I inspected the sprinkler system for the whole building. 3 heads need to be added in the South side mechanical rooms on
all three floors. Hydro, head placement, bracing and spacing were OK else where.
The underground was also hydroed and checked OK
At final the underground and FDC will be flushed. I also asked for a brace on the riser in the doghouse.

Wheelock's Series MB Motor Bells propide a Vetter JPgineered..,,jLui
bell for fire and life safety alarm systIms. The Whdblock Series MB
Bells include higher dBA, low current draw, built-in trimplate for
semi -flush mounting, low frequency aluminum shells, and low RFI
noise. The motor for Series MB Bells is a dueable, high torque
permanent magnet motor selected for its high performance and long
life.
These DC vibrating Series MB Motor Bells are offered in 6" and 10"
shell sizes in both 12 and 24 VDC models.
Series RSSP Sync/Non-Sync retrofit plates are used in conjunction
with the Series MB Motor Bell when combination appliances are
required. The Series RSSP retrofit plates are available with either
Multi -Candela or single candela strobes and easily mount to a 4"
square or Wheelock SBL-2 backbox. All Series RSSP strobe
appliances meet or exceed the requirements of NFPA 72 (National Fire
Alarm Code), ANSI 117.1 (American National Standard for
Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities), ADA (Americans with.
Disabilities Act) and UL Standard 1971 (Signaling Devices for the
Hearing Impaired).
The Series RSSP retrofit plates may be synchronized when installed
with the Wheelock Series SM, DSM, Sync Modules or the PS-12/24-8
Power Supply with Wheelock's patented sync protocol. Wheelock's
synchronized strobes offer an easy way to comply with ADA
requirements concerning photo -sensitive epilepsy.

Listed foi Fire Protective Service. Shells shall be aluminum in 6"or 10" diameter. Sound output at 10 feet shall be 92 dBA. The
bells shall incorporate a permanent magnet motor and suppression circuitry to minimize RFI. They shall include a built-in
trimplate for semi -flush mounting to a standard 4" square backbox, or surface mounting to Wheelock's indoor BB backbox or
outdoor WBB backbox.
For bell strobe applications, retrofit plates Wheelock Series RSSP with Multi -Candela or Single Candela strobes shall be used.
All bell models shall be polarized for line supervision and shall have screw terminals for in -out field wiring of #12 to #18 AWG
wire. Operating voltage shall be nominal 24 VDC or 12 VDC. Finish on all models shall be red enamel.

Fire Alarm Systems
DESCRiPTION.
Wheelock's Weatherproof Strobe, Audible Strobe,
Audible Horn and Multitone Strobe appliances have an
extended temperature range of -31 *F to I 60*F (-35*C
to 66'C) that will satisfy virtually all outdoor and severe
environment applications. AJI strobes are Indoor/Outdoor
UL Standard 1638 Listed and rated for 75 candela on
axis @ -31*F (-35C) and 180 candela at 770F (25*C)
with low current draw.
The Wheelock Weatherproof Appliances are designed
for maximum performance, reliability, and cost
effectiveness while meeting or exceeding the latest
requirements of NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm Code),
UL Standard 1638 (Standard for Visual Signaling
Appliances), and UL Standard 464 (Standard for Audible
Signaling Appliances).
Series RSSWP Strobes, Series ASWP Audible Strobes
and Series AHWP Audibl6s may be synchronized when
used in conjunction with the Wheelock SM and DSM
Sync Modules or the PS-12/24-8 Power Supply with
Wheelock's Patented Sync Protocol. The Series MTWP
is a true 4-wire appliance. The strobe portion can be
synchronized as stated above. The multitone portion
cannot, but it can be connected to a coded fire alarm
system.
Weatherproof Strobe Series RSSWP
Is UL Standard 1638 approved for Indoor/Outdoor use.
The appliances use a Xenon flashtube with solid state
circuitry enclosed in a rugged Lexan@ lens to provide
maximum visibility and reliability for effective visual
signaling. The Series RSSWP mounts to a Series
WPS13B Weatherproof Backbox.
Weatherproof Audible Strobe and Audible Series
ASWP and AHWP
Is UL Standard 1638 and UL Standard 464 approved for
Indoor/Outdoor use and offer a field selectable choice
of continuous horn or temporal pattern (Code 3) when
constant voltage from the Fire Alarm Control Panel
(FACP) is applied. Additionally, the audible has three (3)
selectable dBA settings of 99, 95, and 90 dBA in both
tones and, when synchronized, may be silenced while
maintaining strobe activation, The Series ASWP mounts
to a WPBB Weatherproof Backbox while the Series AH
mounts to a WB13 Weahterproof Backbox.
Weatherproof Multitone Strobe and Multitone Horn
Series MTWP and MT-12/24
Is UL Standard 1638 and UL Standard 464 approved for
Indoor/Outdoor use and offers a field selectable choice
of 8 nationally and internationally recognized alerting
signals. Additionally, the audible has 2 installer select-
able sound output levels: Standard and high covering a
range (depending on selected signal) of 76-94 dBA
reverberant. The Series MTWP is a true 4 wire
appliance. The Strobe portion can be synchronized or
non -synchronized. The multitone (audible) portion
cannot be synchronized, but it can be connected to a
Coded fire alarm system. The Series MTWP and the
MT-12/24 mount to a series 1013 Backbox.

