present in the same room, each container shall be separated from other containers
by a distance of not less than 20 feet.
E. Demonstration uses. Portable LP -gas containers are allowed to be used
temporarily for demonstrations and public exhibitions. Such containers shall
not be used for residential or commercial food preparation. Such containers
shall not exceed a 12-pound water capacity. When more than one such container
is present in the same room, each container shall be separated from other contain-
ers by a distance of not less than 20 feet.
F. Use with self-contained torch assemblies. Portable LP -gas containers
are allowed to be used to supply approved self-contained torch assemblies orsimi-
lar appliances. Such containers shall not be used for residential or commercial
food preparation. Such containers shall not exceed a 2'/2-pound water capacity.
2. Industrial vehicles and floor maintenance machines. Containers on
industrial vehicles and floor maintenance machines shall be in accordance with
U.F.C. Standard No. 82-1, Section 3-6.
(c) Location of Equipment and Piping. Equipment and piping shall not be
installed in locations where such equipment and piping is prohibited by the
Mechanical Code. See U.M.C. Chapter 5 and U.M.C. Appendix B, Chapter 22.
Location of Containers
Sec. 82.104. (a) General. The storage and transportation of LP -gas and the
installation and maintenance of pertinent equipment shall be in accordance with
U.F.C. Standard No. 82-1 and subject to the approval of the chief, except as
provided herein.
(b) Maximum Capacity within Established Limits. Within the limits estab-
lished by law restricting the storage of LP -gas for the protection of heavily popu-
lated or congested commercial areas, the aggregate capacity of any one installation
shall not exceed a 2,000-gallon water capacity.
(c) Container Location. Containers shall be located with respect to buildings,
public ways, and lines of adjoining property which can be built upon, in accor-
dance with Table No. 82.104-A.
Containers shall also be located with respect to special hazards such as above-
ground flammable or combustible liquid tanks, oxygen or gaseous hydrogen con-
tainers, flooding or electric power lines as specified in U.F.C. Standard No. 82- 1,
Section 3-2.2.6.
(d) Mulf1ple Container Installation. Multiple container installations with a
total storage'water capacity of more than 180,000gallons (156,0_001qgailon LP -gas
capacity) shall be subdivided into groups containing not more than 180,000
gallons in each group. Such groups shall be separated by a distance of not less
than 50'feet, unless the containers are:
1. Mounded in an approved manner,
2. Protected with approved insulation on areas that are subject to impingement
of ignited gas from pipelines or other leakage,

Scope
Sec. 82.101. Storage, handling and transportation of LP -gas and the installa-
tion of equipment pertinent to systems for such uses shall be in accordance with
this article. For determining properties of LP -gases, refer to U.F.C. Standard
No. 82-1, Appendix A.
Permits and Records
Sec. 82.102. (a) Permit. For a permit to install or maintain an LP -gas container
or operate LP -gas tank vehicles, see Section 4.108. Distributors shall not fill an
LP -gas container for which a permit is required unless a pen -nit for installation
has been issued for that location by the chief.
(b) Records. Installers shall maintain a record of installations for which a per-
mit is not required by Section 4.108 and have such record available for inspection
by the chief.
EXCEPTION: Installation of gas-buming appliances and replacement of
port -able cylinders.
Installation of Equipment
Sec. 82.103. (a) General. Liquefied petroleum gas equipment, including equip-
ment installed at utility gas plants, shall be installed in accordance with U.F.C.
other Idws-or-reg-ulations.
(b) '�se of LP -gas Containers in Buildings. 1. Portable containers. A.
Gene al. Portable LP -gas containers, asdefined inU.F.C. StandardNo. 82-1, shall
not be used in buildings except as specified in U.F.C. Standard No. 82-1 and this
subsection.

LP -gas containers are allowed to be used to supply quantities necessary for
processing, research or experimentation. When manifolded, the aggregate water
capacity of such containers shall not exceed 735 pounds per manifold. When
multiple manifolds of such containers are present in the same room, each manifold

