SIDE SEWER PERMIT REQUIREMENTS
1. Side sewer permits shall be posted at job -site and available to
inspector at time of inspection. Inspection during normal working
hours only. One (1) working day notice required. Side sewers
must be left uncovered until inspected. A water test is required I
2. Property owners can obtain a permit to install side sewers on
private property. Licensed side sewer contractors must be
employed -to construct side sewers in the City right-of-way.
Invasion into City right-of-way requires a separate permit.
3. --Th, e-side sewer contractor assumes full responsibility for each
installation for one (1) year.
'4. Trenches within City right-of-way must be restored to original
conditions. Street restoration fees shall be paid in advance
under a right-of-way permit. Contractors shall be resp'onsible for
right-of-way failure due to poor compaction of fill.
5. No down spouts, footing drains or floor drains can be connected to
a side sewer system.
6. Pea gravel is required for bedding when installing sewer lines
through other than granular soil.
7. Cleanouts at property line and at house will have risers installed
to within 12" of surface grade with removable cap.
8. Commercial establishments require a minimum of six inch (6") side
sewer line.
9. 'Side sewers may not be installed closer than.thirty inches (30")
to any structure.
10. Cleanouts are required at 30"-60" from each plumbing exit line and
at minimum intervals of 100' along sewer line run.
11. Side sewer lines must be laid 0 at a minimum grade of 2% (1.15 0)
and maximum grade of 100% (45
12. No turn in side sewer gre 50 (1/8 bend) is allowed
be Veen cleanout. All 90 turns must be constructed of a
45 (1/8 bend) and wye with removable cap for cleanouts.
13. No cleanout shall be paved over. If located in pavement, cast
iron lids will. be installed.
14. All connections will be of gasketed type. No solvent joints
unless prior approval is granted.

The City of Edmonds is currently engaging in a program to improve its
wastewater treatment system. One of the major parts of the program is
reducing the volume of flow into our treatment plant. A major item
contributing to this problem is the infiltration of stormwater runoff
from roofs, drains, etc. into our sanitary sewers.
A series of tests were completed by an independent engineering firm.
They pumped smoke into sewer lines and recorded where it was escaping,
thereby locating the stormwater infiltration sources.
Your property has been identified as having a roof drain connected to
the sewer and the City requires, per the Community Development Code,
Chapter 18.10, Section 18.10.030, that this problem be corrected.
Please contact myself or Everett Akau of our Water/Sewer Section by
July 24, 1987 to provide you with further information and to answer
your questions. Member of the staff will be glad to advise you as to
your best solution.
Your assistance in disconnecting this source is requested no later than
August 7, 1987.

The City of Edmonds is currently experiencing a serious sto�e
water problem. Our sewage wastewater treatment system is being
overtaxed by large volumes of storm water from roofs, drains,
driveways, and parking lots. If this water is not eliminated from
the system, the sewage treatment plant will require expansion much
sooner than it otherwise would.
A series of tests were completed, identifying your property
as one of the infiltration sources. This storm water must be
removed from the sanitary sewer system as soon as possible. The
attached drawings indicate several solutions to this problem, one
of which should be applicable to your property.
The City has established this as a top priority project, and
your cooperation is urgently needed. Please contact Dan Smith or
Jerry Hauth at 771-3202 for assistance prior to installation of
your modified system.
