Geotechnical 1. We are requesting a letter from the geotechnical engineer recommend-Ing lateral earth pressures on retention structures due to earthquake motions- This comment was included in the p revious review letter, however a letter from the geotechnical engineer was not included in the second submittal. Per the response from the Engineer -of -Record, the wall has been designed in accordRuce with the geotechnical report. We are unable to locate recommendations for the lateral earth pressures due to earthquake motions in the geotechnical report. It does not appear that seismic lateral earth pressures have been included in the structural calculations on pages 3 dirough 6. This may affect the structural design of the retaining walls. Please verify. See IBC Section 1,802.23(l) and ASCE 7-02 Sections 9.14.7.2. 1 and 9.7.5. 1 - I The site plan shows limited clearance between the new retaining wall and the pool wall, including overlaps between the new wall and the southeast and southwest comers of the pool. Per the response from the Engineer -of Record, there, -is no interference at the southwcstc.omer, and shoring of the pool structum will be provided during construction. Note that the structural drawings still indicate the southwest corner of the pool will interfere with the new wall. Sections A/Sl and B/Sl indicate that granular backfill shall be placed behind the new retaining wall. Per page 10 of the geotechnical report by Nelson Geotechnical Associates, Inc., dated July 27, 2005, an 18-Inch wide zone of clean granular material wrapped in filter fabric is recommended behind the retaining wall. Per the response from the Engineer -of -Record, the structural drawings have been updated. with this information, however it does not appear to be included 'in the drawings. This information should be -included on Sheet Sl - 4. Page 3 of the structural calculations indicate that the retaining wall shown 'in Section B/S I is restrained against sliding- The stability check for sliding states that the footing is restrained and appears to indicate the evaluation of sliding resistance has not been performed. Section B/S I now includes a key to provide resistance against sliding, however calculations for sliding resistance have not been performed. Calculations should be provided substantiating that the wall has sufficient resistance to sliding. See IBC Section 1806- 1. 5. Page S of the structural calculations indicate that the retaining wall shown in Section A/S I is restrained against sliding. The stability check for sliding states that the footing is restrained and appears to indicate the evaluation of sliding resistance has not been performed. Section AIS I now includes a key to provide resistance against sliding, however calculations for sliding resistance have not been performed. Calculations should be provided substantiating that the wall has sufficient resistance to sliding- See IBC Section 1806. 1. Corrections and comments made during the review process do not relieve the project applicant or designer from compliance with code requirements, conditions of approval, and permit requirements; nor is the designer relieved of responsibility for a complete design in accordance with the laws of the state of Washington.
