Dear Mr. Webb:
This letter report presents the results of our critical area geologic reconnaissance of the site
referenced above. The purposes of our work are to collect site geologic conditions with respect
to the proposed development, and present our opinions and recommendations, if appropriate, for
mitigating geologic impacts to the development proposed for this site. Our work was
accomplished in accordance with our proposal dated July 8, 2009 and your acceptance dated July
9,2009.
PROJECT UNDERSTANDING
We understand that the City of Edmonds (city)- notified you to obtain a construction permit for
kitchen addition at the single-family residence located at 23424 1 Wh Avenue West, Edmonds,
WA 98020 (Refer to the Vicinity Map, Figure 1 and Site Map, Figure 2). The city required you
to conduct a Critical Area Study because the Critical Area Reconnaissance Report identified the
residence location within Geologically Hazardous Areas critical area. However, following your
meeting with the city, you were informed to submit an abbreviated evaluation of critical area.
This letter presents evaluation of the critical area and it's impact on the kitchen addition.
We understand that no soil excavation will occur and the kitchen addition will be inline with the
existing western wall of the residence (Figure 2). NFED

SITE RECONNAISSANCE
A reconnaissance of the subject site was conducted on July 9, 2009. The site is located on the
east slope of a broad ridge. The property is located to the west of 100 the Avenue at an elevation
of approximately 144 feet contour line (Figure 3, LiDar Map). Western property boundary is
located at approximately 376 feet contour line. An elevation change of approximately 20 feet
occurs from the top of slope to the western wall of the residence. Two measurements of slope
inclination.indicated approximately 49% slope at theriorthern mid -slope portion and 37% at the
southern portion of the slope.
A recently published geologic map of the Snohomish -King County area (Figure 4) shows the site
underlain by Advance outwash deposits (Qva). Vashon Till (Qvt) deposits are present at higher
elevations above the Vashon Advance outwash sand deposits. Shallow soil exploration at the site
indicates dense, gray, gravelly sand. Soil probing suggests dense soil along the slope area.
No indication of drainage swales or small streams was observed during the reconnaissance. No
emergent seepage was observed within or near the site. Because of the vegetative cover and
good infiltration capacity of the surficial soils, little or no surface water runoff occurs within the
site, and no erosion problems were observed within the site.
Although minor scarps and sloughing of near surface soils occur within the steep slope area, no
indication of ancient or incipient large-scale slope failures was noted on the property.
SUMMARY
The subject property appears to be stable at the present time, and probably has been stable during
historic times. Making changes in the slope geometry, such as making cuts and placing fills,
may increase the potential for instability to develop but no such activities are planned for the site.
Increase in the soil moistureby storm water retention ponds, and concentrating runoff from
covered surfaces (roof drains and paved areas) may also increase the potential for slope
instability but no such alterations are planned for the site.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
It is our opinion that this site can be altered (kitchen addition) without compromising the stability
of this or adjacent properties provided that proper site development procedures are followed.
The native soils underlying the site slope consist of glacially consolidated sand and gravel. While
these soils are suitable for conventional residential foundation design and construction
procedures within the area identified, no excavation is planned for the kitchen addition.
It is our opinion that the existing steep slopes within the site are presently stable but are
susceptible to erosion and shallow debris slides if disturbed by construction or other activities.
However, no excavation is planned for the site.
LIMITATIONS
Our conclusions and recommendations are based on our understanding of the project as
described in this report and the site conditions as interpreted from our visual observations and the
references cited. Also, the conclusions, and recommendations contained in this report are based
upon site conditions as they presently exist, andfurther assume that the subsurface conditions are
not significantly different from those described in the references cited as being typical for this -
general area. Within the limitations of the scope, schedule, and budget, the conclusions and
recommendations presented in this report were prepared in accordance with generally accepted
professional engineering geology principles and practice in this area at the time this report was
prepared. We make no warranty, either expressed or implied.
This report was prepared for the exclusive use of Mr. Michael Webb. It should be made
