SUBJECT: PLUGGED SEWER LATERAL - 615 MAIN STREET
On March 19, 1985, 1 received a call regarding a plugged
sewer at 615 Main St. Roto-rooter had already attempted
cleaning the line and hadileft. Due to an inaccurate
side sewer drawing and uncertainty of where the blockage
was, I suggested that the resident could re -call the Roto-
rooter Company and that I could trace its route with a
pipe locator. This was done on March 20, and I determined
that the blockage was -in -the alley on City easement.
On March 21, the City Sewer Division dug up the area in
the alley and found that the 6" clay tile had been broken
at some time in the past by G.T.E. or P.U.D. cable
installers. A very poor concrete repair job had been
performed on the tile and as a result, the roots of a
nearby tree had penetrated the tile and spread about 4'
downstream causing almost total blockage. City crews
replaced approximately 6' of the 6" lateral from the
point of blockage to and including 6' of 8" main and
another 6" lateral, all suffering from root penetration
and poor joints. A representative from both P.U.D. and
G.T.E. were at the site on March 21 to see the section
of tile damaged in the past due to cable installation.
It is uncertain who performed the repair on the lateral
but it was the repair and the roots of a nearby tree
which caused the blockage. I recommend that this tree
on the northwest property corner of 623 Main St. be
removed to prevent further problems with the sewer main
and laterals due to its large root system in this vicinity.
