Methodology:
This report provides calculations for the design of an onsite infiltration trench for the developed
impervious surfaces on a single family lot. Calculations comply with the City of Edmond's design
criteria of the 1998 King County Surface Water Design Manual (KCSWDM). An infiltration rate was
determined through field testing by Associated Earth Sciences, Inc. Please refer to that report under
separate cover for details. The rates found were very high, but in compliance with KCSWDM the
maximum rate of 20 inches per hour was used in the calculations as recommended by Associated
Earth Sciences, Inc.. The impervious area was calculated from the site plan provided by the
Developer has been included in this report.
Calculations:
Solve for Required Trench Length:
L = [(0.054 x P100 x Ar) 1 (10 x lm)] / (trench surface area)
Given:
L = ? (solve for length of trench)
P100 = 3.0 in (100-year precipitation)
A,= 3,140 sf (2982 sf [from site plan] + 158 sf contingency)
Im = 0.333 in/min. (20 in/hr per soils engineer)
Trench surface area = T+ T+ T= 9'(see Figure 1)
L = [(0.054 x 3 x 3,140)/ (10 x 0.333)] / (9) = 17'of trench

Dear Mr. Norberg:
This l6tter presents the! result's of.the subsurface 'exploration, and infiltration tes, ting'recently
domplete'd at the above -referenced site'.'' Our work has beefi. completed in general accordance
with our scope"of work letter dated December 12,. 2005, and ift'accordatice With generally
accepted geotechnical engineering practices in effect at'the time of this study -
SITE AND PROJECT CONDITIONS
The, subject. property consists of *a vacant single lot and a 4-lot short pla(located'on the east
side of- the street within the 23900 block of 104' Avenue West in Edmonds, Washington
(Figure' 1).' . Two homes. c:urrently -exist on the short plat parcel; an older, s ' ingle-story ho 'me,
. within' the northwest portion of the short plat, which is to be demolished, and, a two. -story
residence, which. is to remain within the southeast portion.of the short plat. The single lot has
1h

approximately 175 feet of frontage along 104 Avenue West and occupies approxi.
acr6s.. The rec.tangular-shaed short plat parcel. i's Situated to. the east of the single lot and.
occupies an area of approximately- 6.'85 acres., Both,'parcels are relatively flat -lying and at
approximately ' the same elevation as wester ly adjacent 104'h Avenue West. It.. is - our
understanding that current plans call for'construction of a single-family, wood7frame residence
on the single lot and on- each. of. the, three undeveloped lotswithin.the short'plat.. The ptirpose
of this study* isi to evaluate infiltration rates. for. on- site --infiltration of storm water runoff. from
the lots to be developed.

SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
In' order to evaluate irifiltration rates, infiltration testing was conducted within exploration pits
on the single'lot and on each of the three lots within the short plat to be developed. ' The
locatioris of the exploration pits are de icted on the Site and! txplor'ition, Plan, Figure 2
Exploration pits-EP-1 through EP-4 were initially excavated tba d6 th of approximately 2 feet
p
at which depth infiltration testing was performed.. Immediately after completion of infiltration
testing, the exploration. pits'Were excavated to a. depth of approximately -10 feet. . Conditions'
encountered in the. exploration pit were observed aid logged by a geotechnital engineer'fro'm
our firm.,
As'shown on the attached field logs, approximately 6 to.'8 inches of organic topsoil was
I 'f the topsoil encountered within
encountered in . our explorations. The upper -1 "rich 0
,exploration pit EP-3 included 1/4-inch crushed -rock presumably. placed'. t6 improve the surface
of the driveway.,
Native sediments encountered' below the topsoil layer generally consisted of loose (upper I
foot) to medium dense, rnoist:to very moist, light reddish brown (upper 2 feet) to gray, fine to
coarse sand with gravel and few 6obble. We interpret these . natiVe sediments to. be
representative of Vash6n recessional outwash. The Vashon recessional' outwash consists of
sediments'that were deposited by,m,eltwater strems' that emanated from the retreating glacial
ice during the latter, portion of the Vashon Stade of the Fraser Glaciation ending approximately
12,500 years ago. The lower density and light reddish, brown color observed in the upper
-portion of the native stratum Js interpreted to be the result of weathering., The Vashon
recess, ional outwash sediments extended beyond thd maximum depth of our site exploration.

