recommendations for replacing the footings of an existing deck at the 16608 76h Avenue W.

A site visit and surface reconnaissance was performed at the site on August 12, 2004. An

existing two -level deck was observed at the top of a relatively steep slope. Columns

supporting the deck were founded on concrete cylinder footings embedded in the slope soils

near the top of the slope. Some of the column supports for the deck were not vertical,

apparently due to downslope movement of their foundations. An examination of one of the

footings revealed that its base was exposed and a void. was present beneath the footing,

causing loss of support. Hand probing of the near -surface soils adjacent to the footings
revealed very loose soil conditions with probe penetrations ranging from 21/2 to over 3 feet.

The scope of our investigation was confined to foundations of the existing deck at the
residence at the above -referenced location. Our scope did not include an investigation of the
stability of the overall slope or the existing house foundation.

Conclusions and Recommendations

creep movement of loose to very loose soils beneath the footings. To avoid such failure in the
future, a deep foundation system is recominended, embedded hi underlying dense soil layers.
A pin pile foundation system appears to be the most suitable for this application due to the
difficult access and the portable equipment, which can be used.
Based on our surface reconnaissance and limited hand probing in the vicinity of the footings, it
is anticipated that pin piles will reach refusal at depths of 5 to 10 feet below the ground
surface. No subsurface investigation was perforined. for this study, however, and therefore the
actual refusal depth may vary significantly. In addition, it may be required to modify the pile
layout if boulders or other obstructions are encountered duling driving.

For the relatively low loads required, an appropriate material for the pin piles would consist of
2-inch-diameter (2.375-inch O.D.) schedule 80 steel pipe. Pipe segments are typically 3 to 5
feet in length and are joined by threaded couplings, slip couplings or butt welds as they are
driven.
Pin piles are driven to refusal by means of a pneumatic hammer, with refusal defined as
penetration of less than I inch per minute during continual driving under the combined body
weight and the wei of the hammer. The hammer should weigh at least 90 pow -ids. After
gilt
reaching the refusal depth, the piles are cut off to the design elevation. A structural connection
can be made to a pile cap, if desired, by welding a reinforcing bar to the pile or by cutting and
splaying apart the top of the pile.
Allowable axial load capacities of individual pin piles are presented in the table below. The
values assume properly installed, 2-inch diameter steel pipe piles driven to refusal, as defined
above. A qualified geotechnical engineer should be present during all pile driving
operations to verify the bearing capacity. Uplift capacity can only be assumed if the piles are
designed to resist tension by the use of threaded couplers or butt welds. Pin piles will not
provide significant lateral resistance and the lateral capacity is generally neglected. If
required, battered piles can be installed to provide lateral resistance.

In addition, we designed footings for a 3 pile and 2 pile configuration, details for both of the
