our limited subsurface exploration and infiltration study forthe above -referenced project. For
our use in preparing this letter, we have been provided with an undated plan that shows the
location. of the proposed residence.
This letter has been prepared for the exclusive use of Almark Corporation, and its agents, for
specific application to this project. Within the limitations of scope, schedule, and budget, our
services have been performed in accordance -with genera I fly accepted: geotechnical engineering
practices in effect in this area at the time our letter was prepared. No other warranty, express
or, implied, -is made.
SITE AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The subject site is located at 23729 76',Avenue- West in the Lake Ballinger Area of Edmonds,
Washington (Figure 1). The property consists of an approximately 0, 19-acre, irregularly -
shaped parcel (Snohomish County Parcel No. 00488600000500). The subject parcel is bound
to the north by a shared driveway, and -to the remaining sides by residential properties. The
ground surface at the proposed building site is generally gently sloping downward to the south
and east.
The proposed. project consists of constructing a new single-family residence at the above -
referenced site. We understand that an infiltration system is currently proposed to handle

storm water collected from the rooftop and driveway. Based. on our discussions with the
client, we understand that the tributary impervious surface area of the proposed project is
approximately 3,000 square feet. The purpose of this study was to document subsurface
conditions for the proposed infiltration system. This study included documenting near -surface
soil and ground water conditions in four exploration pits using two track -mounted excavators,
and a grain -size analysis of a sample obtained from the potential receptor soil horizon. An
AESI engineering geologist logged the soil conditions in each pit.
SUBSURFACE CONDfflONS
Exploration pits EP-1 through EP-4 were advanced to depths ranging from 9 feet to 10 feet
using a small track -mounted excavator (Komatsu PC45R). Exploration pits EP-1 and EP-3
were subsequently extended to 11.5 feet and 13 feet, respectively, using a CAT 312 excavator,
to determine the thickness of potential infiltration receptor soils and depth to ground water.
Exploration pits EP-1 through EP-3 encountered fill extending to depths ranging from 6 to
9 feet below the ground surface at the locations shown on the "Site and Exploration Plan,"
Figure 2. The fill generally consisted of loose to medium dense silty sand with gravel with
organics in places, including buried topsoil. We also encountered assorted debris (e.g., wood,
metal, glass) within the fill-, particularly at EP-1. Underlying the fill, EP-1 encountered moist
to wet, brownish gray silty sand overlying bluish gray silt, interpreted as recent alluvium.
Exploration pits EP-2 and EP-3 encountered loose to medium dense, reddish brown silty sand
with gravel, which we interpreted to be weathered advance outwash. Underlying the
weathered outwash to the bottom of exploration pit EP-3, we encountered medium.dense, fine
to medium sand with gravel, which we interpreted to be Vashon advance outwash.
Exploration pit EP-4 encountered densie, moist, gray silty sand with gravel, interpreted as
Vashon lodgement till. Detailed exploration logs are attached to this letter.
Review of the regional geologic map titled Geologic Map. of the Edmonds East and Part of the
Edmonds West Quadrangles, by J.P. Minard (1983) indicates that the area of the subject site is
underlain by Vashon advance outwash (Qva) and Vashon lodgement fill (Qvt), with younger
alluvium (Qyal) surrounding Lake Ballinger. Our interpretation of the sediments encountered
at the subject site is in general agreement with the regional geologic map.
Ground water seepage was encountered at exploration pits EP- 1 and EP-3 at 11 and 11. 5 feet
below the ground surface, respectively. It should be noted that the depth or occurrence of
ground water seepage may vary in response to changes in season, amount of precipitation, and
site use. Exploration for this study was conducted during the months of February/March when
ground water levels are at or near their seasonal high.

LABORATORY GRAIN -SIZE ANALYSIS
We obtained representative samples from the exploration pits and performed a grain -size
analysis on a sample collected from EP-3 at 9.5 feet below the ground surface. The
classification of the sample tested most closely fits the texture class "sand" referenced in
Table C-1 of the 2010 Edmonds Stormwater Code Supplement (Edmonds Supplement), which
is taken from Table 3.7 in the 2005 Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology)
Stormwater Management Manualfor Western Washington (Ecology Manual).
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the grain -size analysis and the subsurface conditions encountered in our explorations,
it is our opinion that storm water can be mitigated using on -site infiltration into the advance
outwash encountered at exploration pit EP-3. The lodgement till encountered at EP-4 or the
alluvial silt encountered at EP-1 are not considered conducive to storm water infiltration. The
depth between the bottom of the fill (6 feet) and shallow ground water (11.5 feet) provides
sufficient separation to meet the minimum of 1 foot required by the City of Edmonds.
Based on Table C-1 of the Edmonds Supplement, this material has an uncorrected short-term
infiltration rate of 8 inches per hour, with an Estimated Design (long-term) Infiltration Rate of
2 inches per hour. Gravel -filled dry wells, extending to 9 feet below the ground surface at the
area southwest of the proposed building footprint, may be designed using a drywell surface
area of 24 square feet for every 1,000 square feet of tributary impervious surface, per Table 5
of the City of Edmonds' Low Impact Development (LID) Stormwater Best Management
Practices (BMPS) Simplified Sizing Development Information (#E72B) bulletin. Therefore, for
the proposed 3,000 square feet of tributary impervious surface, a drywell surface area of
72 square feet is stipulated. A Typical Drywell detail, provided in the above -mentioned City
of Edmonds #E72B information bulletin, is attached to this letter.
Footing drains may be discharged to the dry well, provided that connection between the footing
drain system and the infiltration system is a minimum of I foot below the base elevation of the
footings. Based on the soils encountered in our explorations, we expect little flow from the
footing drains, and that the volume of water from the footing drain system should not
significantly impact the expected performance of the proposed infiltration system.
The recommendations for on -site infiltration presented in this letter only pertain to the area
around exploration EP-3. If the proposed on -site infiltration system is located elsewhere on the
site, these recommendations do not apply and additional site investigation would be required.

