Intertek Testing Sorvices NA Limitod/Warnock Hersey (Intertek) has conducted a testing program at the request of
Regal Aluminum Products (Regal) on their Regal Railing System in accordance with the 2000 International
Building Code (18Q, Section 1714 — Preconstruction Load Tests. The raiting system was evaluated for the ability
to resist the loads specified in the IBC, Section 1607.7.1 — Handrails and guards in general accordan.ce with the test
procedure outlined in the ICBO-ES Acceptance Criteria AC 174, Section 4.2 — Guardrail sYstem: (Guard and
Handrail) Structural Testing, Evaluation of the base plato counection to the. sTxacture is not within t1h: scope of this
test program.
Tim Barzilay of Intertek selected test samples at random from inventory on May 5, 2003,
Testing was conducted at the Regal Aluminum Products manufacturing facility in Delta, PC between May 28 and
June 2, 2003,
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Regal Railing System is a component guardrail system manufactured in Delta, BC. The system incorporates a
2.25" square aluminum post and a 2" wide rail. Dic drawings are included iv Appendix A. Assembly details are
included in Appendix B. The variations of the system tested are as fol.lows:
• Picket system
• Glass infill panel
• Glass or Picla-tsystem liging T14A atrach;nout h;-1Gket6
• Glass or Picket system using Wall Brackets
TEST PROGRAM
One worst -case guardrO systern test specimen of each configuration was. constructed as described in the assembly
information in Appendix B. The picket and glass infldl systems consisted of two posts at maximum spacing, top and
bottom rails with infill and all components and all connecting hardware with the posts secured to a steel, mounting
beam. The UAB bracket system and Wall Bracket system consisted of top and bottom rails with inflA and all
components and all connecting hardwaiv where the rail bracket was secured to a structural steel post.
-Testing was conducted in the following order:

2. Uniform Load Test
3. Concentrated Load Test
Tests specimens were loaded at a rate to achieve the specified loads between 10 seconds and 5 minutes, The

characteristic was previously evaluated and found in compliance.
In -MI Load Test
A load of 125 pounds was applied over a one: square foot area using a 12" x 12" plywood panel. This load in
the code specified load in IBC Clause 1607-71-2 Components of 50 lbs raultiplied by a factor of 2.5 as
specified in MC Clause 1714.3.1 Test Procedure. The Glass in -fill panel was tested to a safety factor of 4 in
accordaDce with IBC Section 2407 151ass in Handrails andguards, Clause 2407.1.1 toads. The 24 hour load
duration portion of this clause was not followed, as Guards are not designed to resist long term loading. The
system was evaluated and Ft worst casc loading and deflection scenario was decided, Afte.T roleasc of the load,
the system wits evaluated for failure, any evidence of disengagements of any component and visible cracks in
any component.

Uniform Lond Test
The top rail Of the guardrail system was subjected to two separate; tests Where a maximum equivaleat aniform
load of 125 plf waq applied vertically and horizontally. The 'vertical load was applied by guspending a mass
at regular intervals. The horizontal load was applied using third point loading. The third point load apptied
wag calculated to impose an equivalent moment to a 125 Plf uniform load. After release of the load, the
System was evaluated for failure, any evidence of disengagements of any component and visible. cracks in any
component.
Concentrated Load Test
The top rail of the guardrail system was subjected to threc separate tests where a concentrated load of 500 lbs
was applied at the following locations:
Vertically at the Centre of the guardrail — deflection measurements were notrecorded,
Horizontally at the Centre of the guardrail — deflection measurements recorded.
Horizontally at the top rail adjacent to the rail post connection to verify tbo connection capacity —
deflection measurements recorded where the, load was transferred to a system post.
Deflections, where recorded, were determined at the specified load of 200 tbs. As no deflection criteria is
included in the WC, the deflection criteria noted in ICBO — ES AC174, Clause 4.2.4 Concentrated Load Test,

1. The. sum of the rail (guard) height, h (In Inches), divided by 24 plus the effective rail (guard) length,
I (in inches), between the vertical supports divided by 96, or (h/24 + 1196), Where the effective rail
(guard) length is the distance between the edges of the posts. The deflection at the midspan of the
top Tail (guard) is measured relative to the Centre of the two posts (i.e,, it does not include. post
deflecdon).
2. The effective post height (vertical support) divided by 12, or (h/12). Where the effcctive post
(vertical support) height is the distance from top -of -post to first point of support or fiTst connector
-----of-thepost tothesupporting rim joist -(in -inches).
Absolute deflections were measured and tire deemed to be conservative.
Following deflecti.or) measurements of the. Horizontal load adjacent to the post, the load was increased to
determine the failure point.
