INTRODUCTION ;J Estate Homes, Inc. of Mill Creek, Washington requested Merit Engineering, Inc. to conduct a geotechnical engineering investigation at the site of a proposed 10' x 30' addition to a single family residence in Edmonds, Washington. The site is located at 714 Edmonds Street and bounded to the north, south, east, and west by residential housing. The project area and vicinity is shown in Figures I and 2 and the locations of the tests in Figure 2a in the Z1. 0: `1z Appendix. ln� The objective of this study was to investigate the subsurface soil conditions at the subject ca property, derive conclusions, and provide geotechnical engineering recommendations for the a M �r proposed building's foundation design. ma 0. m 2. SCOPE C- > Z'' The scope of work for this study included: o-n Conduct a visual site reconnaissance. Conduct 2 Dynamic Cone Penetration (DCPI) tests to maximum depth of 17Y m m ra 0 6 where refusal was encountered. CK Perform engineering analysis. m 0: Prepare this geotechnical engineering report addressing the followings: ;a (1) surface conditions, Z. (2) subsurface conditions, (3) surface and groundwater conditions, and V5 Recommendations for: Z1, (4) pipe pile foundation design parameters. m DCP test consists of driving a 10 cml (1.4- diameter) cone into the ground, The cone is attached to steel rods and driven by a 35 pound hummer with 15' free fall. SITE INVESTIGATION 3.1 Surface Conditions The proposed building site is Incated at 714 Edmonds Street in Edmonds, Washington. The site is relatively flat with a gentle slope up to the east of the site. The majority of the site is z occupied by a single-family residence — the test area is on the west side of the residence and :1 0 M is covered with grass. =i 'T. M 3.2 Subsurface Conditions m 0, No soil samples were collected during this investigation. We visually observed soft, moist, 01 0 r, black organic peat at the surface of the site, extending to a depth of approximately two feet. m This was evidenced by an excavation exposing an electrical conduit. The black peat was also C found adhering to the penetrating rods of the Dynamic Cone Penetration Device to the depth 0) 0 n, 'n �U f refusal, when a material of higher density was encountered. m m 3.3 Surface and Groundwater Conditions 0 0 rn�' We did not observe any surface water or groundwater on the site during our site investigation CO) m m on November 15, 2002. M 3.4 Geologic Background z The project area is located in the Northern Puget lowlands. This area was invaded by glacial Cal z ice at least three times during the Pleistocene Epoch, about 1.6 million to 10,000 years ago. 0 4. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS ;'Y� We conclude, based on this investigation, that a pile foundation is required and the site is suitable for the proposed project from the point of view of geotechnical engineering if the r mmendations in this report are followed. eco — — — ----- ------------- - - -- - -------- �=Merit Engineering Inc. -2- 4.1 Foundation Design Parameters We recommend pile foundation in the area of the proposed addition. 'We recommend 4' steel pipe driven into refusal for the pile foundation. The refusal depth of driving pipe pile is approximately 17' to 18'. The allowable capacities of the 4- pipe piles are 15 kips (thousand pounds) for vertical compression. Z 0 All perimeter footings sho uld be at least 18 inches below the final outside grade for frost 0 m protection. The analysis should be based on a near crustal event having an assumed magnitude of 6.5 and occurring directly, below the site. For such an event, SDCLU allows use of a minimum value of horizontal peak Z 0 _J ground acceleration of 0. 17g (g is acceleration due to gravity) for glacial till soil. This value m is considered to be reasonable for engineering design at northwest Washington area. "n, Therefore, we recommend using a minimum value of, horizontal peak ground acceleration of ai M 0. 17g for the bedrock at the site. The piles were installed on December 21", 2001 The piles are 4' diameter, hollow steel pipe�s with sectional lengths of 10.5'. A steel coupler connects the sections together. The piles were driven into the ground with an 850-pound impact hammer. As the driving time ofthepile exceeded 16 seconds perinch, the bearing capacity ofthe soil was considered greater than 40 kips and pile driving was stopped. A perforated pipe with a pump inside was located near the middle of the site. The peat typically extended to a depth of W-20', where harder material was encountered and driving slowed incrementally - until pile refusal. Obstructions such as possible rocks or bard soil layers that would alter the 0 rate of pile driving were, noted (see Table 3, pile number 6), but rarely encountered. 0 Fn In addition to observing the pile installation, Merit also observed the installation of top plates C G) K (a , in 0.