As requested, this letter presents our response to a selected comment made in the "Storinwater"
section of the City of Edmonds review letter, dated May 7, 2014. In their letter, City staff
requested additional information regarding the proposed stormwater infiltration system. We
have previously issued' our "Limited Subsurface Exploration and Infiltration Study" letter, dated
March 20, 2014, for the subject project. The City's comment, followed by our response, is
presented below:

3. Drywell is shown in the location of EP-2. Associated Earth Sciences, Inc. Limited
Subsurface Exploration and Infiltration Study dated March 20, 2014 states that "The
recommendations for on -site infiltration presented in this letter only pertain to the area
around exploration EP-3 (page 3). The report goes on to say that "If the proposed on -site
infiltration system is located elsewhere on the site, these recommendations do not apply and
additional site investigation would be required " Please revise plans andlor provide
additional informationfrom AssociatedEarth Sciences.
For our review in preparing this letter, we have been provided with Sheet C2 ("Stormwater and
Utility") prepared by Lovell-Sauerland and Associates, Inc., and dated April 1, 2614. This plan
sheet shows a proposed 10-foot-diameter drywell to be placed near the southwest comer of the
proposed residence, in the vicinity of exploration pits EP-2 and EP-3. The planned bottom
elevation of the proposed drywell is 87 feet, approximately 9, to 10 feet below the existing
ground surface.

Edmonds, Washinglon Response to City of Edmonds Comment
As presented in our March 20, 2014 letter, exploration pits EP-2 and EP-3 encountered fill
extending to depths of 6 and 8 feet, respectively, below the ground surface. Underlying the fill,
exploration pits EP-2 and EP-3 encountered loose to medium dense, reddish brown silty sand
with gravel, which we interpreted to be weathered advance outwash. Underlying the weathered
outwash to the bottom of exploration pit EP-3, we encountered medium dense, fine to medium
sand with gravel, which we interpreted to be Vashon advance outwash. Ground water seepage
was encountered at exploration pit EP-3 at 11.5 feet below the ground surface.
Based on our review of the provided plan sheet and our March 20, 2014 letter, we anticipate that
the bottom of the proposed drywell will extend through the existing fill and into the outwash
soils encountered during our exploration. Also, the depth between the bottom of the drywell (9
to 10 feet) and shallow ground water (11.5 feet) provides sufficient separation to meet the
minimum of I foot required by the City of Edmonds. Therefore, it is our opinion that the
currently -proposed location and depth of the drywell should be suitable for the storrnwater
infiltration system -for the new residence.

1. ESC MINIMUM REQUIREMENT - C014STRUCTION ACCESS ROUTE CONSTRUCTION VEHICLE:
ACCESS SHALL BE, WHENEVER PRACTICAL, LIMITED TO ONE ROUTE. ACCESS POINTS SHALL BE
STABILIZED NTH QUARRY SPALLS OR CRUSHED ROCK TO MINIMIZE THE TRACKING OF SEDIMENT
ONTO PUBLIC ROADS. IF SEDIMENT IS TRANSPORTED ONTO A ROAD SURFACE, THE ROADS SHALL
BE CLEANED THOROUGHLY AT THE END OF EACH DAY. SEDIMENT SHALL BE REMOVED FROM
ROADS BY SHOVELING OR SWEEPING AND BE TRANSPORTED TO A CONTROLLED SEDIMENT
DISPOSAL AREA WITHIN 24 HOURS. STREET WASHING SHALL BE ALLOWED ONLY AFTER SEDIMENT
IS REMOVED IN THIS MANNER.
2. ESC MINIMUM REQUIREMENT - STABILIZATION OF EXPOSED AREAS:
ALL SOILS EXPOSED BY LAND DISTURBING ACTIVITIES SHALL BE STABILIZED BY SUITABLE