The 270 Series fire alarm pull station is for fire alarm installations in
schools, hospitals, factories, and industrial locations.
Available in both open and closed circuit designs and has a tamper
proof reset function. The station's die cast body is painted red, with
painted silver stripes. For replacement glass rods, order Catalog No.
270-GLR (pkg. of 20).
The 270 Series mounts on a 4" (102mm) square box with single
gang plaster cover. It may be surface mounted using the P-027193

The contractor shall furnish and install where indicated on the plans, the Model SK-5235 Remote Annunciator.
Module shall be of a LCD type with a 2X16 display. Module shall be capable of remote programming as well as
providing alarm, trouble information along with resetting of alarms and silencing of trouble and alarm conditions.
Module ID shall be programmed with a 4 position DIR The control shall be capable of supporting up to 6
supervised SK-5235. Module shall be designed to mount on a dual gang electrical box with 18 gauge to 14
gauge wire.

The system shall contain a fire alarm control panel to supervise and operate heat and smoke detection devices,
manual fire alarm devices, alarm notification devices and visual annunciators. The system shall also be capable
of monitoring for sprinkler supervisory and water flow conditions. The system must have a built in UL listed fire
communicator that can be enabled/disabled as needed on a per job basis. In addition, the system will sound

Description t
Wheelock's Series MB Motor Bells provide a better er�ginee-d
bell for fire and life safety alarm systems. The Wheelock S e, i efM BI
Bells include higher dBA, low current draw, built-in trimplate for
semi -flush mounting, low frequency alum inum,shel Is, and low RFI
noise. The motor for Series MB Bells is a durable, high torque
permanent magnet motor selected for its high performance and long
life.
These DC vibrating Series MB Motor Bells are offered in 6" and 10"
shell sizes in both 12 and 24 VDC models.
Series RSSP Sync/Non-Sync retrofit plates are used in conjunction
with the Series MB Motor Bell when combination appliances are
required. The Series RSSP retrofit plates are available with either
Multi -Candela or single candela strobes and easily mount to a 4"
square or Wheelock SBL-2 backbox. All Series RSSP strobe
appliances meet or exceed the requirements of NFPA 72 (National Fire
Alarm Code), ANSI 117.1 (American National Standard for
Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities), ADA (Americans with
Disabilities Act) and UL Standard 1971 (Signaling Devices for the
Hearing Impaired).
The Series RSSP retrofit plates may be synchronized when installed
with the Wheelock Series SM, DSM, Sync Modules or the PS-1 2/24-8
Power Supply with Wheelock's patented sync protocol. Wheelock's
synchronized strobes offer an easy way.to comply with ADA
requirements concerning photo -sensitive epilepsy.

The alarm appliances shall be Wheelock Series MB vibrating Motor Bells or approved equal. They shall be LIL Standard 464
Listed for Fire Protective Service. Shells shall be aluminum in 6" or 10" diameter. Sound output at 10 feet shall be 92 dBA. The
bells shall incorporate a permanent magnet motor and suppression circuitry to minimize RFI. They shall include a built-in
trimplate for semi -flush mounting to a standard 4" square backbox, or surface mounting to Wheelock's indoor BB backbox'or
outdoor.WBB backbox.
For bell strobe applications, retrofit plates Wheelock Series RSSP with Multi -Candela or Single Candela strobes shall be used.
All bell models shall be polarized for line supervision and shall have screw terminals for in -out field wiring of #12 to #18 AWG

