Dear Mr. Arnelt,
I have reviewed the above building permit application for the Planning Division. Before I can sign off on
the permit, however, the following information needs to be clarified in a written response:
1. Sign Height: The proposed sign is located in the Downtown Activity Center and will have
interior illumination. According ECDC 20.60.020(L) and (M), the maximum height for a sign
with interior illumination in the Downtown area is 14 feet. As proposed, the sign would be 15
feet high. The code indicates that sign height is the vertical distance from the highest point on the
sign to the finished grade. Please revise the location of the sign to ensure that the top of the sign
is no greater than 14 feet above the finished grade at the sidewalk.
2. Sign Area: The signage is proposed to be 17.31 square feet on a fagade of more than 24 lineal
feet. While the total area calculation is satisfied, it appears that the rectangular area of the sign is
being calculated whereas it is possible to calculate individual letter areas and sum those for a
channel letter sign. This calculation would reserve some square footage if additional signage is
anticipated in the future.
