Description and Summary for Proposed Mural Flying Heron by Sue Coccia (318 Main St) I have been working in the line of "Animal Spirits" for several years now. They are inspired drawings in pen and ink. The drawings depict animal images, or totems, from around the world. Animal Totems represent a deep spirituality, and by beginning to understand animals' qualities and traits, we can learn from them. In the same way, Flying Heron celebrates the Hidden Treasure of a heron in our marshland here in Edmonds. It also helps us to learn more about our environment, that we may treasure it more deeply. Painting Flying Heron as a large mural will help us all, hopefully, remember our close connection with the environment on our daily walks as we see the mural. M 4�� M 00 M n:5 0 rn C3 C* C M 0 M:5 C-) C= 0 Maintenance Requirements for Proposed Mural Flying Heron by Sue Coccia (318 Main St) This mural shall be painted on a building wall that has been leased by written contract for a length of ten years, with an option to renew. The Edmonds Mural Society, by contract with the landowner, is responsible for all maintenance and upkeep for this mural during the time specified by the contract. The Edmonds Mural Society shall maintain this mural in the following manner: This mural shall be mounted in keeping with the finest methods of mural creation to date. In specific, the wall shall be pressure -washed at least two weeks in advance of the mural raising. Second, before mounting the mural, a layer of primer shall be applied to the wall surface area. Finally, following completion of the mural, it shall be treated with a LTV - protective sealant to minimize fading or weather damage over the years. The two main sources of damage to a mural are sunlight and dampness. Each spring, this mural shall be examined thoroughly by technical consultants retained by the Board of the Edmonds Mural Society for signs of fading due to ultra -violet rays or dampness or weather damage. Any such damage will be immediately repaired in consultation with the technical consultant and artists hired by the Board of the Edmonds Mural Society. On a final note, the Edmonds Mural Society is often asked about protecting murals from vandalism, specifically "tagging." Surprisingly, the wealth of experience of mural societies across the country all agree: tagging of murals is not a serious concern. It almost never occurs. Then, too, on those rare occasions that tagging does occur, mural societies have uniformly found that cost of repairs is relatively cheap. (Quite simply, they paint over the tagging.) Moreover, all the mural societies that we asked agreed that while there are anti -tagging products available on the market, they are so expensive that their purchase is not justified when repairs to the rare mural tagged are so inexpensively, and quickly, carried out. Schedule for Development, Fabrication and Completion for Proposed Mural Flying Heron by Sue Coccia (318 Main St) Development: This mural design was submitted to the Edmonds Mural Society in January 2011 in the competition to select five murals to be mounted. At that time, by the date the artist submitted the design, its development was complete. Fabrication: This mural is being painted on the east wall of 318 Main Street. Therefore, there' is little fabrication occurring. Instead, the wall will be pressure -washed the week of June 5 - June 11. A coat of primer will be applied early in the week of July 3 - July 9. The mural itself, weather permitting, shall be painted during the week of July 6 - July 13. If the weather is not appropriate for the painting of the mural during this week, the Edmonds Mural Society will make arrangements for the painting of the mural on a following week. Completion: During the week following the painting of the mural, it shall be coated with a LTV - protective sealant to minimize fading, dampness, or weather damage over the years. M M5. C:) M �-< 0 M Cn < C') M Cf) 0 Artist's Resume for Proposed Mural Flying Heron by Sue Coccia (318 Main St) ARTIST'S STATEMENT: Award winning Northwest artist Sue Coccia is from Edmonds, Washington. She has a formal art schooling from the Burnley School for Professional Art, however her creative spark is ignited by a deep love of animals. Living in Edmonds in the Pacific Northwest allows her this intimacy with nature. The goal of her art work is to promote the protection for the habitat of endangered animals. Professional full time artist since 1996, her work can be found in stores, bookshops, and museums around the country. "Animal Spirits" are inspired drawings in pen and ink. The drawings depict animal images, or totems, from around the world. Animal Totems represent a deep spirituality, and by beginning to understand animals' qualities and traits, we can learn from them. Intricate pen & ink drawings on watercolor paper, meticulously hand -painted with acrylic paints. Look for the ladybug in every image: she represents good luck, happiness and prosperity! Coccia's Grandmother was Native American, and that tiny bit of heritage has had a large influence on her art. Indigenous art, and its relationship with the animal worlds has also influenced Coccia's unique style. A deep love of all animals was instilled at a very young age and Coccia has dedicated her life's work to them. Nova Color Artists Acrylic Paints has been made in Culverton, CA since the 1960s. Nova employs a tough, durable, 100% acrylic resin suitable for use outdoors. No additives are needed for exterior use. (By way of contrast: House paints or craft paints are often made with a less expensive and less durable latex or vinyl latex resin, designed to last 5- 10 years before recoating.) The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard D5098 rates the lightfastness of pigments (ie resistance to fading). Lightfastness I is the highest rating, and the majority of colors to be used in painting of this mural are rated 1. In addition, the clear topcoat Nova Color #216 Exterior Varnish or Nova Color #206 Gloss Medium & Varnish designed for exterior use by Nova will be applied to the completed mural to protect against dampness, fading due to UV rays or weather damage. Nova Color Artists Acrylic Paints conform with federal art material labeling guidelines and have been reviewed by a toxicologist. All colors except the cadmium colors (rarely used in murals) are labeled as follows: No health hazard labeling required. Labeling conforms with ASTM D4236. Chicago Public Arts Group recommends Nova paint in the painting of exterior murals, saying: "Many murals in Chicago have life spans of thirty years and more. With ongoing restoration and publication efforts, these works of art will speak to local, national, and international communities for decades to come." Lease Property, The Wall Owner hereby leases to the Society the entire east wall of the building (which space is referred to hereinafter as the "Wall") located at the property described as follows: Addressed 318 Main Street, Edmonds, Washington. Article 2. Compensation and Payment Schedule. Dispute Resolution. All disputes or controversies that may arise between the parties with respect to the performance, obligations or rights of the parties under this Agreement, including disputes as to the physical acceptability of the work on the Wall or any alleged breach thereof, which cannot be otherwise settled shall go to binding arbitration. Article 10. Notices.