9-3.2.4 Special Provisions for Food Service Operations.
9-3.2.4.1 All devices in connection with the preparation of
food shall be installed and operated to avoid hazard to the
safety of occupants.
9-3.2.4.2 All.devices in connection with the preparation of
food shall be of an approved type and shall be installed in an
approved manner.
9-3.2.4.3 Food preparation facilities shall be protected in
accordance with 7-2.3 and shall not be required to have open-
ings protected between food preparation areas -and -dining
9-�3'.24.4 Portable Cooking Equipment. Portable cooking
equipment that is not flue -connected shall be permitted only
as follows:
(a) Equipment fueled by small heat sources that can be
readily extinguished by water, such as candles or alcohol -
burning equipment (including "solid alcohol"), shall be per-
mitted to be used provided adequate precautions satisfactory
to the authority having jurisdiction are taken to prevent igni-
tion of any combustible materials.
(b) Candles shall be permitted to be used on tables used for
food service if securely supported on substantial noncombusti-
ble bases located so as to avoid danger of ignition of combusti-
ble materials and only if approved by the authority having
jurisdiction. Candle flames shall be protected.
(c) "Flaming sword" or other equipment involving open
flames and flamed dishes, such as cherries jubilee or cr6pe
suzette, shall be permitted provided necessary precautions
are taken and subject to the approval of the authority having
jurisdiction.
(d)* Listed and approved LP -Gas commercial food service
appliances as permitted by NFPA 58, Standardfor the Storage
and Handling of Liquefied Petroleum Gases.

technic device shall be used in any assembly occupancy.
Exception No. 1: Pyrotechnic special effect devices shall be per-
mitted to be used on stages before proximate audiences for cere-
monial or religious purposes, as part of a demonstration in exhib-
its, or as part of a performance, provided adequate precautio)is
satisfactory to the authority having jurisdiction are taken to pre-
vent ignition of any combustible material and use of the pyro-
technic device complies with 9-3.26
Exception No. 2: Open flame devices shall be permitted to be
used in the following situations, provided adequate precautions
satisfactory. to the authority having jurisdiction are taken to pre-
vent ignition of any combustible material or injury to occupants:
(a) * Where necessary for ceremonial or religious purposes;
(b) On stages and platforms as a necessary pail of a perfor-
mance.
(c) Where candles on tables are securely supported on sub-
stantial noncombustible bases and candle flame is protected.
Exception No. 3: Heat -producing equipment complying with
7-2.2.
Exception No. 4: Food service operations in accordance with
9-3.2.4.
Exception No. 5: Gas lights shall be permitted to be used pro-
vided adequate precautions satisfactory to the authority having
jurisdiction are taken to prevent ignition of any combustible
materials.
9-3.2.6* Pyrotechnic Devices. Pyrotechnic devices shall be
permitted to be used on stages and before proximate audi-
ences in accordance with the requirements of NFPA 1126,
Standard for the Use of Pyrotechnics before a Proximate Audi-
ence, and the following requirements.
(a) Binary materials shall be preweighed, premeasured,
-packaged, and identified by the manufacturer as being suit -
le for indoor use.
(b) Only pyrotechnic materials specified by the manufac-
-er of the pyrotechnic equipment shall be fired from that
uipment. See Exceptions Nos. 1 and 2 to Section 1-3 defini-
n of Manufacturer in NFPA 1126, Standard for the Use of
,otechnics before a Proximate Audience.
(c) Air bursts shall be permitted to be fired above the
;embled public subject to the following conditions:
(1) The air burst shall be suspended by a minimum
iuge metal wire that is substantially attached to a secure
ornbustible support.
(2) The air burst shall be at a minimum height of three
the diameter of the effect.
(3) Upon request, a walk through and a representative
monstration of the pyrotechnic special effects shall be given
the satisfaction of the authority having jurisdiction before a
rmit shall be approved. The demonstration shall be sched-
�d with enough time allowed to reset/reload the effects
6re the arrival of the audience.
UE747ception: The authority having jurisdiction shall be permitted
to waive this requirement based on past history, prior knowledge,
and otherfactors, if the authority is confident that the discharge
of pyrotechnic devices can be conducted safely.
(4) Where the effect is demonstrated, there shall be no
burning or glowing particles below the 15 ft (4.6 in) level above
the floor.
(d) Gerbs shall be specified as to burn time and the height
of the effect. There shall be no glowing or flaming particles
within 10 ft (3 m) of the audience. Upon request, a walk
through and a representative demonstration of the pyrotech-
nic special effects shall be given to the satisfaction of the
authority having jurisdiction before a permit shall be
approved. The demonstration shall be scheduled with enough
time allowed to reset/reload the effects before the arrival of
the audience.
Exception: The authority having jurisdiction shall be permitted
to waive this requirement based on past history, prior knowledge,
and other factors, if the authority is confident that the discharge
of pyrotechnic devices can be conducted safely.
(e) Flash Pots. Flash pots shall not be loaded beyond the
recommendations of the manufacturer of the flash pot, or with
any material not recommended for that device.

