The building is located in Fire Zone I which requires Class III interior finish. Cedar shingles have no rating. Forest Products laboratory tested cedar in an 0-n 81 Tunnel Test. Each test was lower than they had with redwood. Assuming it is a recognized testing laboratory, be feels the appeal,should be approved. Al Albers made a motion to approve the use of cedar shingles subject to Z James producing test results showing flame spread is below 225, due to the area involved and only the East and West walls, from 3' above floor to ceiling in the drafting room only. Z Harry Skinner, chairman, stated the motion was open for discussion. Albers amended his motion to require a minimum of 34" thickness. M Motion carried. The progression of,flame along the under- provid side of the specimen is measured and expressed as an index number. Basis for this materl index is a rating of 100 for the progression of flame on select red oak flooring' 39 pounds per cubic foot in density and a rating of 0 for progression on asbestos millboard. Along with flame -spread rates, smoke density and heat contributed by the test specimen were also measured and expressed as index numbers relative to red oak and asbestos, as explained in the reports describing the test method. Two tests were made on each material, with a third test when the results of the first two -,,rare not in adequate agreement. Test Materials The fiberboards, hardboards, particle boards, and plywoods were obtained largely through the courtesy of the respective manufacturers' associations.8 All were specimens of commercial. mill -run production. The sheets were usually 4 by 8 feet in size. From each 4- by 8-fo6t.sheat,. three test specimens 14 inches ,ride by 8 feet long were out. The lumber, nominally I inch thick, was obtained from sawmills or retail dealers. Mien conditioned to moisture equilibrium in 30 percent relative humidity and 80* F., the boards were surf . aced to a thickness of about 3/4 inch, tongued and groov ed,2 and assembled into panels held together by three nailed cleats on the back. Pieces shorter than 8 feet were end -squared and butt -joined. EThe Insulation Board Institute, the Hardboard Association, the Particle Board Association, the Hardwood Plywood Institute, and the Douglas Fir Plywood Association. —'An exception to this method of assembly was made for the redoedari which could not'be tongued and grooved.