No' ground, Wafer seepage was, encountered. during our exp1pra t ion.. It should be. noted, that the
depth and/or occurrence of ground water seepage may, vary due to such factors as changes in
season, precipitation, and site use.
INFILTRATION TESTING
it is our unders-tanding that, current plans call for infiltration* of storm'- water runoff on each of
the four lots -to be developed.. Field indiltration'testing was conducted in accordance with the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Falling flead Test procedure. Four infiltration tests
we're. conducted, one in,each of the'fou r ekplo, ration pits excavated as a I part of our..study. The
locations of the exploration 'pits iri-w.hich the infiltration tests were conducted are depicted on
Figure 2.
'2
fhe EPA Falling Head Test,'procedure utilizes a 6-.inch-diameter pipe driven into the soil to a
depth of approximaIdly 6 inches.', Two inches of gravel was placed across the surface of the
soil exposed Within the bottom of th6 pipe topTevent soil disturbance. The pipe was then fille8
with approximately. 12 to 24 inches of water, -measured above the gravel* surface usifig''water
from a hose bib adjacent to 104 th A -venue West, of an'alternate hose bib, adjaceht to the exi§ ting'
house in- the southeastern portion of the -site. The water level was m*aintained within the pipe
for at least I hour ai each of the test locations. Accordin
g'to the. EPA Falling Head Test
procedue: "In sandy'soils with little ok no clay, soaking is not necessary. —If afterfilling the
hole twice with 12 inches. of water, the.water seeps completely away in less than 10 minutes,
the falling, head percolation test can proceed immediately.. In order to determine the need- for
forther soaking of on -.site. soils, the pipe was filled with, at least 12 inches of cler -water and
the time for the water to seep, completely 'away Was recorded. This"wa.s repeated ..at'least 2
times -'at each infiltration test location. Time recorded for water.to seep completely away
ranged from approximately .9-to 3.0 minutes. Based on. this'and ofi the sandy nature of the
soil encountered on the site, infiltration testing, commenced immediately Without further
w
soaking. In preparation for each infiltration test, the pipe is filled..' ith water td a 4epth of
6 inches above gravel in the bottom of the pipe,'and the time required for'the Water in the pipe,
to fall each inch'for each of the 6 inches is recorded. The infiltration rate for each of the six
1-inch intervals,is then averaged. The test is therf repeated'two additional tinids. The results
of the tests'are summarizedbelow in Table'l'.

Followip'g completion tic,
of infiltration sting, the infiltration test locations were excavated down,
to'a depth of approximately' 10 feet below the existing ground surface to * evaluate subsurface
conditions below the depth at which. the tests were p6rformed. Sediments encountered below
the testing depth consisted of recessional outw.ash sand and gravel to the-m-Wirturn depth

3,
CONCLU5IONS.
Due to scale factors and effects, of soil saturation during intense or prolonged storm events,
infiltration -rates achievable on full-scale infiltration facilities typically are less than those
measured during short-term, infiltration -testing, such as the EPA Falling Head, Test. This is
due to such factors as ground water mounding,'the. effect of lateral infiltration during small-
scale testing, and the accumulation of fine-grained sediments. For this reason, we recommend
that a maximum infiltration (long-term) rate 6f 2 inches'per hour be used for infiltrkionsystern
design. The recommended infiltration rate of 2 'inches per hour is in,-conformance,.with the
maximum design infiltration rate presented in the 2065 Washington State Department' of'
Ecology Stormwater Management Manual for Western. Washington for sand -soil such as that
encountered- on-siie during our study.
The recommended .'design infiltration. rate, is based on the soil characteristics at the infiltration
test location and d.epth. Alth6ugh'.s6il-coriditioris may var'y-outside this area, they appeared to,
be fairly c ohsis ' tent at the'four exploration pit locat io'ns,evaluated for t his study If -storm water
infiltration. is td'be conducted outside the areas evaluated f6r. this study, we recommend that
Associated Earth Sciences, Inc. ver'ify'that subsurface conditions at the proposed infiltration
locations are suitable for -the recommended' infiltration rate.,
We appreciate this oppo rtunity to have been of service to you'with this project. If you should
have any questions or require additional geotechnical engineering consultation during design or
development of this short plat, please do not.,hesitate.to call..
Sincerely.,
