DOUG'S LYNNWOOD MAZDA —SHOWROOM EXPANSION SPECIAL INSPECTION LETTER, PROJECT NO.
BLD2019-0120
Dear Doug:
Golder Associates Inc. (Golder) performed geotechnical construction observation for Doug's Lynnwood Mazda
Showroom Expansion for the existing Mazda Dealership located at 22130 Highway 99 in Edmonds, Washington.
The work was performed in accordance with the scope of work dated April 14, 2018. Golder provided
geotechnical inspection services between September 5, 2018 and June 27, 2019. During our special inspection,
Golder observed the following components of construction:
■ Footing subgrade inspection
■ Density testing of backfill materials
■ Laboratory testing of backfill materials
Based on our involvement with the project, these components were observed by Golder were completed in
general accordance with the approved project specifications and drawings. Observations were recorded in our
daily field reports. The daily reports are attached as Attachment 1 and associated laboratory tests are included as
Attachment 2. Please contact us should any additional information be required.

FOUNDATION COMPACTION TESTING:
Golder was requested onsite to assess condition of subgrade soils within a foundation trench in native gravelly sand. A'/z-inch
fiberglass T-Probe was used to check the subgrade in the area indicated in Figure 1. The native cut was approximately 11/2 feet
below adacent grade and approximately 31/2 feet in width. A majority of the subgrade trench was generally firm and is suitable for
foundation support.
There were two areas with silt subgrade soils about 3 to 4 feet in length where the t-probe was inserted to a depths ranging from 5
to 14 inches. Shane, Wilcox's site supervisor, was informed that the material in these areas needed to removed and replaced with
properly placed structural fill. These areas are shown in Figure 1.

FOUNDATION COMPACTION TESTING:
Golder was requested to assess condition of subgrade areas that were previously checked on 9-5-2018. Areas of soft/loose
subgrade soils were identified during the 9-5-18 site visit. The contractor removed the soft/loose soils and Golder checked the
overexcavated areas using a'/ -inch fiberglass T-Probe in the areas shown in blue and red in Figure 1. The exposed subgrade
soils in these areas were generally firm and were considered suitable for foundation support.

FOUNDATION COMPACTION TESTING:
Golder was requested to assess condition of subgrade areas that were previously excavated. Golder used a '/2-inch diameter steel
T-probe to check footing subgrade conditions. Footing subgrade generally consisted of moist, dense, silty sand with gravel and
allowed less than 3" of penetration using the T-probe. Based on the field observations, the subgrade is considered suitable for
supporting the anticipated footing loads.

Golder arrived onsite and spoke with Mike Sawyer with ICI. Fill placement was taking place in the nothwest portion of the bulding.
Golder used a'/Z inch diameter fiberglass T-probe to check the footing subgrade compaction. Portions of the site were filled to
grade and two feet of additional fill was placed in the west portion of the fill placement area in 12-inch thick loose lifts and was
compacted using a CAT 315FL mounted hoe pack using the moist, silty sand with gravel that was stockpiled onsite. Fine grading
was done using a Hitachi Zaxis 30OLC with an excavator bucket and the fill was compacted using a vibratory plate compactor.
Golder then used a'/2 inch diameter fiberglass T-probe to check footing subgrade fill compaction. The footing subgrade checked
was firm and yielded less than inch to the T-probe and was found to be suitable for supporting the anticipated footing.
The subgrade generally consisted of moist, dense, silty sand with gravel and was firm and unyielding to the T-probe. Based on the
field observations, the subgrade was found to be suitable.

Golder arrived onsite and spoke with Wade, ICI. The contractor had placed several feet of backfill using on site sourced silty,
sand with some gravel occasional cobbles. The backfill had been placed against the NE corner of the stormwater vault,
approximately 45 x 14 linear feet along the north wall headed west, and 35 x 20 linear feet along the east wall headeded south
and around the 4 type 11 storm drain manhole structures to the east. Golder observed the contactor complete compaction of the
final lift of the day using a CAT 315FL mounted hoe pack, a CAT CB24B double drum vibratory roller, and a jumping jack against
the vault walls and manhole structures. The compacted material was firm under foot and apeared to be close to optiumum
moisture content. Golder used a'/2 inch diameter steel T-probe to check the compacted fill for penetration. All areas checked
were frim and yielded no more than about 1 inch to the T-probe.
Golder walked and checked previoulsy placed backfill south of the vault and north of the main building wall. The several feet of
material was firm and yielded about 1-2 inches below about 1 inche of surfucal mud caused by the recent rains.
Based on our observations and checks using the soil T-probe the backfill appered to be suitable for support of the anticipated
asphalt parking area loads.
Golder will return tomorrow, Tuesday, December 12 to collect a representative soil sample for Modified Proctor analysis for
nuclear/moisture density testing of future placed backfill soils.

Golder arrived onsite and spoke with Wade with ICI. The contractor had placed about 1.5 feet of fill in two lifts over the stormwater
vault in an approximately 120' L x 50' W area. Golder observed the compaction of the final lift of the day with a CAT CB24B
double drum vibratory roller. The fill generally consisted of moist, dense, silty sand with gravel. Three density tests were taken on
the fill with a Troxler 3440 nuclear densometer. Based on the field observations, the mentioned subgrade was found to be suitable
for supporting the anticipated asphalt parking area loads or additional fill placement.
ICI previously compacted the area in the northwest area west of the concrete building footings. The compacted material was
observed to be pumping when walked on in some areas. ICI will leave the material alone to moisture condition before placement
of any more material.
ICI will place more material between the vault and the building if the weather permits in the following days.

DENSITY TEST RESULTS
Density testing was performed using a Troxler 3440 nuclear densometer. (Note: All references to test depths are from existing
nearby grades.) The results of our density testing indicated that compaction of the tested soil was in general accordance with the
plans and specifications (at least 95% of maximum dry density: ASTM D-1557 for pavement and structural subgrades). Density
test locations are shown on the attached plans.

Golder arrived onsite and spoke with Wade with ICI. The contractor had excavated for, installed, and backfilled about 30 feet of
storm drain piping along the southeast side of the new sales building. The approximately 2 to 4 feet deep trench was backfilled in

FOUNDATION COMPACTION TESTING:
Golder was requested to assess condition of subgrade for the curblines circled in figure 1. Golder representative, Max Rossiter,
noted that the curbline subgrade consisted of native moist, dense, gravelly silty sand in all areas except in the northwest corner of
the site (outlined in figure 1). Native gravelly silty sand material was placed up to about 8" in thickness in this area. All curbline
areas were covered with an approximately 2"-thick leveling course (Fgure 2).
Golder used a 1/2 -inch diameter fiber -glass T-probe to check footing subgrade conditions. The native subgrade material and
leveling course were firm and unyielding to the T-probe. A nuclear density gage was used to test for relative compaction of the fill
in the northwest corner (figure 3).
The nuclear density gage showed that the fill was compacted to approximately 82.5% and 94.0% relative density on the west and
east side of the curb peninsula, respectively. Golder informed the site foreman. The contractor proceeded to recompact the fill and
leveling course with a vibratory hand compactor.
After recompaction, the nuclear density gage showed that the fill was compacted to approximately 95.1 % and 96.7% relative
density on the west and east side of the curb peninsula, respectively. Based on the field observations, the subgrade is considered
suitable for supporting the proposed curb structure.
