They operated as prescribed They are manual -only resettable with fusible link (heat actuation) as required. The fire door/exit to the interior stairs provides for egress once activated. The smokes are all tied to fire alarm system and any alarm will activated automatic doors. Their signs are humongous! Two required exit signs are missing as designed on plans. One exit sign fixture is not correctly wired for "test". The Fire Lane striping is not complete -will stripe and label around rear of building. I asked also to repaint the No Parking area in front of FDC/PlV and remove parked trucks there. They figure next week before work is complete, anyway. The maintenance problems due to loss of air pressure through the hose valves in other types of systems would outweigh their value. The pressure at the outlet is restricted to 100 psi (6.9 bars) due to the danger to the operator in using a hose subject to high pressure, either static or under flow conditions. Therefore, 100 psi at the hose outlet is the maximum pressure under both conditions. A-3-3.7 One and one-half (I V2) in. hose connections for use in storage occupancies and other locations where standpipe systems are not required are covered by this standard. When Class H standpipe systems are required see the appropriate provisions of NFPA 14, Standardfor the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems, with respect to hose stations and water supply for hose connections from sprinkler systems. One and one -half -inch hose connections supplied from sprin- kler systems have been successful in extinguishment and fire control for many years. It is felt that the requirements for Class H standpipe systems in NFPA 14, Standardfor the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems, should not apply to hose connec- tions attached to sprinkler systems inasmuch as this would impose severe water supply and pressure requirements on the sprinkler system. 3-3.8* Hose Connections for Fire Department Use. In buildings of Light or Ordinary Hazard Occupancy, 21/�-in. (64-mm) hose valves for fire depart- ment use may be attached to wet -pipe sprinkler system risers. (See 2-2.4.2) The following restrictions apply: (a) Sprinklers shall be under separate floor control valves. (b) The minimum size of the riser shall be 4 in. (102 mm) unless hydraulic calculations indicate a smaller size riser will satisfy sprinkler and hose stream demands. (c) Each combine(] sprinklerand standpipe riser shall be equipped with a riser control valve to permit isolating a riser without interrupting the supply to other risers from the same source of supply. (d) For fire department connections serving standpipe and sprinkler systems, refer to Section 2-7. This section allows 21/2-in. (64-mm) hose connections to be attached to wet -pipe sprinkler systems. These connections may be used for final extinguishment of the fire or to cool residual heat. Paragraph 2-2.4.2 provides requirements for calculating the water supply under these circumstances. A-3-3.8 Combined automatic sprinkler and standpipe risers should not be interconnected by sprinkler system piping. When risers are used to supply combination sprinkler and standpipe systems, guidance is needed to avoid confusion where systems In remotely located areas are controlled by more than one valve. No appreciable improvement in reliability Is realized by cross connection. 3 -4 System Test Connections. 3-4.1 Wet Systems. 3-4.1.1* A test connection not less than I in. (25 mm) in diameter, terminating in a smooth bore corrosion -resistant orifice, giving a flow equivalent to one sprinkler of a type having the smallest orifice instal ed on the particular system, shall be provided to test each waterflow alarm device for each system. The test connection valve shall be readily accessible. The discharge shall be to the outside, to a drain connection capable of accepting full flow under system pressure or to another location where water damage will not result. The primary function of the wet system inspector's test is to verify the operation of the waterflow alarm device(s) (water - motor gong, pressure switch, flow switch) at a flow equivalent to that of one operating sprinkler. A-3-4.1.1 This test connection should be in the upper story, and the connection should preferably be piped from the end of the most remote branch line. The discharge should be at a point where it can be readily observed. In locations where it is not practical to terminate the test connection outside the building, the test connection may terminate into a drain capable of accepting full flow under system pressure. (See A-3-6.4. 1.) In this event, the test connection should be made using an approved sight test connection containing a smooth bore corrosion -resistant orifice giving a flow equivalent to one sprinkler simulating the least flow from an individual sprinkler in the system. [See Figures A-3-4. 1. l(a) and A-3-4. 1. 