the
detector counterclockwise.

The screw terminals in the mounting base will accept 14-22 gauge wire. For
best system performance. all wiring should be installed in separate grounded
conduit: do not mix fire alaron system wiring in the same conduit as any other
electrical wiring. Twisted pair may be used to provide additional protection
against estranecus electrical interference.

Any 2-wire i3 smoke detector (2W-B, 2WT-B, 2WTA-B, or 2WTR-B) wired
in the Style D initiating device rimuft (IDQ configuration requires the use
of a I 'MOD2 module. This is because fire alarin control panels vary by
manufacturer on the implementation of Style D circuits. Therefore. the only
way to insure proper operation of 2-wire I' smoke demetars (2W-B, 21WT-B,
2WTA-B, or 2WTR-B) on Style D IDC's is to use a 2W-MOD2 module. Refer to
the 2W-MOD2 installation manual, document D500-4 6110 ' for Style D wiring
diagrams. The Z1%VMOD2 installation manual may be d—nloaded from the
System Sensor web site at —systemsens-rom.
INSTALLATION

Remove power from alarm control unit or initiating device circuits before in-

NOTE: To install units so that corresponding LEDs are lined up, refer to the
"Green LED" indicator on the base.
1. Wire the mounting base screw terminals per Figure 3a or Figure 3b. as
applicable.
2. Place detector on the base and Ratate clockwise. The detector will drop
into the base and lock into place with a 'click".
3. After all demean have been installed, apply power to the alarm control
unit.
4. Test each detector as described in Testing.

6. Notify the proper authorities that the system is in operation.

Dust covers are an effective way to limit the entry of dust into the smoke detec-
tor sensing chamber, However, they may not completely prevent airborne dust
particles from entering the detector. Therefore, System Sensor recommends
the removal of detectors before beginning construction or other dust produc-
,ng activity. When returning the system to service, be sum to remove the dust
exivers frona any detectors that were left in place during construction.
TESTING
Detectors must be tested after installation and following maintenance.
NOTE: Before testing, notify the proper authorities that maintenance is being
performed and th e system will be temporarily out of service. Disable the zone
or system undergoing maintenance to prevent any unwanted alarms.
Ensure proper wiring and power is applied, After power up, allow 80 seconds
for the detector to stabilize before testing.
Test ii Series detectors as follows:
A. TEST SWITCH

ing (See Figure 4).

Hold a smoldering punk stick or cotton wick at the side of the detector and
gently blow the smoke through the detwor until it alarms.
C. DIRECT HEAT METHOD (MODELS 2WT-6 AND 4WF43 ONLY)
Using a 1000- 1500 watt hair dryer, direct the heat toward either of the thermis-
lots. Hold the heat source about 12 inches from the detector to avoid damage
to the plastic.
NOTE: For the above tests, the detector will met only after the power source
has been momentarily interrupted.
If a delector tails any of the above test methods. its wiring should be checked
and it should be cleaned as outlined in the Maintenance section. If the detec-
tor mill fails.,I should be replaced.
Notify the proper authorities when the system is back in service.
LOOP VERIFICATION (MODELS 2W-B AND 2WT-B ONLY)
Loop verification is provided by the EZ Walk loop test feature. This feature
is for use with 1' 5 ties compatible control panels or the P Series 2W-MOD2
module only. The 2 Walk [nap test verifies the initiating Imp wiring and
provides visual status indication at each detector.
1. Ensure proper witing and power is applied. Wait approximately six min-
unes before performing EZ Walk test.
2. Place control panel or module in EZ Walk Test mode (refer to panel man-
ufacturer's manual or 2W-MOD2 manual D500-46-00).
3. Observe the LEDs on each detector:

MAINTENANCE
NOTE: Before perfuming maintenance on the detector, notify the proper an-
thorides that maintenance is being performed and the system will be tem-
porarily out of service. Disable the zone or system undergoing maintenance
to prevent any unwanted alairms. Power must be removed from the detector
before performing maintenance of any kind.
I . Remove the detector cover by turning counterclockwise. (See Figure 6.)
2. Vacuum the cover or use canned air (a Remove any dust or debris.
3. Remove the top half of the _%creen/sensing chamber by lifting straight up
(Figure 5).
4. Vacuum or use canned air to remove any dust or particles that are pres-
ent on both chamber halves.
5 Replace the top half of the screen/sensing chamber by aligning the arrow
an the screen/sensing chamber with the arraw on (he housing. Press
down firmly until the screen/sensing chamber is fully seated.
6. Repbce the detector criver by placing it over the mocen/sensing chamber
and turning it clockwise until it snaps into place.
T Reinstall the detector and test. (See the Testing section.)

