2004, and November 30, 2004, to observe the geotechnical aspects of selected portions of project
construction. Daily field reports prepared for each site visit are attached.
ZZA's primary emphasis was to observe the removal of unsuitable soils and the

placement of structural fill within the building footprint. Our firm also observed the condition of
the bearing soils exposed in theTboting excava tions. This included the removal soft, unsuitable
soils in the northern and southeastern portion of the building. Based on the results of our

observations, it appeared that unsuitable soils were removed from the building area as

recommended. The results of the in -place density testing of the structural fill placed within the
building footprint indicated that this structural rill was compacted to at least 95 percent of the
maximum dry density determined in accordance with the ASTM D-1557 in accordance witli our
geotechnical recommendations. Hand probing of the footing subgrade generally revealed firrn
and unyielding conditions. Footing subgrade areas requiring additional preparation were
identified to Covenant Construction.

A site visit was made at the request of the client to observe footing excavations for the proposed
building. Upon arrival, we observed that a majority of the building footings had been excavated down to
bottom of footing elevation. Pat Carroll directed us to the north footing line where he had overcxcavated a
section of footing down to the previously placed quarry spalls and 2-inch crushed rock. Pat infon-ned us that he
was currently approximately 4 feet below the bottom of the footing elevation at this location. We informed Pat
of our recommendations for backfill of this section of trench.
1. We recommended that the width of the footing excavation be equal to the depth of overexcavation, if
structural fill is to be used to backfill the excavation.
2. We informed Pat that CDF could be used to backfill the footing excavations back up to bottom of
footing grade. We informed Pat that if CDF were used, the footings would not have to be widened to match the
overexcavation depth.
Pat informed us that he would use CDF to backfill this section of footing line. We were infort-ned that
we would be needed to observe the remaining footing excavations on 11/30/04.

A site visit was made at the request of the client to observe footing excavations for the proposed
building. Upon arrival, we hand probed the entire footing excavations for the proposed building using a V2 inch
diameter steel probe. We generally found the footing subgrade soils to consist of native silty sand and silty sand
structural fill material. Hand probing revealed the subgrade to be generally firm aild unyielding and adequate
for the design bearing capacity of 2,500 psf, in our opinion. However, we encountered several small isolated
areas of softer soils within the footing lines. We marked these areas with paint and recommended to Pat that the
areas be overexcavated down approximately 12-inclies, ' We recommended that the excavations be backfilled
with on site 2-inch clean crushed rock. Pat informed us that lie would backfill tile small excavations with the
crushed rock.
Pat informed us that CDF would be poured today in the footings areas mentioned in field report #13.
Pat also infon-ned us that he was going to pour CDF in the southeast corner footing area. We had observed this
comer to have been overexcavated approximately 3 feet, down to firm and unyielding soils.
We observed one section of footing that had been left unexcavated due to accessibility to equipment.
Pat informed its that he would dig this remaining section today or tomorrow. We will return to observe this
remaining section of footing trench.

A site visit was made at the request of the client to observe the remaining footing excavations for the
proposed building. Upon arrival, we hand probed the portion of footing excavation which had previously been
unexcavated to allow construction traffic to entire the building area. The section of footing was located at
approximately grid line F and between grids 3 and 5. Hand probing this section of footing revealed soils that
appeared to be fin-n. unyielding, and adequate for the design bearing capacity of 2,500 psf, in our opinion. We
observed that the contractor had placed I inch to 1 V4 inch crushed rock in much of the footing excavations to
protect the subgrade from rain. We recommended that the footing excavations be free of all loose debris and
standing water prior to pouring concrete.
