RE: PLAN REVIEW COMMENTS 2 FOR PLAN CHECK # 2009-0284
SIGN AT 22618 HIGHWAY 99

Thank you for your resubmittal for the signage at the Boohan Plaza. The area calculations indicate that
the proposed signage will satisfy that criterion. However, in the process of again reviewing the signage, I
went back to our archives to determine exactly what type of signage is allowed for the Boohan Plaza site.
In this case, what is allowed by the zoning code is not necessarily what is allowed at this particular site.
In 2000, the site owner took a package of signs to the Architectural Design Board (ADB) seeking
approval for a number of things including sign height and appearance. Sign height is no longer a concern
since the code was updated to provide more flexibility in locating signs on the fagade. However, sign
appearance is still dictated by the ADB's approval of ADB -2000-07.
As you can see from the attached staff report, ADB decision and elevation drawing, the signage for the
Boohan Plaza is to be non -illuminated and composed of thick plastic individual letters mounted to the
wall. The red lighted band at the top of the fagade is to provide illumination for the sign and the lettering
is to be fairly simple in order to create a uniform appearance for the site. The sign lettering needs to be a
single solid color to compliment the lighted band plus either black or white, as desired.
I realize that there are other types of signs currently at the site including internally illuminated channel
letters and cabinets. These signs were approved without full knowledge of the requirements of the sign
package for the site. Had the reviewers been aware of the sign package and the requirements for the site,
those signs would not have been approved. As we move forward and tenants change, new signs for the
site will comply with the sign package requirements in order to create a uniform appearance for the site as
the owner and Architectural Design Board had intended.
I apologize for the inconvenience of finding this information out now. I, too, was unaware of the
requirements of the Boohan sign package until I reviewed the ADB file yesterday. I am positive there are
options available for the Verizon/Cell Towns signage that will comply with both the height and area
requirements of the code as well as the design criteria of the Boohan sign package.
Please make all submittals to a Development Services Permit Coordinator, Monday through Friday, 8:00
am to 4:30 pm. If you have any questions, please contact me at (425) 771-0220.
Sincerely,
