The applicant should indicate where excavated materials needed for backfill will be

inappropriate for storage of such materials for reasons of slope stability, drainage,
protection of natural vegetation, etc.
A drainage plan for the site is not presented as such. Elem ents which are typical of a

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Johnson:
As requested, we reviewed the referenced plans, the current site conditions, and our prev ious letters and reports

for this project. The purpose of our review was to provide our opinion and

A representative of Terra Associates visited the site on F ebruary 209 2003, and made observations of the
southwest corner of the residence.
We understand that the current project involves the removal o f a small concrete patio slab and the resupport, of

V
Based on our review of the existing site, conditions, our previous boring logs in the vicinity of the site, and plans,
it is our opinion that the proposed supplemental support of the deck using two-inch diameter pipe piles is
suitable. The house is constructed on soils that have moved in the past and are loose. No significant bearing
layer has been identified within the upper 50 feet of the site soils; therefore, we expect the capacity of the pipe
piles will be developed primarily from skin friction and with little end bearing contribution.
We understand that deck columns will carry loading on the order of four kips. To obtain the pile capacity that is
needed for support of the deck, the driving criteria on the project plans is suitable. The pipe should be driven to
ute of
refusal or to a depth of 25 feet. Refusal is defined as less than one inch of movement over one min
continuous driving with a 90-pound hammer surcharged with the operator's weight. The recommended allowable
:4 Till
load for two-inch diameter pipe piles installed in this manner is two kips. The pipe piles should be load tested to
two times the allowable load to verify that the required design capacity has been achieved.
M
In addition to the new support for the deck, a portion of the patio slab will be removed and replaced. We 01
recommend that the slab subgrade be compacted to a firm and stable condition prior to construction of the new
slab. If the soils are too wet to compact, Portland cement can be tilled into the soils to dry the soils and increase
Z'
their strength characteristics upon compaction.
Terra Associates should observe pipe pile installation and load testing to verify recommended design capacity
bgrade prior to re-cofistruction to
has been achieved. We should also observe the condition of the patio slab su
verify the subgrade is firm, stable, and suitable for slab support.
All recommendations and discussions in our previous reports remain applicable to this project.
We trust the information presented is sufficient for your current needs. If you have any questions regarding our
recommendations or require additional information, please call.
Sincerely yours,

We understand you are preparing for construction of the Johnson Residence in the spring of 1993
on Lot 8 at Lorian Woods. We have examined copies of the plot and the grading plans, building
elevations, and a foundation plan that you provided us. We understand these plans are equivalent
to those that vaill be submitted to the City for permit. With regard to excavations, design soil
stresses, drainage, and other geotechnical considerations, the plans, in our judgment, conform with
the geotechnical recommendations in the documents reftrenced abovm
in our opinion, aU other aspects of the geotechnical engineer's declaration required by Section
19.05.040 of Ordinance No. 2661 are covered by the initial paragraphs of the second reference.
Ibis letter affirms the declarations and recommendations in both references.
We have prepared a location plan for the test pits we excavated on this lot in April 1991. Test pits
logs have been prepared also and are presented in Table A. Both documents arc attached to this
letter. Please note that we recently sounded water levels in the standpipes in TP-1 and TP-2. Both
are dry, as they were in May, 1991.
