Dear Marshall Zweber,
I feel I should call three. fire, safety matters to your attention about the Edmonds
Center for the Arts.
(1) Last Friday night I attended the Piaf concert at the Edmonds Center for the
Arts. I noticed that two green exit signs "inside the theater were not lit at all, one on
each side. At least one other exit sign was dim compared to some - signs that were
brightlylit. I could, not tell if it had. the wrong wattage. bulb or if. there were
supposed to be two bulbs and one was burned out. Maybe others are dim, too.
At intermission I found and spoke with the House Manager. He acted surprised
and said he would try to look in during the second half of the show. I thought he
would take care of it. I would think that not only is this a code problem, but that
common sense about safety would have the ECA take care of this right away. The
ECA was used again with audiences both Saturday and Sunday.
Last night (Monday) I returned to the ECA for the Cascade Symphony Orchestra
concert and was shocked that the exit sign problem had not been taken care of. If
they do not take care of something as visible and obvious as this on their own, -- or
even after. an audience member called it to their attention -- I wonder if they have
other safety problems behind the scenes.
(2) Before the Monday symphony concert, an announcement was made from the stage
that those sitting in the balcony should only use the staircase on their left (as they faced
the stage) during intermission, since a private reception was being held on the right. I
think they should have added that if there was an emergency, then of course use the
nearest safe exit and staircase. Since the audience was largely elderly and cooperative,
it could have been tragic if there had been an emergency.
(3) The theater design has a major cross -over aisle on the main floor so audience
members from one side of the main floor can. get to the other side. of the theater in case
of an emergency. That aisle is now completely blocked by the sound board and
operator. I do not know if that is s code violation, but it certainly makes it impossible
for the audience to exit quickly to the other side' if due to a fire or earthquake or other
emergency they could not exit from the side of the theater closest to them.
I do not know if #2 or #3 are violations and of interest to you, but I figure you can
at least get them to fix the exit signs. Thank you for protecting the public.
