Concealed spaces is not defined, however, includes areas such as crawl spaces, attics, and penthouse equipment rooms. (2-6 Exception # 4). However, design criteria for protection "outside the dwelling unit" requires thatiall non-living/non- storage areas be protected with "sprinkler coverage" as required for (UBC Standbrd 9-1/NFPA 13) systems. NFPA 13 only addresses that sprinklers located in elevator machine rooms shall be of ordinary- or intermediate -temperature rating (5-13.6.2). Explanatory material references ASIVIE A17.1, agLe!y Code for Elevators and Escalators, which requires (electrical) power shutdown in case of sprinkler activation; hence the requirement for a heat -detector controlled shunt trip and valve -controlled sprinkler head/electrical shutoff in elevator machine room and elevator pit/shaft. WA State Labor & Industries Elevator Section identifies shaft, hoistway, pit, and elevator machine room sprinkler protection conforming with NFPA 13 in commercial installations, that includes multi -family dwellings. Phase 1 recall and shunt trip is required in the machine room of commercial installations. A true "l 3 R" systems specifically excludes "elevator shaft" protection, but not "elevator machine room" protection. Review of sprinkler plans include requirement for machine room protection. The protection requirements specifically disallow exception to area protection due to the (mere) presence of electrical equipment. Uniform Fire Code-1997 1003.4 (1) - Elevator section does not require water shut-off valves in sprinkler machine rooms or shafts. Shunt trip power protection is automatic and provided by installation of a 135 degree heat detector control near the higher temperature fusing sprinkler head. Water application, therefore will not affect the energized electrical equipment in a progressively heated control space. WAC 296-96- 02277 In "true" UBC Standard 9-3/NFPA 13R systems, no protection is required within the elevator space. Fire suppression will be automatic in the elevator control room and control (butterfly) valving will not be required for manual initiation of the control room sprinkler in concert with the shutdown of energized electrical equipment. ASME A17.1.- 10 ' 2.2 (c) 3 states: "Means shall be provided to automatically disconnect the mainline power supply to the affected elevator prior to the application of water." (1) The department enforces this rule as follows: (a) When sprinkler systems are installed in an elevator hoistway, fixed temperature heat detectors, set only at 1350F, must.be located at the top of the hoistway. If sprinklers are installed in the machine room, the same rule applies to heat detectors in the machine room. If you install heat detectors, you must also install a smoke detector for elevator recall. The purpose of these heat detectors is to automatically disconnect mainline power to the elevator before water flows from any sprinkler associated with the elevator system. (b) Smoke detectors at the top of the hoistway shall not recall the elevatorto the bottom landing. (c) Heat detectors must be: (i) Located near each sprinkler head as required by NFPA 13; (ii) Considered only as an auxiliary function of elevator equipment; (iii) Identified as "elevator controls only - DO NOT TEST"; and (iv) Ceiling mounted. However, pit detectors, if installed, may only be used as a signaling device and wall -mounted if they are so designed. (v) Heat detectors are not required in pits provided the automatic sprinkler heads are installed in such a way that the water spray pattern does not spray higher than three feet above the pit floor with a spray pattern directed level and down. The shunt trip disconnect must be installed in the machine room or machinery space and it must be easily identifiable. (d) Power for the automatic disconnect control circuit must be derived from the load side of the elevator power main disconnecting means or from a 120 volt separate branch circuit. Circuit location must be identified on or next to the elevator disconnects. If a 120 volt separate branch circuit is used an illuminated visual device must be installed in the machine room adjacent to each elevator's disconnect. The purpose of this visual device is to indicate that power is available to the shunt trip activation mechanism. (e) All electrical equipment and wiring associated with shunt trip devices must conform to the applicable ANSI/NFPA 70. (0 The department does not require sprinkler shut-off valves.
