The scope of our services included the logging and sampling of 2 test pits to obtain subsurface information for determining sto.rmwater management methods. The initial plan was to manage stormwater using a rain garden. We oversaw the- excavation of a test pit where the rain garden was proposed and we found that area was underlain by hard glacial till at the base of the topsoil layer. We interpreted this to be an area that had been cut since unweathered till was so close to tile ground surface. Based on these findings we excavated a test pit at the proposed new house location to see if similar soil conditions existed. The excavation revealed that glacial till was present at 3-1/2 feet below grade. Surface Conditions The property is an -irregular shaped parcel that is 0. 193 acres in size and is grass covered with some trees and shrubs. The property slopes to the east at about 3 percent. There is an existing home on the west side of the property and the plan is to remove the existing house and build a new house east of the existing house. Figure I is a site plan showing the property boundaries and site layout. Subsurface Conditions I Soil and groundwater conditions were investigated on March 11, 20.15 at the app�oximate test pit locations shown on theiSite Plan, Figure 1. Samples of soil s-encountered were obtained and soils were classified using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Edited, tabulated test pit logs are included in this report together with a USCS Chart explaining soil descriptions. In test pit I we encountered I foot of dark brown sandy gravelly organic SILT to silty gravelly SAND with nurnerous roots and organic matter (OUSM by USCS). This topsoil layer was underlain by gray silty SAND with some gravel that was very compact, and. was interpreted to be a sandy glacial till. In test pit 2 we logged 0.6feet of dark brown sandy gravelly organic SILT to silty gravelly SAND, with roots and organic matter (OL/SM by USCS) (topsoil). Below this topsoil layer we encountered an orange brown very silty fine to medium SAND with some rounded gravel (SM by USCS) that extended to a depth of 2.2 feet. Geotechnical Investigation 23402 75'h Ave. West Edmonds, WA March 16, 2015 Westem Geotechnical Consultant-,, Inc. #15 24 1 (Page 2 of 5) Below this layer we encountered a fine to coarse sandy GRAVEL with cobbles and occasional boulders ((GM by USCS) that extended to a. depth of 3.5 feet. Between 3.5 and 4.7 feet we encountered a gray silty SAND with sorne gavel that we interpreted to be hard glacial till. No groundwater was encountered in either of the test pits at the time of our subsurface investigation on 3/11/2015. Conclusions and Recommendations Based an our test pit investigation the initial stormwater management plan was changed. Since glacial. till soil in test pit I was encountered close to the ground surface, a rain garden would not be appropriate for that location. It was decided that tile proposed house could be moved back to the west on the lot by 20- feet to tile location shown on Figure 1. By moving the house location, the stormwater drainage frorn the western half of the roof will be dispersed by using splash blocks. For the eastern half of the house, there is enough room to direct the stormwater drainage to a level spreader, as shown on Figure 1. Splash blocks are limited to 700 square feet per splash block, and. they are required to have a minimum, 50 feet of vegetated flow path. A level spreader requires a minimum 25 foot flow path, so with the house moved to the west, a level spreader can be placed. 10 feet from the house and stil I meet the minimum flow path requirements. The three percent slope of the property to the cast will provide enough vegetation area to handle the stormwater runoff from the splash blocks and level spreader. A typical splash block detail and the level spreader detail are attached to this report. If during construction subsurface conditions encountered are different than those indicated in this report, we should be advised so we can review and revise our recommendations, if necessary. To convert concentrated runoff to sheet flow and release it onto areas stabilized by existing vegetation or an engineered filter strip. Conditions of Use Used when a concentrated flow of water needs to be dispersed over a large area with existing stable vegetation. Items to consider are: 1. What is the risk of erosion or damage if the flow may become concentrated? 2. Is an easement required if discharged to adjoining property? 3. Most of the flow should be as ground water and not as surface now. 4. Is there an unstable area downstream that cannot accept additional ground water? Use only where the slopes are gentle, the water volume is relatively low, and the soil will adsorb most of the low flow events. In general, if the ground is sloped away from the foundation and there is adequate vegetation and area for effective dispersion, splashblocks will adequately disperse storm runoff. If the ground is fairly level, if the structure includes a basement, or if foundation drains are proposed, splashblocks with downspout extensions may be a better choice because the discharge point is moved away from the foundation. Downspout extensions can include piping to a splashblock/discharge point a considerable distance from the downspout, as long as the runoff can travel through a well -vegetated area .as described below. The.following apply to the use of splashblocks: I A vegetated flowpath of at least 50 feet should be maintained between the discharge point and any property line, structure, steep slope, stream, wetland, lake, or other impervious surface. Sensitive area buffers may count toward flowpath lengths. 2. A maximum of 700 square feet of roof area may drain to each splashblock. 3. A splashblock or a pad of crushed rock (2 feet wide by 3 feet long by 6 inches deep) should be placed at each downspout discharge point. 4. No erosion or flooding of downstream properties may result. 5. Runoff discharged towards landslide hazard areas must be evaluate ' d by a professional engineer with geotechnical. expertise or a qualified geologist. Splashblocks may not be placed on or above slopes .'greater than 20% or above erosion hazard areas without evaluation by a professional engineer with geotechnical expertise or a licensed geologist, hydrogeologist, or engineering geologist, and jurisdiction approval. 6. For sites with septic systems, the discharge point must be downslope of the primary and reserve drainfield areas. This requirement may be waived if site topography clearly prohibits flows from intersecting the drainfield or where site conditions (soil permeability, distance between systems, etc) indicate that this is unnecessary.