DESCRIPTION.
Wheelock's Weatherproof Strobe, Audible Strobe,
Audible Horn and Multitone Strobe appliances have an
extended temperature range of -31'F to 150*F (-35'C
to 66*C) that will satisfy virtually all outdoor and severe
environment applications. AJI strobes are Indoor/Outdoor
UL Standard 1638 Listed and rated for 75 candela on
axis @ -31*F (-35*C) and 180 candela at 77*F (25*C)
with low current draw.
The Wheelock Weatherproof Appliances are designed
for maximum performance, reliability, and cost
effectiveness while meeting or exceeding the latest
requirements of NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm Code),
UL Standard 1638 (Standard for Visual Signaling
Appliances), and UL Standard 464 (Standard for Audible
Signaling Appliances).
Series RSSWP Strobes, Series ASWP Audible Strobes
and Series AHWP Audibles may be synchronized when
used in conjunction with the Wheelock SM and DSM
.Sync Modules or the PS-12/24-8 Power Supply with
Wheelock's Patented Sync Protocol. The Series MTWP
is a true 4-wire appliance. The strobe portion can be
synchronized as stated above. The multitone portion
cannot, but it can be connected to a coded fire alarm
system. I
Weatherproof Strobe Series RSSWP
Is UL Standard 1638 approved for Indoor/Outdoor use.
The appliances use a Xenon flashtube with solid state
circuitry enclosed in a rugged Lexan@ lens to provide
maximum visibility and reliability for effective visual
signaling. The Series RSSWP mounts to a Series
WPSB13 Weatherproof Backbox.
Weatherproof Audible Strobe and Audible Series
ASWP and AHWP
Is UL Standard 1638 and UL Standard 464 approved for
Indoor/Outdoor use and offer a field selectable choice
of continuous horn or temporal pattern (Code 3) when
constant voltage from the Fire Alarm Control Panel
(FACP) is applied. Additionally, the audible has three (3)
selectable dBA settings of 99, 95, and 90 dBA in both
tones and, when synchronized, may be silenced while
maintaining strobe activation. The Series ASWP mounts
to a WPBB Weatherproof Backbox while the Series AH
mounts to a WBB Weahterproof Backbox.
Weatherproof Multi tone Strobe and Multitone Horn
Series MTWP and MT-12/24
Is UL Standard 1638 and UL Standard 464 approved for
Indoor/Outdoor use and offers a field selectable choice
of 8 nationally and internationally recognized alerting
signals. Additionally, the audible has 2 installer select-
able sound output levels: Standard and high covering a
range (depending on selected signal) of 76-94 dBA
reverberant. The Series MTWP is a true 4 wire
appliance. The Strobe portion can be synchronized or
non -synchronized. The multitone (audible) portion
cannot be synchronized, but it can be connected to a
coded fire alarm system. The Series MTWP and the
MT-12/24 mount to a sedes 1013 Backbox.

Wheelock UL 1638 Strobes are designed to produce 30-62 flashes per minute over the Regulated Voltage Range. If used in
an indoor application, UL 1638 strobes must be operated at a minimum of 20 VDC to meet the NFPA-72 (1999) flash rate of 1
to 2 flashes pers second and ADA Guideline flash rate of I to 3 flashes per second.

The 270 Series fire alarm pull station is for fire alarm installations in
schools, hospitals, factories, and industrial locations.
Available in both open and closed circuit designs and has a tamper
proof reset function. The station's die cast body is painted red, with
painted silver stripes. For replacement glass rods, order Catalog No.
270-GLR (pkg. of 20).
The 270 Series mounts on a 4" (102mm) square box with single
gang plaster cover. It may be surface mounted using the P-027193
cast back box or the P-039250 steel back box. For weatherproof

The alarm horns shall be Gentex Model
GX91/GX93. The appliance shall be listed with
Underwriters Laboratories for use with Fire
Protective Signaling Systems and produce a
peak sound output of 90dBA or greater as
measured in an anechoic chamber. The
appliance shall be of solid-state construction
and be polarized to operate from 8-33 VDC with
a 15 milliamp current drain on the GX91 and a

I approved the relocation of the main FA control panel (flush -mounted) into the hallway at the East entry by the sprinkler
riser doghouse. There's not enough room to locate inside the doghouse. A smoke detector will be installed for FACP
detection at that location as required by OFC Standard 10-2. An annunciator panel remains at the main 6th Avenue entry.
The reason for relocation is due to concerns for the current City -approved location in the elevator machine room, and
whether Elevator Section will also accept for their final approval.
I'll correct the City plans and the approved set on -site. Would you like anything further?

