Subject: Geotechnical and Drainage Evaluation
New Single Family Residence eea. 51, Ae
22708 - 93rd Place W., Edmonds, Washington NWQ.--
This engineering report presents the results of a geotechnical and drainage
analysis of the property and new single family home under construction at
AC41 U0 - Z701 U r- 1cluc VV ., U_U111U"U'_2" VVC1'__M1"yLU".
• Site plan and drainage plan (attached)
• Site photographs dated January 18, 2001 by D. Bruce, P.E.
This engineer performed an on -site geotechnical and drainage evaluation of
the new Carefree Construction home at 22708 - 93rd Place W., Edmonds, Washington
on January 18, 2001 (see photos). I
This building lot is accessible by means of a pipe stem driveway adjacent to the
existing residence on 93rd Place West. The building site is essentially level, with
some slight drop-off slope to the rear (westerly). The soil consists of relatively clean
coarse sands and gravels.
This engineer performed on -site infiltration drainage tests in accordance with
King County Surface Water Design Manual, Section 4.4.2, as well as commonly used
practices. A series of three (3) test locations (west of the proposed house footprint)
were utilized, incorporating the test procedure (holes dug, pipe properly placed,
ground saturated, measured amounts of water placed in pipe and saturated timing
tests with observations).
As anticipated, in the clean coarse sands and gravels, the i"WOEMPTNOMERING
almost meaningless. Water flowed essentially in a free -fall state.

The observable and measured infiltration rates were on the order of two to five
inches (2" - 5") per minute. However, good practice, conservative engineering, and
consistency with the Surface Water Design Manual results in a maximum infiltration
rate of twenty inches (20") per hour, or 0.333 inches per minute for design purposes.
Utilizing drainage analysis calculations, concludes an infiltration trench of forty-
eight foot (48') in length will conservatively handle the impervious surface water from
both the new house itself and associated driveway (see attached design and
calculations).
Based on this engineer's on -site investigation and experience with similar
properties, the following are concluded and recommended:
The preexisting storm water system utilizing ninety foot (90') of detention pipe LcL
not reguired, and is superseded by this infiltration design.
The on -site coarse sands and gravels are easily compatible with infiltration
trench drainage method.
An infiltration trench of forty-eight foot (48') in length will easily /conservatively
handle the storm water from the new house and associated impervious
driveway and parking areas.
On -site inspection by this engineer is required during installation of the
infiltration system.
If there are any questions, do noi hesitate to call.

Method of Analysis/Length of Roof Downspout Infiltration Trenches
The length of trench required is based on the assumption of providing a bottom trench area sized to
infiltrate at a rate equal to the rainfall intensity for the peak 10-minute time step for the 10-year, 24-hour
duration design storm event (Time step 460 to 470 minutes, 5.4% of totaf storm volume Plot see Table
3.5.1 A), and by the maximum infiltration rate (1m) which Is based on the Soil Texture Class by the United
States Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) designation system (see Figure 4.5.1 B and Table 4.5.1 A). The
length of trench required is determined by dividing the required infiltration Prea (Aj by 4 feet (the two -foot
trench widith plus one foot on either side for side wall infiltration). A, is computed using the following
equation:
AR = (0.054 P,oAp)/10 Im 116, j 0 0 ' _j -D r I -,-
Where: o e 3; ZE7
Plo 1 0-Year, 24-hour design storm total precipitation, inches (from Figure 3.5.1 E)