Description
The four zone SK-4/E is a 24 VDC
FACP that provides four Class B

The SK-4/E NAC protocol includes the
ability to silence audible devices while
strobes continue to flash, using only a
single pair of wires. The SK-4/E is also
compatible with conventional input
devices such as two- and four -wire

Engineering Specifications
The contractor shall provide a completely electrically supervised fire alarm control panel Silent Knight Model SK-4/E. The system shall
contain a fire alarm control panel capable of operating and supervising smoke detection devices, alarm notification devices, and an on-
board annunciator. It shall be compatible with a digital communicator accessory.
The fire alarm control panel shall have a power limited supply, four Class B initiation circuits which shall accommodate heat detectors,
smoke detectors, and manual pull stations. Smoke detection shall be achieved with either 2- or 4-wire detectors that are compatible with
the system. The initiation inputs shall be programmable as 1) verification zones in which detectors are automatically reset one time
before signaling an alarm condition; or 2) combination waterflow supervisory zones that allows the FACP to distinguish between an alarm
switch (waterflow device) and a supervisory switch (tamper) installed on the same circuit. The FACP shall have two 2.5 amp or 5 amp
(with an additional optional standard transformer) programmable notification outputs. It shall have dedicated relays for alarm, trouble, and
supervisory. It shall have two power outputs, one resettable and one non-resettable, each rated at 500 mA.
The FACP shall have an on -board annunciator to indicate alarm, supervisory, trouble, and maintenance conditions. The annunciator must
include LEDs for AC, GENERAL TROUBLE, ALARM SILENCE, WALK TEST, EARTH FAULT, AND LOW BATTERY. The annunciator
shall also contain LEDs to annunciate fire alarms, troubles, supervisory, and maintenance by zone. The FACP must be fully operational
from the annunciator and include buttons for ACKNOWLEDGE, ALARM, SILENCE, RESET, and WALK TEST. The annunciator must also
have separate DISABLE switches for each zone and notification circuit.

On June 4, 1982 the Edmonds Fire Department conducted a
test of the fire alarm system at the Golden Leaves Condominium.
The test was to determine if the sounding devices meet the cur-
rent audibility standards. The minimum requirements are 60
decibels or 15 decibels over ambient sound levels which are
greater than 45 decibels. The decibel level recorded from the
bedroom of Unit #209 was 70 decibels, a passing level. The
secondary battery power supply is no longer functional and no
longer complies with National Fire Protection Association Stan-
dard 72A. This deficiency will have to be corrected to bring
your system into compliance.
Also, as stated in the letter dated May 26, 1982, emer-
gency lighting must be provided for all hallways and stairways.
The previous letter.also stated that approved self -closing
devices will be required for all doors opening into a common
hallway.

SUBJECT: REVISION IN THE FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY CODE
Due to recent,changes in the new Edmonds Community Development Code
and Life Safety Code,, the Fire Marshal's Office will be enforcing
the following requirement(s).
1. Emergency lighting for means of egress.
2. Approved self -closing devices on dwelling unit doors
which lead to common areas (corridors).
The Fire Department will schedule an appointment when we will test
the fire alarm system sounding devices to determine if they comply
with current audibility requirements.
Please make arrangements to meet with a representative of the Fire
Marshal's Office for further explanation of the change(s) required.
If we have not heard from you within 30 days, a representative from
the Fire Marshal's Office will be out to reinspect for compliance.
If we may be of any assistance, please contact this office by calling
775-2525 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through
Friday.
