Periodically I receive an advertisement from Chambers Cable stating that I can have basic cable installed free. However, when the representative arrives he gives an estimate of from $400.00 to $500.00 for installation. The reason seems to be an ordinance that requires the line to be installed'underground. I believe the situation at Forsyth Lane is rather unique. on the south side the wiring is all above ground -while on the north it is mostly underground. The house next door to mine (545) has an overhead T.V. cable that actually crosses over my property. (See. �attached sketch)., We are a retired couple living on a modest income. I suggest that the Cost of $400.00 to $500.00 for installation is excessive in light of the benefits derived and outweigh benefits to be gained by the public. I respectfully request a variance so that I can have the cable line installed at a reasonable cost. Sincerely, John J. Since the Community Development Code for overhead wiring was written in 1987, this may explain why your neighbor has overhead lines. It should also be noted that if 545 Forsyth Lane rebuilds, undergrounding would be mandated based on the current code. It is the City of Edmonds' intent to underground at all reasonable opportunities to maintain and enhance the aesthetic nature of the community, and it is in our opinion that the $400 to $500 does not exceed the benefits derived by going underground.
