On behalf of the Planning Division, I have reviewed the above sign permit application. Please
respond in writing to the following items:
1.Existing Signs. Please confirm if there are any other existing signs on-site. I am
only concerned with the carwash/coffee lot. Signage on the Grease Monkey site will
not limit the available sign square footage for the carwash/coffee site.
2.Drive-Thru Sign. This is for your information only. If the bird insignia is removed
from the drive-thru sign, it will not count towards the site’s available sign area. This
does not appear necessary (assuming there is no other signage on site), but it will
limit the total square footage of future additional signs.
3.Proposed Sign Area. Please provide the proposed sign area for the ‘hanging’ sign in
front of the building. The sign area should include the letters and the circle
containing the bird insignia. The schematic that you submitted shows the dimensions
as 121” x 43”, totaling 36+ square feet. I am hopeful that if you calculate the total
only
area of the letters and circular insignia (excluding the surrounding air space),
the total square footage will be significantly less. (The sign is considered to be a
projecting sign; and pursuant to Edmonds Community Development Code (ECDC)
20.60.040.) Its maximum size is 16 square feet.
4.Freestanding Pole Sign. The site is located within the Neighborhood Business zone.
Pole signs are not allowed within the zone, but monument signs are allowed subject
to specific conditions. Since the sign will not be illuminated, it appears that it could
meet the conditions, if it were redesigned as a monument sign. Refer to ECDC
20.60.020M

maximum height of a monument sign is 3 feet (since it is within the setback area).
