In reference to Edmonds Medical Plaza, 21616 76t' Ave W, the building was originally built in 1972 as four
separate buildings. Over time, numerous modifications to the building have been completed (at least 25 tenant
improvements). This includes the construction to create one building by enclosing the "outside" walkways
between buildings. My records indicate the original fire alarm was installed in 1987 and shows initiating
devices (heat detectors) above and below the suspended ceilings. Sometime later, when the building was
enclosed, the fire alarm was modified to include initiating and notification devices in the common hallways. I
found additional information in a plan review conducted in 2006, indicating the heat detectors in the plenum
areas were to remain in place.
It is not a common practice to lower the level of protection in an existing building; therefore the following are
requirements for the fire alarm upgrade (not all inclusive):
-Maintain and add where necessary heat detectors in the plenum areas.
-Provide smoke detectors in the skylight/atrium areas. NFPA 72 (2014) 17.7.3.3 Peaked ceilings which reads:
"Detectors shall first be spaced and located within 36 in of the peak, measured horizontally, the number and
spacing of additional detectors, if any, shall be based on the horizontal projection of the ceiling".
The above requirements are based on the International Fire Code (2012) 102.9 Matters not provided for.
"Requirements that are essential for the public safety of an existing or proposed activity, building or structure,
or for the safety of the occupants thereof, which are not specifically provided for by the code, shall be
determined by the fire code official."
