You are correct, they are the same. The difference on this end is that the duct
detectors protect HVAC ducts, and they are commonly denoted separately on panels
from smoke detectors located in open room spaces, but there are no heat detectors
to replace in this work. When I have a good count of the interested parties, I
will set up a walk-through and provide some basic specs. Thanks.

I took your company contact information from the MRSC small works roster
subcategory for Fire - Detection and Alarms in Facility Construction , Repair,
and Maintenance.
One of the buildings owned by the City of Edmonds is a public library, currently
operated by the Sno-Isle Library District. The existing fire alarm panel is a
Notifier, Model 4800, likely vintage circa 1982, and it needs to be replaced with
a new panel.
I have spoken with both our fire marshal and inspector and they agree that, as
part of the work, we should also replace the 24 ionization detectors and 21 smoke
detectors that are in the system. Otherwise we plan to leave equipment such as
annunciators, horns, and pull stations in place as is.
The system is zoned, and its wiring is run in conduit, so the job should be
essentially to replace the devices noted above and make the new equipment work
properly with the existing monitoring, done through Protection One.
I'd like to confirm your firm's interest in this job. Please respond to this e-

1.03 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A. Fire Alarm System Supplier and/or Subcontractor Requirements:
Comply with the requirements of Section 16700. Prepare shop drawings.

B. Contractor Requirements:
Submit shop drawings to the "Authority having Jurisdiction" (AHJ) as
defined in NFPA 72A. The AHJ for this project is the Local Fire
Marshal having jurisdiction. One copy of the above shop drawings
with this approval evidenced shall be included with the submittal
required by Section 16100.
In addition, the Contractor shall schedule periodic i ns flections by
the AHJ during the course of the installation and sha make any
corrections, deletions, relocations or additions to the system as
required for acceptance of the completed system by the AHJ. Not i fy
the Architect if any of these changes appear to justify a change in
contract price.
1.04 OPERATION
A. The fire alarm system shall be a zoned, non -coded, electrically
supervised system.

B. Operation of any initiation device shall immediately. cause all
visible and audible devices to operate a continuous march time signal
(at 65 db minimum throughout the frequently occupied spaces).
Auxiliary controlled devices shall operate until the alarm condition
is corrected and the system reset, except that an "alarm silence
switch" for use by authorized persons shall be provided to cancel the
evacuation alarms (trouble signal in alarm silence- position) but
shall not prevent subsequent alarms. At the same time the respective
zone light shall be illuminated on the annunciator, indicating the
source of the alarm.
C. All air handling systems of 2000 CFM rating or larger shall
automatically be shutdown immediately upon any alarm (NFPA 90A
Chapter 4).
D. A drill switch is to be provided at main control panel.
E. The system, including annunciation, and remote annunciation shall be
completely supervised to sound an audible and visual trouble signal
upon the occurrence of any open or grounded circuits except that
auxiliary control circuits (door holders, smoke dampers and fan
shutdown) and smoke detector remote indicator lights need not be
supervised. Sprinkler valves (tamper switches) shall be supervised
open. Audible and visual trouble signals shall be provided at the
main control panel annunciator and at the remote annunciator(s). A
trouble silence switch shall be —provided with "ring back" feature at
main control pa.nel.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 MANUFACTURE
All equipment shall be the product of a single manufacturer except
that certain individual components which are regularly used as part

equipment manufacturers: Edwards, Honeywell and Simplex are
approved.
2.02 MANUAL STATIONS
Manual stations shall be break glass non -coded type. Mounting shall

2.05 SMOKE DAMPERS (in air ducts) -
Refer to Division 15. Coordinate voltage and current charac-

2.06 HEAT DETECTORS

2.08 DUCT DETECTORS
A. Heat Detectors: Use spot type detectors similar to those specified
in 2.06.

B Smoke Detectors: Shall. be sampling ionization type for sensing of
products of combustion within the air stream of ducted fan systems.
The devices shall include necessary sampling tube extensions and
sensitivity adjustments for detection of products of combustion
across the width of the duct. The device shall function uniformly in
air velocities of 500 feet per minute through 3000 fpm. Visual
indication of normal and alarm/trouble shall be incorporated into the
exposed surface of the device. Provide a remote indicator light (see
2.03b) as required in Part 3 of this Section.
2.09 ANNUNCIATORS (MAIN PANEL AND REMOTE)
A. Shall consist of a panel containing indicator lights and controls on
a flush mounted enclosure. Provide weatherproof enclosure when
exposed to weather.
B. Trouble signal sounder and trouble signal light shall be incorporated
into the face of the panel or mounted in a separate adjacent panel.
C. Alarm annunciation (indicating type of alarm) and correlated zone
name shall be provided for each fire alarm system zone.
D. Provide key operated lamp test switch and 50% spare lamps.
E. Letter size shall be readily readable at 5'-0" from front (1/4"
minimum height).
2.10 FAN SHUTDOWN
Provide fan shutdown circuitry as required. Relays shall be provided
and connected under Section 16160 "Motor Controls" or 16920 "Motor
Control Centers" as applicable.
2.11 MAIN CONTROL PANEL
A. Shall incorporate power supply and all controls for the system except
as incorporated within the hereinbefore specified system components.
All components shall be mounted within a steel enclosure (or
enclosure assembly) with locked door(s) (provide 10 keys). Enclosure
shall be weatherproof when located outdoors. Door may incorporate a
transparent window for viewing indicator lights, etc. All components
of the panel requiring access for normal operation of the system
shall be accessible by use of a key, but without the use of tools.
Cabinet shall be flush or surface, mounted as indicated on the plans.
Battery backup system may be contained in a separate adjacent
enclosure.

mi nimum). 'Where smoke doors are released and duct dampers close
under power failure conditions, they are not required to be

panel is not powered by a generator during power failure, provide
sufficient batteries to power the system for the hours 'required by
local code being enforced.
C. Each zone module shall contain an indicating light, switch or other
means for isolating trouble signals to the faulted zone.
D. Provide visual indication in control panel of fan status. Provide
fan control switches when required by AHJ.
2.12 SHOP DRAWINGS

2.13 SPRINKLER SYSTEM MONITORING
A. Sprinkler system may be bidder design. The contractor shall be
responsible for coordinating the Fire Alarm System with the Sprinkler
System.
B. Provide detection and annunciation as required by the AHJ to
supervise PIV, OSY and gate valve positions, air pressure for dry
systems, and preaction systems.
C. Provide detection and annunciation of water flow, or pressure
activated alarms.
2.14 DRY OR GASEOUS FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM MONITORING
Provide detection and annunciation as required by the AHJ to
supervise dry chemical or gaseous fire suppression systems.
2.15 AUTOMATIC REPO RTING
No automatic reporting of alarms to the Municipal Fire Department is
required.