1(b)] The test valve should be located at an accessible point, and preferably not over 7 ft (2.1 m) above the floor. The control valve on the test connection should be located at a point not exposed to freezing. The intent of this section is to require inspector's test connec- tions in a manner that will provide for the testing of all waterflow alarm devices. This section permits both an electri- stalled underground, would satisfy the condition expressed in this paragraph. graph 3-9-3.4 and its Exception call to attention that some pressure regulating valves incorporate an indicating shutoff valve lacking the tolerances needed for listing. 3-9.2.6* When a single wet -pipe sprinkler system is equipped with a fire department connection the alarm valve is considered a check valve and an additional check valve shall not be required. A-3-9.2.6 When a system having only one dry -pipe valve is supplied with city water and fire department connection it will be satisfactory to install the main check valve in water supply connection immediately inside of the - building; in case there is no outside control, the system indicating valve should be placed at the wall flange ahead of all fittings. An alarm valve is a check valve designed to provide facilities to activate waterflow alarms. Another check valve would be redundant and would increase the friction loss characteristics of the system. 3-9.2.7 Ina city connection serving as one source of supply, the city valve in the connection may serve as one of the required valves. A listed indicating valve or an indicator post valve shall be installed on the system side of the check valve. (See Figure A-3-9.2.5.) Lixception: When a wet -pipe sprinkler system is equipped with an ('alartn) check valve, a gate valve is not required on the system side of the (alarm) check valve. The intent of requiring gate valves on both sides of a check valve is to provide facilities for isolating the check valve for maintenance or'repair while permitting the system to remain in service. If the system has only one automatic supply, a gate valve on the system side of the check valve is not required. it should be recognized that the alarm valve is a specialized device and that control valves are not required on the system side of alarm check valves. 3-9.3 Pressure Reducing Valves. There have been documented instances of pressure regulat- ing valves intentionally being set to provide an inadequate outlet pressure. For this reason, 1-11.5 requires that each pressure reducing valve be tested upon completion of the installation. The reliability of these valves is also a matter for concern if they are not periodically exercised; thus, they should be tested annually. The intervals at which the valve should be tested will be governed by the manufacturer. Para- 3.9.3.1 in portions of systems where all components are not listed for pressure greater than 175 psi (12.1 bar) and the potential exists for normal (nonfire condition) water pressure in excess of 175, a listed pressure teducing valve shall be installed and set for an outlet pressure not exceeding 165 psi (11.4 bar) at the maximum inlet pressure. 3-9.3.2 Pressure gages shall be installed on the inlet and outlet sides of each pressure reducing valve. 3-9.3.3 A relief valve of not less than ;/2 in. (13 mm) in size shall be provided on the discharge side of the pressure reducing valve set to operate at 2pressure not exceeding 175 psi (12.1 bar). 3-9.3.4 A listed indicating valve shall be provided on the inlet side of each pressure reducing valve. Exception: Where the pressure reducing valve meets the listing require- mentsfor use as an indicating valve. 3-9.4* Identification of Valves. When there is more than one control valve, permanently marked identification signs indicating the portion of the system controlled by each valve shall be provided. Embossed plastic tape, pencil, ink, crayon, etc., shall not be considered permanent markings. The sign shall be secured with noncorrosive wire, chain, or other means. A-3-9.4 All control, drain, and test connections should be provided with Identification signs. Signs identifying control valves must be of a clearly legible type and installed in a manner that ensures their ability to remain in place. See Figure 3.4 on page 142. 3-10 Hangers. 3-10.1* General. Type of hangers and installation methods shall be in accordance with the requirements of Section 3-10. Exception: Hangers and installation methods certified by a registered professional engineer for the following: (a) Designed to supportfive times the weight of the water-,filledpipe plus 250 lb (114 kg) at each point ofpiping support. connection. Exception: Wben cusbion tanks are used with automatic fire pumps, no cbeck valve is required in the cusbion tank connection. 