In accordance with your request, Earth Solutions NW, LLC (ESNW) has prepared this letter and
evaluation of infiltration characteristics of the native silty sand deposits throughout the site. As
part of the preparation of this Infiltration Evaluation, the above manual and site plans were
reviewed. As illustrated on the referenced Grading Plan prepared by Lovell-Sauerland &
Associates, a series,of chambers will be installed below the backyard area located to the west
of the proposed new single-family residential structure. Silty Sand deposits encountered at the
test excavations throughout the site possess low infiltration characteristics, however, are
suitable for the proposed infiltration system as currently designed. Hand Auger test pits were
excavated in the area of the proposed infiltration facility. The approximate location of the hand
auger test sites are illustrated in the Hand Auger Location Plan (Plate 1), and the soil logs are

Hand auger test pits were excavated along or near the alignment of the proposed infiltration
system (see attached location plan and logs). The excavations were advanced to depths of
approximately six (6) to six and one-half (6.5) feet below existing grade. Soils were observed to
consist of silty sand (glacial till) deposits. Perched groundwater was encountered between one
and one-half (1.5) and two (2.0) feet below current grades at all test excavations (November,
2012). Sieve data from representative soil samples collected. at the test excavation sites are
attached to this letter.
Based on existing grade along the approximate alignment of the proposed infiltration system,
the test excavations were advanced sufficiently deep to adequately characterize soil and
groundwater conditions to a depth of at least three feet below the proposed facility. Relative to
existing grades, the proposed facility will be located roughly one to three feet below the current
ground surface elevation. Very little to no final grading will be required to achieve finish grade
at the backyard or infiltration facility. Test pits were advanced to depths between six (6.0) and
six and one-half (6.5) feet below current grades, respectively, representing depths of roughly
three (3.0) feet and one-half (3.5) feet below the base of the planned infiltration system. Soil
throughout the proposed infiltration facility consists of loose to medium dense weathered till at
the upper two to four feet. Medium dense to very dense unweathered glacial till soils consisting
of silty sand was identified at each hand auger test pit location with light to moderate perched
groundwater seepa * ge at or near the contact between the weathered and unweathered soil
horizons. Given the presence of groundwater in the test excavations,. and given the time of the
testing (November, 2012), groundwater related influences to the performance of the proposed
infiltration system should be expected.
Design Infiltration Rate
For design, *the long term infiltration rate was evaluated based on the criteria specified in the
referenced 2005 DOE Manual (Section 3.3.6). Table 3.7 of th'e referenced DOE Manual
provides criteria for estimating the long term infiltration rate based on USDA soil textural
classification. Based on the sieve analysis data from soil samples collected at hand auger
locations, the USDA textural classification identifies the underlying soils as a loamy sand soil
deposit. Based on interpolation of the Table 3.7 values, loamy sand soils would correspond to
short term infiltration rates of approximately 2.0 in./hr.
Based on the sieve analysis testing and observation of soil conditions during the field
exploration, the criteria specified in Table 3.7 of the referenced DOE Manual is an acceptable
method for deriving a long term infiltration rate. Based on review of the soil data and
referenced DOE Manual, the following long term infiltration rate is recommended for design:
0 Recommended Long Term Infiltration Rate 0.50 in./hr.
The above recommended infiltration rate is relatively conservative, in our opinion, given the
previous interpolation of the Table 3.7 values and a reduction factor of 4.0. The geotechnical
engineer, however, should observe the excavations for the proposed infiltration system to
,confirm soil conditions at the time of construction.

Long term Infiltration rates at subsurface infiltration facilities may be unreliable during prolonged
heavy rain events due to the underlying glacial till soils and the presences of perched
g rou ndwater. seepage. In our opinion, the overflow provision within the referenced plans will be
sufficient provided -water off down -spout splash blocks is allowed to flow away from adjacent
foundations and to the heavily vegetated portions of the backyard located west of the proposed
residential structure.

In accordance with your request, Earth Solutions NW, LLC (ESNW) has prepared this letter and
supplement geotechnical evaluation. ESNW previously prepared the referenced infiltration
evaluation for the site. The planned infiltration facility will consist of a series of chambers that
will be installed below the backyard area located to the west of the proposed new single-family
residential structure. The infiltration facility has been sized based on a conservative long term
infiltration rate of 0.5 in./hr., and from our review, represents a relatively large system for a
single residential lot. Based on our review and supplement evaluation of subsurface conditions,
onsite infiltration using the proposed series of chamber is feasible from a geotechnical
standpoint. Additionally, as discussed below, the presence of a locally shallow perched
groundwater seepage zone is not expected to significantly impact the performance of the
infiltration facility.

Although a shallow perched groundwater seepage zone was encountered at the time of our
subsurface investigation (Nov. 2012), an established (true) groundwater table was not
encountered. Upon further analysis and discussions with the staff geologist who performed the
fieldwork, the seepage was confined to a discrete zone within the upper topsoil and weathered
soil horizon (1.5' to 2.0' depth). This upper horizon of topsoil and weathered material is
relatively impermeable, locally restricting * infiltration of surface water throughout the
undeveloped site. The proposed infiltration facility will penetrate through the upper less
permeable topsoil and weathered soils horizon, exposing non -water bearing soils. In this
respect, the observed shallow seepage zone does not represent a true groundwater table. The
planned development will incorporate impervious surfaces (roof / driveways), and will effectively
serve to (locally) eliminate development of this shallow perched groundwater seepage zone. In
this respect, and based on further analysis, shallow (perched) groundwater is not expected to
significantly impact the performance of the proposed infiltration facility.

SHALL BE REMOVED FROM ROADS BY SHOVELING OR SWEEPING AND BE TRANSPORTED TO A
CONTROLLED SEDIMENT DISPOSAL AREA WITHIN 24 HOURS. STREET WASHING SHALL BE ALLOWED
ONLY AFTER SEDIMENT IS REMOVED IN THIS MANNER.

ALL SOILS EXPOSED BY LAND DISTURBING ACTIVITIES SHALL BE STABILIZED BY SUITABLE
