SHELL GAS STATION SIGNS AT 9930 EDMONDS WAY
Dear Applicant:
I have reviewed the above building permit application for the Planning Division and it was found
that the following information, corrections, or clarifications will need to be addressed before
review can continue:
Sign C:
1. Please respond to the following items regarding Sign C (the price sign):
a.The existing price sign is nonconforming because pole signs are not permitted
within the Westgate Corridor. Per ECDC 17.40.040, a nonconforming sign cannot
be altered aside from normal maintenance to the sign or a change in the name of
the business. Since the existing price sign has external illumination, changing the
sign to have internal illumination as proposed would be in violation of the
nonconforming sign code. Therefore, the sign can remain as it is with external
illumination, but internal illumination is not allowed. Please redline plans to show
that there will either be no change to the illumination of this sign or that all
illumination of the sign will be eliminated.
b.The proposed color variation of the price sign causes it to qualify as a “reader
board sign.” Reader boards are conditionally permitted along the Westgate
Corridor, but only for public uses or places of public assembly. Since the gas
station is not a public use, a reader board sign is not allowed. The existing price
sign is not considered a reader board because the consistent blue and white
coloring causes it to look like one consistent sign. Please modify the proposed
price sign so that it does not qualify as a reader board (i.e. change it to have only
two different colors and to resemble a sign that does not have interchangeable
numbers).
Please redline plans or submit three sets of revised plans/documents (affected sheets only) with a
written response to each of the above items. Please make all submittals to the Development
Services Permit Coordinator Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to noon or 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. If