I appreciate your assistance and concern regarding our meeting on December 1 st. I wish
to relay some information regarding your portable propane cooking burner.
In'accordance with the Uniform Fire Code (UFC), Section 82.103(b)E; portable LP gas
(propane) containers shall not be used for commercial food preparation. The 5 gallon
container also exceeds the allowable quantity for an occupancy such as yours (UFC
Standard 82-1 5-3. 1. 1 ).
I must ask you to cease cooking operations with this appliance and remove the propane
container from your Cafe.
Should you require additional cooking space and appliances, a fixed installation could be
made utilizing the natural gas service and emergency shut-off already provided. The hood
system must accommodate the additional appliances. Contact the Building Department at
771-0220 for your permits and approval for this project.

As a result of that inspection and
have the following requirements:
1. Reduce the occupant load maximum to 67. This total
is derived from computing the total square feet used
for dining and lounge area, and divided by 15, which
is the square feet required for each occupant. (The
104 figure used previously was computed using the
entire floor area of your business, which included
areas not used by your customers, such as the kitchen,
restrooms, and storage area.)
2. Remove all storage from the north corridor and main-
tain a minimum width of 44" for exiting. (Exit cor-
ridor is indicated on the attached sheet.)
3. The requirement for emergency lighting must be complied
with now since the proposed remodeling may not be com-
pleted for quite some time.
4. Remove the curtain from the exit door in the dining
area so that it is easily recognizable.
A reinspection of your business will be conducted on December 11,
1981, to determine your level of compliance. Ifyou have any questions,
please contact this office by calling 775-2525, Ext. 233, between the
hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

This letter is to inform you of certain requirements being
placed on Chez Claude Restaurant, located at 419 Main Street,
in Edmonds. In addition to the requirements outlined in the
attached letter, the following items should be corrected by you,
the building owner:
1. Recharge the fire extinguisher located near the
electrical service panels and meters.
2. Replace the lights in the exit corridor leading
from the back of the restaurant. The exit cor-
ridor must be lighted at all times that the
restaurant is occupied.

SUBJECT: COMMERCIAL REMODELING AND ADDITION AT 5th & MAIN
After reviewing the plans for the changes to take place at
5th and Main Street, Edmonds,J have the following requirements:
General Building Requirements
1. Provide a dry standpipe in the north stair
enclosure. (City Code 19.75.015 D)
2. Provide fire extinguishers throughout the
building as indicated on the approved print.
Minimum fire extinguisher rating is 2:A,10:BC
dry chemical type,
lst Floor and the Restaurant Area
1. The exit passageway connecting the new lease
space and Chez Claude Restaurant to the
public way behind the building must comply
with sections 3304 and 3311 of the 1979 UBC.
(No storage is permitted.in the exit way.)
2. Emergency lighting is required that will
adequately illuminate all means of egress.
LSC 5-9
3. Interior finish shall be a minimum of class C.
4. The furnace room, mechanical rooms, and the
kitchen shall be separated from other parts
of the building with enclosures having not less
than one hour fire resistance rating. Openings
shall be protected by self -closing or automatic
closing fire rated assemblies.
2nd and 3rd Floors
1. Corridor construction shall be of not less

and the ceilings shall be not less than
that required for a one hour fire -resistive
floor or roof system.
2. All doors opening into corridors shall be 20

The proposal has been reviewed and approved in concept by the Amenities
Design Board. Prior to forwarding the permit request to the City Council,
your comments*are solicited. Your comments would be appreciated by April. 16.

On February 20, 1975, Henri DeNavarre was inspected by member's of
the Edmonds Fire Prevention Program.
As a result of the inspection we request the following corrections:
1. All outlet and switch boxes require cover plates.
(a) Outlet behind Brewmatic coffee machine
(b) Outlet behind wine shelves
(c) Outlet under electric blender
II. Exit Door:
(a) Remove obstruction blocking north exit door (double
seat).
N Passageway on north side of business shall be kept free
and clear of storage boxes and other items which may
impair exit travel from this area.
III. Extinguishers:
The Fire Extinguishers (including hood system) must be serviced
by licensed fire extinguisher service man and so tagged with his
signature, date of service and City of Edmonds license number.
Your extinguishers are,now due this service.
The Fire Department will reinspect your building after 15 days.
