Dear Mr. Cronin:
HWA GEoSmNcEs INc (HWA) performed periodic construction observation and laboratory
testing for the above referenced project: The specific issues addressed included suitability of
selected backfill materials and compaction of structural fill materials. Attached are copies of test
reports generated during the course of this project.
Prior to backfilling, a sample of Type 17 mineral aggregate from Glacier Sand and Gravel was
provided to HWA for Laboratory Compaction Characteristics testing (ASTM D 1557, Modified
Proctor) and grain size distribution testing (ASTM C 136), as detailed on the attached reports,
Figures I and 2. The submitted material is considered suitable for use as structural backfill based
on the low fines content and well -graded particle distribution.
During backfilling, intermittent site visits were made by WA inspectors to monitor the progress
of the material placement and compaction. The backfill was placed in approximately 6" thick
lifts and compacted to a minimum of 95% of Modified Proctor in accordance with our
recommendations, as confirmed by field observations and field density testing (see attached Daily
Field Reports). . J
To the best of our knowledge, all the items observed and tested meet the
project.

Ichard McKinley on site at the request of Dick Cronin to observe compaction methods being used backfill of the
nterior swimming pool located at 22510-93d Place W., Edmonds, Wa. At the time of our visit the contractor had jack -
hammered the concrete slab in the base of the pool into rubble, to allow for bottom drainage. The interstitial voids
tithin the concrete rubble layer were filled in using clean sand that was sluiced into place with a garden hose. Sufficient

Additionally, I will notify all prospective buyers of the limitations on use and maintenance of
