permit. The homeowner will remove the framing and door for the existing closet if this is. what
is required to obtain A permit. Please see the attached floor plan.

I do not wish to delay the permit process as we have a plumb eir scheduled to begin working on

the project. However, I am requesting a written explanation from the Building Division on how

The home was classified as a four bedroom home when purchased in June of 2003 (See enclosed

appraisal forms). The fourth bedroom was located in the basement. The basement with the
exce tion of the drywall in the hallway and ceiling in the bath/laundry room was completely

.'finished. The bedroom in the basement (noted as a bonus room in the floor plan submitted o*n
October 24, 2005)'alread.y contained atloset. The initial remodel plan submitted to the City of
2005 would have ecreased the width of the existing closet by

or repairing existing walls.

bedroom, the homeowner would have to make changes to the foundation and possi bly move the
deck attached to the upper story of the home. This could only be done at a substantial cost to the
homeowner. The removal of the closet and subsequent loss of the potential bedroom in the
basement to meet current building code will decrease the resale value of the home.
My husband and I have found th e permit process with the City of Edmonds to be extremely

frustrating. We have received conflicting information from many of the individ ' als we have
spoken to in the Building Division.. The permit process an d the hours of your department make it
very difficult. for a homeowner to comply with the law and obtain a building permit.
Again, I do not wish to delay the issuing of the permit to obtain the above requested information.
Please issue the permit for the revised remodel plan as expeditiously as possible.
