The Mayor requested that I respond to your request for a four-way stop at 8th
Ave. and Main St. Thank you for your interest in the safety and welfare of the
pedestrians in Edmonds. The situation at that location has been reported
before, and City staff has worked on solutions to the problems you noted.
The Police Department and Engineering Division made a presentation to the City
Council in November 1994, after studying the intersection by counting cars and
observing speeds. There was not sufficient vehicular or pedestrian traffic at that
intersection to ' warrant installation of an all -way stop. The Council was not
receptive to a restricted zone with stops and creation of a pedestrian safety zone
in the area of the Anderson Center. However, it isexpected that this issue will
be revisited, possibly at the March 14 meeting of the City Council. While this
meeting is not scheduled to be a public hearing, you are welcome to attend. You
may wish to state your concerns to the Council members before that meeting.
The safety of pedestrians in this area w ill continue to be a concern to the
Engineering Division and the Edmonds Police Department. It is recommended
that you also communicate directly with. the Edmonds Police so that they can be
aware of the need for continued enforcement in this area.

I am writing concerning the traffic on Main Street'
by the Anderson Center. I feel a four way sigAn
should be Posted there. At this time there Is. a
marked cross walk which very few drivers stop f or
when a waiting person is trying to cross. One day
I watched three small children wait and. wait while
the cars whizzed by. This is a common occurance---
I know because I live close by where I have watched
this careless driving for too long.
The.Playfield on the Ancerson Center is such a
wonderful plaue for all the children and is used so
much for baseball, soccbert.and all games. Altho
my children and grandchildren are past this age, I
still love watching the children and parents being
together and enjoying each other in su-ch a wide ope n
space right in the middle of Edmonds. Four stop
signs are n ot that big a expense ---- The only people
who object are the guilty ones who are too lazy to
stop for the cross walk.

situation.
The trees in question were hot planted by he City.,, but were there
when we purchased the property from the Sc4ol Disfrict. Our City
Pol icy is that we , do not top trees f or v - ews and we don � t pl ant
trees that grow over 25 feet. Trees and views are a problem in
Edmonds where there are;so many beautiful' viRws. Your neighbors are
very fortunate that you are so considerate; a lot of neighbors
aren't.
I'm sorry I can't give a more positive answey to your request.