.Fire Protection in UBC Standard 9-3/NFPA13 R System
Elevator Machine Rooms
NFPA 13R-1 999 system design requirements exclude "elevator shafts" and other "concealed
spaces that are not used or intended for living purposes or storage." Concealed spaces is not
defined, however, includes areas such as crawl spaces, attics, and penthouse equipment rooms.
(2-6 Exception # 4).
However, design criteria for protection "outside the dwelling unit" requires thatiall non-living/non-
storage areas be protected with "sprinkler coverage" as required for (UBC Standbrd 9-1/NFPA 13)
systems.
NFPA 13 only addresses that sprinklers located in elevator machine rooms shall be of ordinary- or
intermediate -temperature rating (5-13.6.2). Explanatory material references ASIVIE A17.1, agLe!y
Code for Elevators and Escalators, which requires (electrical) power shutdown in case of sprinkler
activation; hence the requirement for a heat -detector controlled shunt trip and valve -controlled
sprinkler head/electrical shutoff in elevator machine room and elevator pit/shaft.
WA State Labor & Industries Elevator Section identifies shaft, hoistway, pit, and elevator machine
room sprinkler protection conforming with NFPA 13 in commercial installations, that includes
multi -family dwellings. Phase 1 recall and shunt trip is required in the machine room of
commercial installations. A true "l 3 R" systems specifically excludes "elevator shaft" protection,
but not "elevator machine room" protection. Review of sprinkler plans include requirement for
machine room protection.
The protection requirements specifically disallow exception to area protection due to the (mere)
presence of electrical equipment. Uniform Fire Code-1997 1003.4 (1) -
Elevator section does not require water shut-off valves in sprinkler machine rooms or shafts.
Shunt trip power protection is automatic and provided by installation of a 135 degree heat detector
control near the higher temperature fusing sprinkler head. Water application, therefore will not
affect the energized electrical equipment in a progressively heated control space. WAC 296-96-
02277
In "true" UBC Standard 9-3/NFPA 13R systems, no protection is required within the elevator
space. Fire suppression will be automatic in the elevator control room and control (butterfly)
valving will not be required for manual initiation of the control room sprinkler in concert with the
shutdown of energized electrical equipment.

WAC 296-96-02277 How does the department enforce ASME requirements for sprinklers,
smoke detectors, and heat detectors in hoistways and machine rooms? ASME A17.1.- 10 ' 2.2 (c)
3 states: "Means shall be provided to automatically disconnect the mainline power supply to the
affected elevator prior to the application of water."
(1) The department enforces this rule as follows:
(a) When sprinkler systems are installed in an elevator hoistway, fixed temperature heat
detectors, set only at 1350F, must.be located at the top of the hoistway. If sprinklers are installed in
the machine room, the same rule applies to heat detectors in the machine room. If you install heat
detectors, you must also install a smoke detector for elevator recall. The purpose of these heat
detectors is to automatically disconnect mainline power to the elevator before water flows from any
sprinkler associated with the elevator system.
(b) Smoke detectors at the top of the hoistway shall not recall the elevatorto the bottom landing.
(c) Heat detectors must be:
(i) Located near each sprinkler head as required by NFPA 13;
(ii) Considered only as an auxiliary function of elevator equipment;
(iii) Identified as "elevator controls only - DO NOT TEST"; and
(iv) Ceiling mounted. However, pit detectors, if installed, may only be used as a signaling device
and wall -mounted if they are so designed.
(v) Heat detectors are not required in pits provided the automatic sprinkler heads are installed in
such a way that the water spray pattern does not spray higher than three feet above the pit floor with
a spray pattern directed level and down. The shunt trip disconnect must be installed in the machine
room or machinery space and it must be easily identifiable.
(d) Power for the automatic disconnect control circuit must be derived from the load side of the
elevator power main disconnecting means or from a 120 volt separate branch circuit. Circuit location
must be identified on or next to the elevator disconnects. If a 120 volt separate branch circuit is used
an illuminated visual device must be installed in the machine room adjacent to each elevator's
disconnect. The purpose of this visual device is to indicate that power is available to the shunt trip
activation mechanism.
(e) All electrical equipment and wiring associated with shunt trip devices must conform to the
applicable ANSI/NFPA 70.
(0 The department does not require sprinkler shut-off valves. However, where they are installed,
they must be located in an accessible place outside the hoistway, machine room or machinery space
with their handles placed at no more than 6 feet above the floor.
(g) Emergency return units must be disabled when the shunt trip is activated.
(2) The department must approve alternative methods used to achieve ASME Al 7.1 — 102.2 (c)
(3) prior to, installation.

I witnessed flush of FDC line today & signed connection test papers.
I signed test papers for underground hydro, and flush for you.
I witnessed and signed off sprinkler placement and piping hydrostatic test.
I provided correction notice to install a head in a storage closet in the common entry area under the north stair.
I told them no shut-off valve in the elevator equipment room was required -we'll talk about that...