3-9.2.3 Valves on connections to water supplies, sectional control valves, and other valves in supply pipes to sprinklers shall be supervised open by one of the following methods: (a) Central station, proprietary, or remote station signaling service, (b) Local signaling service that will cause the sounding of an audible signal at a constantly attended point, (c) Locking valves open, (d) Sealing of valves and approved weekly recorded inspection when valves are located within fenced enclosures under the control of the owner. Exception No. 1: Underground gate valves witb roadway boxes need not be supervised. Exception No. 2: For floor control valves in higb-rise buildings, see 3- 12.6; for circulating closed -loop systems, see 5-6 1.6 The four methods of supervision represented here will help to assure that a common mode of sprinkler system "failure" is reduced to a minimum. Approximately one-third of system failures are attributable to closed or partially closed sprinkler system control valves. Listed in descending order of prefer- ence, these methods are derived from NFPA 26, Recommended Practicefor the Supervision of Valves Controlling Water Supplies for Fire Protection. Central station, proprietary, or remote station supervision methods are preferred over the other methods listed. Supervi- sory signals received at such alarm facilities are usually for- warded to trouble or maintenance crews responsible for the pro(ccted property. This method also allows much quicker notification of fire departments which respond to fire alarm boxes at the protected premise. Knowing early on that a control valve has been closed for any reason may alter the fire depart- ment response and fire fighting tactics. These particular meth- ods have not, however, been mandated due to the cost of such a system, particularly in existing large, spread -out plants. Each source of supply must have a check valve to isolate the supplies from each other. In a fife situation, water flows from the highest pressure source. For example, consider a system supplied by a gravity tank, a city connection, and a fire department connection, with the gravity tank being the high- est pressure source. initial flow would be from the gravity tank. If its pressure dropped below the city connection pressure, the tank's check valve would close and supply would be from the city. When the fire department connected onto the system, the check valves in both automatic supplies would close and supply would be through the fire department pumps via the fire department connection. A cushion tank, when installed, is a part of the fire pump supply and, as such, is subject to the pump's check valve. 3-9.2.5* A check valve shall be installed in each water supply connection if there is a fire department connection on the system. If a check valve were not installed in an automatic supply, pressure developed via the fire department connection would be dissipated into the supply. All sources, whether automatic or nonautomatic, must have check valves so that pressure from the highest pressure source is concentrated in the system. When water supplies other than circulating public systems are used, care should be taken that components (piping, pumps, or tanks) are reliably installed and maintained. Even though the capacities of private systems may be. adequate, the reliabili- ty of these ernergen . cy supply systems may not prove equal to public systems without regular periodic testing, maintenance, and supervision. Public systems are "tested" and "supervised" continually by domestic usage of water, while private systems sometimes remain idle for long periods of time. 2-7 Fire Department Connections. A fire department connection to any sprinkler system pro- vides a desirable, auxiliary water supply to that system. By supplementing the "automatic" supply required by Section 2-1, some increased reliability in system performance should be recognized. Fire department pump operators can also deter- mine if any sprinklers have actually operated by using the fire department connection. 2-7.1* Afire department connection shall be provided as described in this section. Exception No. 1: The fire department connection may be omitted for systems having 20 sprinklers or less. Exception No. 2: When permission of the authority having jurisdiction has been obtainedfor its omission. Seldom, if ever, should fire department connections be omit- ted from sprinkler systems, except as noted in the two Excep- tions. In most cases they allow the fire department to bypass a closed control valve. When omissions are considered, they are normally for very small buildings that are completely without interior partitions and have windows and doors that provide easy access for manual fire fighting as a supplement to normal sprinkler operation. Even when gravity tanks or pressure tanks are the sole source of supply, fire department connections should be included. This allows fire departments to pump from tanker trucks directly into the system, thereby either increas- 1-3 in. I responded to your question six as follows; There is no reference in the codes to exiting from a lesser to a greater hazard occupancy but since a corridor h&s been established it would be required to continue to the outside.
