John Bissell presented the staff report, and stated that a new sign is being proposed, which projects over the public sidewak on a building which has a zero, setback to the street The business replaces Edmonds Variety and while restoring the old buildin& the upper level windows were revealed, leaving no areas to attach a sign. The Comprehensive Plan encourages both old building restoration as well as signs which are perpendicular to the sidewalk. The proposed sip will need to be at a height of 18 feet, 8 inches, where the allowable height is 14 feet. A variance will be required. The p!oposed sign material will be non -illuminated, high -density painted foam, with a painted cedar sign hanger bolted onto the side of the building. The sign colors will be burgundy with gold letters and trim, and the sign hanger will be green. Since this sign will require a variance, the ADB must first approve of the type and design. Staff recommends approval ofthis proposal. Carol Pritchard explained that the proposed sign is similar in color and design to the one at their previous location, although the new sign is larger. There were no audience comments on this project Boardmembers all agreed that the sign is appropriate and attractive. The applicant is in the process of restoring the old building, and in the process has exposed previously covered windows above the storefront. Due to the location of the existing windows, the applicant can only place the proposed projecting sign above the 14 foot height limit at 18 feet 8 inches. Due to the proposed sign height the application must receive variance approval and approval by the ADB. D. Staff Analysis: 1. Material: The sign will be painted high density sign foam. The sign hanger will be painted cedar. 2. Lighting: No illumination is proposed. 3. Colors: The applicant is proposing a burgundy sign with gold letters and trim. The sign hanger is proposed to be forest green. 4. Landscaping: The Community Development Code does not require additional landscaping with this proposal.
