In reiteration of our phone conversation on May 17, the fire department feels that a single lodkbox
may suffice, due to the building location and entry configuration on your property. One box at the
Northeast entry is arecommended central location where means of access can be quickly retrieved
and utilized. Again, this is a strictly voluntary program.

Per yourrequest, the following recommendations are provided from
the 1991 Uniform -Building Code, chapters 33 and 43, regarding fire
doors. I've itemized the areas of your concern:
1) Doors serving the exit corridors,
2) Interior door openings (to each unit)..
.3) Smoke -proof stairwell enclosures,
4) Other safety recommendations.
1) Doors serving the exit corridors.
Doors serving the laundry room, mechanical. room, multi -purpose
room, passage doorway, 'as well as the exterior doors are
recommended to be of a one -hour fire -resistive construction. Doors
may be maintained self -closing or be automatic closing by actuation
of a smoke detector.
2) Interior door openings (to each unit).
Each unit door assembly is recommended to be protected by a tight-
f itting, smoke- and draf t-control assembly having -a f ire protection
rating of 20 minutes or better. Doors may be self -closing. smoke -
and draft -control door assemblies may be provided with a gasket so
installed as to provide a seal where the door meets the stops on
both sides and across the top. It is not recommended to hang a
fire -rated door'in the existing jambs.
3) Smoke -proof stairwell enclosures.
Your neighbor.had mentioned earlier recommendations from the Fire
Marshal or Senior Inspector tegarding*sm"oke-proofing stairwells.
To provide this,, a..building permit can be obtained with submission
of plans for construction of one -hour' fire -resistive door
assemblies at the foot of either stairwell. The advantage to
enclosing the stairwells is twofold: to protect the'exit ways,
from the lower level to the front doors, from accumulating smoke,
as well as isolating the manifesting fires between floors.

*The storage spaces, as constructed with wire fencing materials,
expose the lower corridor' to a large quantity - of combustible
materials. Flammable and combustible liquids could also find their
way into these storage spaces. A one -hour fire -resistive wall with
matching door ratings would slow a fire and discourage smoke from
accumulating in the lower corridor.
*A central fire alarm system with detection coverage in each unit
and throughout the common areas would provide early warning to
homeowners, and alert emergency services to a situation, while it
is still at an easily manageable level.
*A costly recommendation is the retrofit of an automatic sprinkler
system which can maintain the, exit ways while homeowner's escape
from a fire -related situation.
